  • Let G = (V, E) be a graph. Maximum Bipartite Subgraph Problem is to convert a graph G into a bipartite graph by removing minimum number of edges. This problem belongs to NP-complete; hence, in this research, we are suggesting a new metaheuristic algorithm which combines Tabu search and GRASP.

  • A Harmony Search (HS) and Genetic Algorithms (GA), two powerful metaheuristic search techniques, are used for minimum weight designs of different truss structures by selecting suitable profile sections from a specified list taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). A computer program is coded in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000-OAPI to obtain solution of design problems. The stress constraints according to AISC-ASD (Allowable Stress Design) and displacement constraints are considered for optimum designs. Three different truss structures such as bridge, dome and tower structures taken from literature are designed and the results are compared with the ones available in literature. The results obtained from the solutions for truss structures show that optimum designs by these techniques are very similar to the literature results and HS method usually provides more economical solutions in multi-element truss problems.

  • In this paper, we attempt to prevent certain cases by tracing a history and making genogram about open source software and its modification using similarity of source code. There are many areas which use open source software actively and widely, and open source software contributes their development. However, there are many unconscious cases like ignoring license or intellectual properties infringe which can lead litigation. To prevent such situation, we analyze source code similarity using program dependence graph which resembles subgraph isomorphism problem, a typical NP-complete problem. To solve subgraph isomorphism problem, we utilized harmony search of metaheuristic algorithm and compared its result with a genetic algorithm. For the future works, we represent open source software as program dependence graph and analyze their similarity.

  • Thermal Exchange Optimization (TEO) is a newly developed algorithm which mimics the thermal exchange between a solid object and its surrounding fluid. In this paper, an improved version of the TEO is developed to fix the shortcomings of the standard version. To demonstrate the viability of the new algorithm, the CEC 2016's single objective problems are considered along with the discrete size optimization of benchmark skeletal structures. Problem specific constraints are handled using a fly-back mechanism. The results show the validity of the improved TEO method compared to its standard version and a number of well-known algorithms.

  • Deployment of green transportation in reverse logistics is a key issue for low carbon technologies. To cope with such logistic innovation, this paper proposes a hybrid approach to solve practical vehicle routing problem (VRP) of pickup type that is common when considering the reverse logistics. Noticing that transportation cost depends not only on distance traveled but also on weight loaded, we propose a hierarchical procedure that can design an economically efficient reverse logistics network even when the scale of the problem becomes very large. Since environmental concerns are of growing importance in the reverse logistics field, we need to reveal some prospects that can reduce $CO_2$ emissions from the economically optimized VRP in the same framework. In order to cope with manifold circumstances, the above idea has been deployed by extending the Weber model to the generalized Weber model and to the case with an intermediate destination. Numerical experiments are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and to explore the prospects for future green reverse logistics.

  • In this paper a simple approach is presented for spectral matching of ground motions utilizing the wavelet transform and a recently developed metaheuristic optimization technique. For this purpose, wavelet transform is used to decompose the original ground motions to several levels, where each level covers a special range of frequency, and then each level is multiplied by a variable. Subsequently, the vibrating particles system (VPS) algorithm is employed to calculate the variables such that the error between the response and target spectra is minimized. The application of the proposed method is illustrated through modifying 12 sets of ground motions. The results achieved by this method demonstrate its capability in solving the problem. The outcomes of the VPS algorithm are compared to those of the standard colliding bodies optimization (CBO) to illustrate the importance of the enhancement of the algorithm.

  • Estimation of distribution algorithm (EDA) is a popular stochastic metaheuristic algorithm. EDA has been widely utilized in various optimization problems. However, it has been shown that the diversity of the population gradually decreases during the iterations, which makes EDA easily lead to premature convergence. This article introduces a hybrid estimation of distribution algorithm (EDA) with differential evolution (DE) based on self-adaptive strategy, namely HEDADE-SA. Firstly, an alternative probability model is used in sampling to improve population diversity. Secondly, the proposed algorithm is combined with DE, and a self-adaptive strategy is adopted to improve the convergence speed of the algorithm. Finally, twenty-five benchmark problems are conducted to verify the performance of HEDADE-SA. Experimental results indicate that HEDADE-SA is a feasible and effective algorithm.

  • In recent years, there is an increasing interest to optimize the fuzzy logic controller with different methods. This paper focuses on the optimization of a fuzzy logic controller applied to a seismically excited nonlinear building. In most cases, this problem is formulated based on the linear behavior of the structure, however in this paper, four sets of objective functions are considered with respect to the nonlinear responses of the structure as the peak interstory drift ratio, the peak level acceleration, the ductility factor and the maximum control force. The Improved Charged System Search is used to optimize the membership functions and the rule base of the fuzzy controller. The obtained results of the optimized and the non-optimized fuzzy controllers are compared to the uncontrolled responses of the structure. Also, the performance of the utilized method is compared with various classical and advanced optimization algorithms.
