  • This study focuses on the management of the news production system in broadcasting companies. This paper concentrates on the process of data registration and metadata management in order to examine whether the currently produced news can have value as a 'public record' in the long term, and whether reliable and accurate information is preserved. In addition, the user experience in the current system is analyzed through in-depth interviews with Ingest Managers, Editors, and Archive Managers, who are closely related to metadata creation compared to other members of the its News Department. Finally, a sustainable metadata quality management method is sought to increase the value of news footage as a 'public record'. In this study, these points can be found out: the metadata of the news agency footage is input manually according to the user's will or working style, that is, the user-friendly metadata input system is insufficient. Accordingly, it can be seen that the quality of the metadata of the news video continues to deteriorate. As an alternative to overcome this, it is found that work flow improvement, system improvement, classification system and metadata improvement plan, etc. are definitely necessary in the short and long term.

  • It is not easy to access to the required data from the Web by using search engines because there are too many data selected and they do not provide enough information related to the corresponding data. Metadata is data about data. It includes information about data itself and contents of data as well. Users can acquire enough information about the corresponding data and access to the required data exactly using metadata, and therefore the data usability will be increased. In this paper, several metadata technologies and metadata models that are already in process of standardization or adopted as standards are analyzed, and the SeriCore Metadata Model for documents such as papers, project reports, technical reports, abstracts, and manuals, and graphic images that are in the field of science technologies on the Web is proposed. The SeriCore Metadata Management System that can generate, store, and retrieve metadata effectively is designed and implemented based on the SeriCore Metadata Model.

Metadata Element Design for Korean Medicine Research Data Management and Re-use (한의학 연구 데이터 관리 및 공유를 위한 메타데이터 요소 설계)

  • This research makes the metadata element design for Korean medicine research data management and re-use. Derived metadata elements are verified in research data of Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine. TTAK.K0-10.0976 Standard, DataCite metadata Schema and National Research Data Platform of KISTI were analyzed to derive the metadata elements. Including Identifier, 27 elements were derived as top-level elements with 29 mandatory elements, 13 recommended elements and 31 optional elements. The degree of elements' necessity and new metadata elements were investigated and suggested in the survey by six domain experts in korean medicine field. In this study subject classification for the korean medicine research data are suggested. The final version of metadata schema was tested and verified by comparing with the legacy metadata fields. The research results can be used to describe the Korean medicine research data: items and files.

  • To build the consistency among different metadata systems and to increase the interoperability of that systems even among different domains, naming rules and glossaries for the data elements are necessary. This study provides discussion of naming and identification of the data element concept, data element, conceptual domain, value domain, and its meta model. This study also describes example naming conventions based on ontology derived from the combination with object, properties, and representation of data elements. The naming principles and rules described in this study use I-R analysis, DC metadata set, and SHOE 1.0 as an example of the scientific documents. This study would be a guideline to build the naming rules of metadata based on ontology in various domains.

  • Metadata and folksonomy are two main approaches in representing, organizing, and retrieving resources in the current information environment. Many researches have conducted studies to combine of metadata and folksonomy in order to utilize the strengths of both approaches. This research proposed an approach to utilize both metadata and folksonomy in representing resources by using microcontents. Microcontents in this research is a conceptual structure that reflects dynamic characteristics of folksonomy and the structure of metadata. By connecting folksonomy with metadata through this microcontents structure, both approaches can maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses in representing, organizing, and retrieving resources.

  • This is a study based on the discussion of current electronic recordkeeping Metadata Standards. These standards form the basis for the International Standards. By analyzing ISO 23081, as well as the Metadata Standards used in Australia, England, and in the public records of Korea, the following were observed. This study puts forward the Metadata elements that apply to current electronic records and recognize their relevance and importance. Those elements can be used as the basis for establishing a future Korean Electronic Records Metadata Standard.

  • Recently, a major issue in the research of metadata is the standardization of metadata format. The new extension capability of metadata in the standardization requires some changes - storing and managing dynamic data consistently. In this paper, we define the characteristics of new metadata and propose a concurrency control called Two Version Latch (2VL). 2VL uses a latch and maintains two versions. Maintaining two versions using latch minimizes conflicts between read operation and write operation. The removal of unnecessary lock holding minimizes refresh latency. Therefore, this algorithm presents fast response time and recent data retrieval in read operation execution. As a result of the performance evaluation, the 2VL algorithm is shown to be better than other algorithms in metadata management system.

  • The study designs and implements a metadata management system for archival and manuscripts control. It has two purposes. First purpose is to organize the collection that the Institution of Korean Church History holds by using the proposed metadata format. Second purpose is to suggest the model and framework for managing the collection. The proposed metadata is designed based on ISAD(G), USMARC AMC, EAD and Ebind, By using the proposed metadata, the collection management system, which allows an integrated retrieval, is implemented. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed system as well as to gain the basic data for the improvement of the proposed system, a questionnaire survey through e-mail is conducted. The evaluation results will be utilized for improving and upgrading the proposed system, and the phrased implementation of applying the system to digital libraries is suggested.

  • Recently, in Korea, recognizing the importance of satellite imagery and a national project, the development of satellite providing satellite imagery information of 1m high resolution has been carried out. As the application of satellite. imagery information is expanded to the national land, the environment and geographical information, etc, the necessity of integrated management of satellite imagery information increases. Unfortunately, in case of Korea, currently, the results that institutes for satellite imagery processing produce with satellite imagery have been individually managed. Integrated Management of Satellite Imagery Information project which is being promoted by ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute) in Korea will provide the solutions for the above mentioned problems. In this research work, we designed standard metadata for integrated management of satellite imagery information in consideration of international and national standard.

Efficient Multimedia Data File Management and Retrieval Strategy on Big Data Processing System

  • The storage and retrieval of multimedia data is becoming increasingly important in many application areas including record management, video(CCTV) management and Internet of Things (IoT). In these applications, the files containing multimedia that need to be stored and managed is tremendous and constantly scaling. In this paper, we propose a technique to retrieve a very large number of files, in multimedia format, using the Hadoop Framework. Our strategy is based on the management of metadata that describes the characteristic of files that are stored in Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). The metadata schema is represented in Hbase and looked up using SQL On Hadoop (Hive, Tajo). Both the Hbase, Hive and Tajo are part of the Hadoop Ecosystem. Preliminary experiment on multimedia data files stored in HDFS shows the viability of the proposed strategy.
