The Instructional Influences of Metacognitive Learning Strategies in Elementary School Science Course (초등학교 자연 수업에서 메타인지 학습 전략의 효과)

  • This study investigated the influences of metacognitive learning strategies upon 6th-graders' achievement, science process skill, use of cognitive strategies, use of metacognitive strategies, self-efficacy, intrinsic value, attitude toward science class, and scientific attitude. The metacognitive learning strategies were developed on the basis of previous results and modified in a pilot study. Before the instructions, a pretest of motivation was administered, and used as a blocking variable. The score of previous achievement test was used as covariates for achievement and science process skill. Tests of use of cognitive strategies, use of metacognitive strategies, self-efficacy, intrinsic value, attitude toward science class, and scientific attitude were also administered, and their scores were used as covariates. After the instructions, a researcher-made achievement test, the Middle Grades Integrated Science Process Skills Test, and post-tests of above variables were administrated. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the scores of the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group for all tests except for science process skill. No interactions between the treatment and the level of the previous motivation were found. Educational implications are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to research psychological and social devices to foster self-regulated learning of Korean adolescents. This study investigated metacognitive, motivational, and behavioral factors of self-regulated learning through current research. In terms of metacognitive factors, we reviewed the importance of cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies of adolescents for better self-regulated learning. Especially we gave a great emphasis on the role of comprehension monitoring metacognitive strategy for the learning to read in this review. For motivational factors, recent research of self-regulated learning has tended to focus on self-efficacy and goal orientation. The current research examining behavioral factors of self-regulated learning has tended to focus on time management and academic procrastination. Research findings in the motivational aspect suggest that we need to develop the program to improve adolescents' self-efficacy and recognize new re-conceptualization of the goal theory. Research findings in the behavioral aspect recommend practical tips and strategies to improve time management skills and to overcome academic procrastination. Finally, future directions for research are discussed.

  • In the last 20 years, educators have made significant advances in their thinking about how students learn and what it is that teachers ought to teach. They attempted to teach thinking s kills and designed instructional programs to facilitate learning. The purpose of this study was to review metacognitive approaches in reading comprehension instruction, and to provide some practical implications to school teachers. First, this study reviewed the concept of metacognition. Metacognition can be divided by metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive experiences. Metacognitive knowledge consists of knowledge or beliefs about what factors interact to affect the outcome of cognitive enterprises. Metacognitive experiences are executive control of one's own cognitive process, which include planning, monitorning and evaluating. Second, this study attempted to investigate the processes of reading comprehension in the metacognitively based view. Third, this study reviewed three kinds of reading comprehension instruction. In the metacognitive approaches, instruction is viewed as constructive process in which teachers and students mediate and negotiate meaning from the instructional environment. In order to enhance reading comprehension, teachers should use examples, explicit instruction, modeling, and elaboration to provide sufficient scaffolding to students. The scaffolding gradually diminishes as students learn to use and apply the reading strategies on their own. Also, students should be encouraged to attribute successful reading to the use of appropriate strategies.

  • Training using metacognition in a learning environment is one of the topics that have been continuously studied since the 1990s. Metacognition can be broadly divided into declarative metacognitive knowledge and procedural metacognitive knowledge (metacognitive skills). Accordingly, metacognitive training has also been studied focusing on one of the two metacognitive knowledge. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of metacognitive skills training in the context of mathematical problem solving. Specifically, the learner performed the prediction of problem difficulty, estimation of problem solving time, and prediction of accuracy in the context of a test in which problems of various difficulty levels were mixed within a set, and this was repeated 5 times over a total of 5 weeks. As a result of the analysis, we found that there was a significant difference in all three predictive indicators after training than before training, and we revealed that training can help learners in problem-solving strategies. In addition, we analyzed whether there was a difference between the experiment group and control group in the degree of test anxiety and math achievement. As a result, we found that learners in the experiment group showed less emotional and relationship anxiety at 5 weeks. This effect through metacognitive skill training is expected to help learners improve learning strategies needed for test situations.

The Relationship between Creative Problem Solving in Science and Cognitive Strategies in Elementary School Students (초등학교 아동의 과학 창의적 문제 해결과 인지 전략과의 관계)

  • This study investigated the relationship between elementary school students' creative problem solving skills in terms of science and cognitive strategies. Creative problem solving in science was measured by 4 variables; appropriateness, scientific ability, concreteness, and originality. Cognitive strategies were measured by 6 variables; surface(rehearsal), deep(elaboration and organization), and metacognitive strategies(planning, monitoring, and regulating). The KEDI Creative Problems Solving Test in Science(Cho et al., 1997) and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire(Pintrich & DeGroot, 1990) were administered to 72 subjects. Data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis. Our findings indicated a positive correlation between creative problem solving in science and cognitive strategies. The surface cognitive strategy (rehearsal) positively predicted the total score, the scientific ability's score, the concrete score, and the original score of creative problem solving in science. The deep cognitive strategy(organization) positively predicted the appropriate score and the metacognitive strategy(planning) positively predicted the original score of scientific creative problem solving skills.

Relationships between the Use of ESL Learning Strategies and English Language Proficiency of Asian Students

  • The objective of the present study was to model the relationships between language learning strategy use and language proficiency among the Asian (Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese) students studying English in the United States. The instruments were a language learning strategy Questionnaire and the Institutional Testing Program Test of English as a Foreign Language (ITP TOEFL). Structural equation modeling was utilized to model the relationships between language learning strategies and language proficiency. The present study found only weak relationships between language learning strategies and language proficiency. Only 13% and 15% of variance of the listening and grammar/reading factor were explained by the language learning strategies. The metacognitive strategies appeared not to have direct relationships to the language skill factors, as was found in other studies (Purpura, 1996, 1997). The effects of the social and affective strategies were very small. They in combination could account about 1% and 4% of the variance of the listening and grammar/reading factors.

A Relationship between students' perceived instructional strategies and their use of learning strategies in Engineering Courses (공학수업에서 학생들이 지각하는 교수전략과 학습전략 간의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between instructional strategies applied to engineering courses and students' learning strategies. As a result, students perceived that the application principle was the most applied and then the problem-centered principle was applied to engineering courses. In addition, the students showed that rehearsal strategies are the most used in courses. The most important instructional principle in this study was the problem-centered principle, and the higher the degree of application of problem-centered principle in engineering course, the students were likely to use more deep learning strategies such as elaboration and organization strategy, critical thinking strategy, and metacognitive strategy.

An Investigation into the Effects of Integrative and Instrumental Orientations on Language Learning Strategies

  • This study examines the effects of two motivational orientations on the use of language learning strategies at overall, category, and specific-item levels. 184 students (males and females) from a Korean university responded to the following two questionnaires: the Motivational Orientation Questionnaire (MOQ) developed by the author and Oxford's Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL). The results showed that both integratively- and instrumentally-oriented students were moderate strategy users overall. Integratively-oriented learners were found to use learning strategies more often and a broader spectrum of strategies than instrumentally-oriented learners. A noteworthy finding, however, is that strategy use was not motivation orientation-specific. In other words, the two motivational groups were found to share the similar patterns of strategy use. Independent samples t test results revealed that integratively-oriented students exhibited significantly greater use of overall strategy than instrumentally-oriented students. This phenomenon held true for the use of cognitive, metacognitive, and social categories. At the specific item levels, 13 of the total 50 individual strategies were shown to be employed significantly more often by integratively motivated learners than by their instrumentally motivated peers.

Vocabulary Learning Strategy Use and Vocabulary Proficiency

  • This study investigated vocabulary learning strategies used by EFL middle school learners in Korea and examined the relationship between the middle school learners' vocabulary learning strategy (VLS) use and their vocabulary proficiency level. One hundred and forty-one students in a public middle school participated in the study and the data for this study were collected from a vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire and a vocabulary proficiency test. Based on the result of the vocabulary proficiency test, the participants were divided into three proficiency groups: high-, mid- and low- level proficiency groups. The overall findings of the study revealed that the participants used cognitive strategies most frequently and social strategies least frequently. The most frequently used individual strategies were 'using a bilingual dictionary,' 'studying the sound of a word' and 'practicing words through verbal repetition.' The least frequently used ones were 'interacting with native speakers' and 'studying or practicing the meaning of a word in a group.' The research results also showed that the vocabulary proficiency level has a significant influence on the vocabulary strategy use. The more proficient learners used vocabulary learning strategies more actively. More specifically, the high proficiency level group used metacognitive strategies the most. The middle and low proficiency groups used cognitive strategies the most. It is suggested that language teachers should facilitate the vocabulary learning process by helping learners develop appropriate strategies.

The Effects of Group Coaching Program on Improving Metacognition Learning Ability for Adult Learners (성인학습자 대상 메타인지 학습능력 증진 그룹코칭 프로그램의 효과성 검증)

  • The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a group coaching program to promote metacognitive learning ability in an academic context for adult learners enrolled at a distance university. The topics and objectives of the group coaching program focused on understanding and applying the elements of 'metacognitive knowledge', and each session was conducted online by integrating 'planing-monitoring-regulating', an element of 'metacognitive regulation', into the REGROW model of coaching. To verify the effectiveness of the program, research participants were recruited from adult university students enrolled in A Cyber University and assigned to the experimental and control groups. The experimental group was given the program, while the control group was given the program after the completion of the study. Metacognitive learning ability level and academic self-efficacy were tested before and after the program for both groups, and a satisfaction survey was conducted for the experimental group. Analyses of the data revealed that the experimental group showed higher scores on both the overall and sub-scales of perceived metacognitive learning ability and academic self-efficacy compared to the control group. Participants in the experimental group also reported high satisfaction with the program, increased knowledge of metacognition, awareness and application of metacognitive strategies, and found the group coaching approach beneficial. Based on these findings, implications, and suggestions for future research are presented.
