  • While SVD and Gaussian elimination method were applied to the additive damped least squares(DLS), the convergence and the stability of the optimization process were examined in a triplet-type camera lens-system where the condition number is well conditioned. DLS with SVD method generated a suitable merit function but this merit function may be trapped in a local minimum by the nonlinearity of error function. Therefore, the least camera lens-system was further designed by the global optimization method is grid method, and this method is adopted to get merit function that convergent to global minimum without local minimum trapping.

  • The merit function arises from the development of the solution methods for the complementarity problems defined over the cone of non negative real vectors and has been well extended to the complementarity problems defined over the symmetric cones. In this paper, we focus on the extension of the merit functions including the gap function, the regularized gap function, the implicit Lagrangian and others to the complementarity problems defined over the nonsymmetric matrix cone. These theoretical results of this paper suggest new solution methods based on unconstrained and/or simply constrained methods to solve the matrix cone complementarity problems (MCCP).

  • Optical system has some optical and mechanical constraints. The constraints should be preserved in optimization of optical system. For the purpose, the constraints are combined with the merit function by using Lagrange's undetermined multipliers. We propose an active optimization control by using the fact that the errors of constraints are corrected with higher priority than the other errors of the merit function. In this control, the errors which have large contribution to the merit function are converted into constraints. At that time, if the errors are corrected at once, the optimization will be unstable because of their non-linearity. Hence we introduce a target rate which represents a fraction of error to be corrected, and the errors are corrected progressively. An optimization program was developed on the bases of the proposed active control, and applied to design a photographic lens system. By using the active control, we could get better results compared with conventional damped least squares method. ethod.

• Rugate filters of inhomogeneous refractive index were designed using the Fourier transform and the effect of reflectance, stop bandwidth, optical thickness, and Q function on the rugate filter was investigated. An iterative correction process using a merit function was employed to fit an initial design to the target spectrum. Three Q functions derived by Sossi, Bovard, and Fabricius, respectively, were compared in terms of the number of iteration, merit function, and optimum optical thickness. The result shows that after a number of iterations the Q functions by Bovard and Fabricius produce high rejection rugate filters closer to the target spectrum than the Sossi's Q function and the optimal optical thickness is determined by the stop-band width of the rugate filter. ilter.

  • This paper proposes a new concept, called merit factor Fr, for evaluating the randomness of binary random sequences. The merit factor Fr is obtained from the expected values of the autocorrelation function of the binary random sequence. Using this merit factor Fr, randomness of the binary random sequences generated by the random sampling method is evaluated.

  • We studied the method which would determine the appropriate additive damping factor for the damped least sequres(DLS) optimization. We calculated eigenvalues of the product of the Jacobian matrix of error function by using the singular value decomposition(SVD) method. While suitable damping factor was appiled to the additive DLS by using SVD and Gaussian elimination method, the convergence and stability of the optimization process were examined in a triplet-type camera lens-system where the condition number is well conditioned. We compared the convergence and stability of merit function when median, maximum and minimum of eigenvalues were used as a damping factor in the optimization process. When damping factor is median of eigenvalue, the convergence and stability of merit function are more excellent than in the case of two other eigenvalues. Thus, we adopt the median of eigenvalues as an appropriate damping factor. Next, by using SVD and Gaussian elimination method, we compound the convergence and stability of optimization process for triplet-type camera lens-system design. In these two method; triplet-type camera lens-system in which condition number is well conditioned, has little improvement with the combination of DLS and SVD.

  • We analyzed the aspheric and/or diffractive surface effects to the performance in the long wavelength infrared (8-12 $\mu$m). Also we investigated the dependence of the NA values for the fixed effective focal length 100 mm when the field angle was varied from 5 degrees to 30 degrees stepped by 5 degrees. We chose the merit function as a criteria to compare the performance of the different lenses. Based on the analysis of the aspheric and/or diffractive surface effects, we designed the optical system of F/l.0 for the uncooled thermal imaging system. As for detector the pixel size was 45 $\mu$m square and the number of pixels were a 320${\times}$240 pixels.

  • Recently, population based optimization algorithms are developed to deal with a variety of optimization problems. In this paper, the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is dramatically enhanced and a new algorithm is named Enhanced Salp Swarm Algorithm (ESSA) which is effectively utilized in optimization problems. To generate the ESSA, an opposition-based learning and merit function methods are added to standard SSA to enhance both exploration and exploitation abilities. To have a clear judgment about the performance of the ESSA, firstly, it is employed to solve some mathematical benchmark test functions. Next, it is exploited to deal with engineering problems such as optimally designing the benchmark buildings equipped with multiple tuned mass damper (MTMD) under earthquake excitation. By comparing the obtained results with those obtained from other algorithms, it can be concluded that the proposed new ESSA algorithm not only provides very competitive results, but also it can be successfully applied to the optimal design of the MTMD.
