In this study, we suggested an integrated humidification system for a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) as an efficient method of humidification under the various driving condition of the fuel cell vehicle and system. It is improving air humidification system combined the existing membrane humidifier and water injection. As a result, we verified it through experiments and the vehicle test and could get a result of improvement of humidification performance. The results show that an integrated humidification system is a useful method for FCEV applications.
Modeling and simulation of air humidification by hollow fiber membrane contactors are investigated in the current study. A computational fluid dynamic model was developed by solving the k-epsilon turbulence 2D Navier-Stokes equations as well as mass conservation equations for steady-state conditions in membrane contactors. Finite element method is used for the study of the air humidification under different operating conditions, with a focus on the humidity density, total mass transfer flux and velocity field. There has been good agreement between simulation results and experimental data obtained from literature. It is found that the enhancement of air stream decreases the outlet humidity from 0.392 to 0.340 (module 1) and from 0.467 to 0.337 (module 2). The results also indicated that there has been an increase in air velocity in the narrow space of shell side compared with air velocity wide space of shell side. Also, irregular arrangement has lower dead zones than regular arrangement which leads to higher water flux.
The humidification is essential for performance enhancement of the electrolysis of PEMFC because proton conductivity depends on hydration of the proton exchange membrane. In this study, the humidification experiment did about On/Off control the humidification and dew condensation for PEMFC by using of the membrane humidifiers. As the results, it was possible to approximation control of the humidity by using of the solenoid valve On/Off control on the membrane humidifier. Also the problem on the dew condensation was resolved by approximation humidity control through solenoid valve On/Off control and the removal of the dew condensation in the flow channel was verified through visualization experiment.
The performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is seriously changed by the humidification condition which is intrinsic characteristics of the PEMFC. Typically, the humidification of fuel cell is carried out with internal or external humidifier. A membrane humidifier is applied to the external humidification of residential power generation fuel cell due to its convenience and high performance. In this study, a simple static model is constructed to understand the physical phenomena of the membrane humidifier in terms of geometric parameters and operating parameters. The model utilizes the concept of shell and tube heat exchanger but the model is also able to estimate the mass transport through the membrane. Model is constructed with FORTRAN under Matlab/$Simulink^{(R)}$$\Box$environment to keep consistency with other components model which we already developed. Results shows that the humidity of wet gas and membrane thickness are critical parameters to improve the performance of the humidifier.
Ion permeability characteristics in nano-polymer membrane structures are performed to investigate the chemical composition and characteristics of MEA(Membrane Electrolyte Assembly) which is one of the most important parts to decide the performance in PEMFC(Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell) system. Subsequently, the MEA manufacturing process is presented for the uniformed MEA product. In the meantime, the analysis of SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) is carried out in order to investigate the joint aspect and chemical composition of MEA. As a result of SEM analysis, it is found that the bonded catalyst and carbon composition contain the reasonable amount to get unit cell output. It is also found that the humidification gives the better performance result slightly.
An experimental study is performed to evaluate the performance and the efficiency by humidifying MEA and by making the double-tied catalyst layers in a fuel cell system which is taken into account the physical and thermal concept. An electrical output produced by PEFC(polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell) is measured to assess the performance of the stack and the efficiency is also evaluated according to the different situation in which is placed with and without the humidification of MEA (Membrane Electrolyte Assembly). Subsequently, It is found that the measured values of stack voltage and current are influenced by the stack temperature, humidification, and the double-tied catalyst layers which gives more enhanced values to apply for electric units.
