  • In this study, a PEBAX/PVDF composite membrane was fabricated, and its pervaporation performance was tested in an ethanol/water mixture. In addition, we attempted to improve the pervaporation performance of the composite membrane by forming a ZIF-8 layer on the surface of the PVDF substrate. The thickness of selective layer was optimized by comparing the pervaporation performance depending on the PEBAX thickness. A pervaporation test was performed on the Ethanol/Water mixture. As a result, the composite membrane using PVDF substrate with ZIF-8 layer had a flux of 1.98 kg/m2h and separation factor of 3.88, showing higher values of both permeation flux and selectivity than the composite membrane using bare PVDF substrate.

  • Heterogeneous membranes were prepared by compression molding for the recovery of ammonium ion from waste water. Degree of sulfonation for sulfonated ion exchange resin increased with increasing amount of chlorosulfonic acid. It was 3.32 meq/g at 10 vol%. The tensile strength and elongation of the heterogeneous membrane was decreased with increasing contents of ion exchange resin. The tensile strength for LLDPE matrix membrane was the highest and also the elongation for EVA matrix membranes were the highest. The water content of heterogeneous membrane was increased with increasing contents of ion exchange resin. The maximum value of transport number for PE matrix membrane was 0.973. The electrical resistance of LLDPE matrix membrane was the lowest. It was value of $10.36{\Omega}/cm^2$ at 70 wt% resins.

  • Separation of soluble oil was investigated during filtration of cutting oil emulsion using various commercial ultrafiltration membranes. The surface properties of membranes used were hydrophilic hydrophobic and modified surfaces by various surfactant pretreatments. Conditions varied include stirring speed transmeembrane pressure membrane type and surfactant type for pretreatment. The results give some indication of mechanisms occurring at the membrane surface. Surfactant pretreatments significantly improved water flux and UF flux of hydrophilic regenerated cellulose(up to 2.4x for YM100) and hydrophobic polysulfone (up to 2.2x for PTHK) membranes depending on surfactant type and operating conditions. The UF flux enhancement was attributed to membrane swelling and reduction of interfacial surface tension between oil droplets and membrane surface. unexpectedly the hydrophilic membranes revealed greater flux enhancement than the hydrophobic membranes. The results also showed a greater improvement in UF flux at lower operating pressure.

  • A two-photon fluorescent probe (ACaCL) that can detect near-membrane $Ca^{2+}$ is reported. This probe can be excited by 780 nm fs pulses, shows high photostability and negligible toxicity, and can visualize near-membrane $Ca^{2+}$ in live cells and deep inside live tissues by two-photon microscopy.

  • The potentiometric responses for various anions are investigated with membrane electrode (membrane 1) based on 1,3-diethyl-1,3-dihydroxy-1,3-bis(2-dimethylaminomethyl ferrocenyl) disiloxane. The nitrate ion-selective electrode based on compound 1 gave a good Nernstian response of 58.18 mV per decade for nitrate with the detection limit of −e5.66 of log [NO3−e]. Compound 1 has all those functional groups and the other two compounds have less functional group of ferrocenyl or ferrocenyl and hydroxide, respectively. Even though, potentiometric response to anions was excellent at pH 5, the selectivity pattern for all three membrane electrode based on series of disiloxane is almost like Hofmeister sequence at pH 5. However, the membrane electrode 1-3 exhibited very different response to anions at pH 7. In this pH, NH2 is not protonated and ionophore may act as neutral carrier. Hydrogen bond may enhance the responsibility to hydrogen acceptors and intramolecular electro-active site may increase the permeability of analyte to ionophore in membrane.

  • Adsorption is a widely used technique for the removal of dyes from wastewaters by variety of adsorbents. In this work, the main focus is on the potential assessment of anion exchange membrane for the removal of different dyes using batch system and investigation of experimental data by applying various kinetic and thermodynamic models. The removal of anionic dyes i.e., Eosin-B, Eriochrome Black-T and Congo Red by anion exchange membrane BII from aqueous solution was carried out and effect of various parameters such as contact time, membrane dosage, temperature and ionic strength on the percentage removal of anionic dyes was studied. The experimental data was assessed by kinetic models namely pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich liquid film diffusion, Bangham and the modified Freundlich models equation have been used to analyze the experimental data. These results indicate that the adsorption of these anionic dyes on BII follows pseudo-second-order kinetics with maximum values of regression coefficient (0.992-0.998) for all the systems. The adsorption of dyes was more suitable to be controlled by a liquid film diffusion mechanism. The adsorptive removal of dye Eosin-B and Eriochrome Black-T were decreased with temperature and thermodynamic parameters such as free energy (${\Delta}G^o$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^o$) and entropy (${\Delta}S^o$) for adsorption of dyes on membrane BII were calculated at 298 K, 308 K and 318 K. The values of enthalpy and entropy were negative for EB and EBT representing that the adsorption of these dyes on BII is physiosorptive and exothermic in nature. Whereas the positive values of enthalpy and entropy for CR adsorption on BII, indicating that its adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous in nature. It is evident from this study that anion exchange membrane has shown good potential for the removal of dyes from aqueous solution and it can be used as adsorbent for dues removal on commercial levels.

  • A rapid BOD measurement system using a microbial membrane electrode has been developed. Culture of microorganism and the preparation of microbial membrane, the effect of sample flow rate on the BOD measurement, the effect of solution pH and response characteristics of the microbial membrane electrode were investigated. The rapid BOD measurement system developed by us was connected to a personal computer and the whole BOD measurement procedures were carried out automatically. The best results were obtained when the solution flow rate was 7.8mL/min and the data were obtained 5 minutes after sample injection.

  • A low-${\varepsilon}$ solid-state NMR(Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) probe was developed for the spectroscopic analysis of two-dimensional $^{15}N-^1H$ heteronuclear dipolar coupling in dilute membrane proteins oriented in hydrated and dielectrically lossy lipid environments. The system employed a 800 MHz narrow-bore magnet. A solenoid coil strip shield was used to reduce deleterious RF sample heating by minimizing the conservative electric fields generated by the double-tuned resonator at high magnetic fields. The probe's design, construction, and performance in solid-state NMR experiments at high magnetic fields are described here. Such high-resolution solid-state NMR spectroscopic analysis of static oriented samples in hydrated phospholipid bilayers or bicelles could aid the structural analysis of dilute biological membrane proteins.
