  • Recently photochemical smog has become a serious urban air pollution. And VOC is the major pollutant for it. With the advance of industrialization and urbanization, MSWI fly ash and sewage sludge and melting slag were generated. It is necessary to de-toxificate ashes, because they contain many toxic constituents and probably lead to contaminate the environment. The objective of this research was to prepare multi-functional brick which is able to remove VOCs in ambient air. The bricks were made of MSWI fly ash, sewage sludge and slag. The benzene adsorption experiment by brick was acted to evaluate its adsorptivity. And also photocatalyst material was coated to enhance its adsorptivity and the endurance on the brick. According to the result, the benzene showed 74~96%. The removal efficiency was increased and the breakpoint time was lengthened by coating a brick.

  • Steel industry produces many by-products and wastes such as blast furnace slag, electric arc furnace slag, and converter slag. As in the case of rock, the main component of steel slag are CaO and $SiO_2$ ; further, steel slag is as alkaline as portland cement or concrete. Electric arc furnace oxidizing slag is possible to use as an aggregate for concrete ; however, it has been reclaimed because of it's expansibility caused by free CaO. Recently, a innovative rapid cooling method for melting steel slag has been developed in Korea, which reduces free lime content to minimum level and increases the stability of iron oxide. Therefore, this study describes the results of a series of research to utilize globular shape of electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregates made by rapidly cooled method for the construction industry by cooling rapidly melted slag from the steel industry. First of all, an experiment was carried out to investigate the quality characteristics of rapidly cooled electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregates in order to determine whether they can be applied to the construction industry. Then, by applying them to concrete of various particle sizes, we explored experimentally the desired condition to apply rapidly cooled electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregates to concrete.

  • The objective of the study is to find a way to utilize MSWI slag as filter material and to verify it. To do so, stability as filter material was tested, and used Ju-Munjin filter sand as control group to run actual filtering experiment to analyze filtering efficiency. According to result, MSWI slag is usable within designated waste acceptable standards. Also, it showed similar level of filtering capability to filter sand. Thus, MSWI slag could help to save and recycle resources if used as filtering material instead of filter sand As result of filtering test, SS and COD showed about same level of filtering capability similar to standard filter sand. MSWI slag has shown 26.96% higher with T-N, and 6.55% higher with T-P compared to standard filter sand. Also, remove efficiency comparison result with No. 40#(0.43mm) and mixed diameter showed equal or greater filtering capability.

  • Oxygen equilibrium and the solubility of MgO have been measured in the $CaO-Fe_tO-MgO-SiO_2({\leq}5mass%)-{\Sigma}M_xO_y$ slag in equilibrium with liquid iron in the temperature range of 1550 to $1700^{\circ}C$. The effect of oxides on the MgO solubility, and a method for calculating the solubility of MgO using slag composition and temperature, were discussed. The solubility of MgO is increased with increasing temperature and $Fe_tO$ content, and with decreasing basicity (C/S). The effect of ${\Sigma}M_xO_y$ on the solubility of MgO is a dilution effect due to the increase in slag volume. The activity and activity coefficient of $Fe_tO$ decreased with increasing basicity (B). The effect of temperature on the activity was negligible. The value of ${\rho}=Fe^{3+}/Fe^{2+}$ increased with the increase of the slag basicity (B") and the decrease of the $Fe_tO$ content in the slag.

  • With the advance of industrialization and urbanization, a lot of waste has been discharged and treated by incineration. But fly and bottom ashes are generated in this process. In addition, the treatment method to recycle sewage sludge and melting slag is required to manage these wastes. The objective of this research was to prepare of multi-functional brick which were made from MSWI (Municipal solid wastes incinerator) fly ash, sewage sludge and slag. The bricks were made by mixing raw materials and then drying for 24 hours. Next, they were dried for 24 hours at $160^{\circ}C$ and fired for 2 hours. Calcination temperature was changed to discuss the effect of temperature from $1,080^{\circ}C$ to $1,130^{\circ}C$. Compressive strength of a brick was creased with the increase of temperature. To increase mixing ratio of fly ash and slag reduce the compressive strength the optimal condition was the mixing ratio of fly ash : melting slag : sewage sludge : clay as 10 : 20 : 5 : 65 and $1,150^{\circ}C$ of calcination temperature. Compressive strength was obtained as about 41 MPa at this condition.

  • Petroleum coke (petcoke) is widely used, next to coal, as a gasification feedstock. In gasification processes, the viscosity of the ash and the formation of crystalline phases must be understood to ensure the continuous removal of slag. This study investigates the effect of CaO and V2O3 on petcoke slag viscosity. The viscosity of the molten slag was measured in the temperature range of 1100~1600 ℃ while varying the concentration of each component. The crystalline phases formed in a cooled slag were examined. The most slag samples tested in this study exhibited crystalline slag behavior. The increased CaO concentration resulted in a lower viscosity and a lower Tcv. The viscosity behavior changed from the glassy to crystalline slag and also showed a higher Tcv as the concentration of V2O3 increases. Most slag samples showed different crystalline phases from top to bottom. Anorthites and Ca-V phases were observed in the top and middle section, while the bottom section mainly showed V2O3 and anorthite. The vanadium in the ash forms Ca-V and V-Fe phases and also remains in molten slag. A low melting Ca-V phase can contribute to lowering the viscosity.

  • The slagging which generated from ash deposition on furnace wall and tube in boiler reduces the heat transfer efficiency and damages to safety of boiler. The slag flow behavior in boiler is affected by melting temperature which is related to ash compositions. In this study, the behavior of slag is researched by using ash fusibility test, called TMA (Thermo-Mechanical Analysis). The technique measures the percentage shrinkage as the function of temperature, T25%, T50%, T75%, T90%. These temperatures indicate different stages of melting. Then, the effect of ash chemical compositions measured from XRF (X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer) to ash fusion temperatures is discussed. Among the chemical compositions, refractory and fluxing influence on ash fusibility is described. High levels of refractory component and limited amount of fluxing components ($Fe_2O_3$, $K_2O$, CaO) increase overall melting temperatures. High $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio decrease high melting temperatures (T75%, T90%). Meanwhile, the presence of reasonable levels of fluxing components reduces overall melting temperature. A presence of fluxing component such as $K_2O$ and CaO is found to decrease the T25% values significantly. From this research, it is possible to make a reasonable explanation and prediction of ash fusion characteristic from analysis of TMA results and ash chemical compositions.

  • Fluorspar has been essential flux in steelmaking process. The main effects of fluorspar addition are lowering of the viscosity and melting temperature of slag. In recent years, due to the increasing price and environmental problem of fluorspar, various types of fluorspar substitute have been investigated. In this study, iron oxide by-products such as sinter dust, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) sludge and mill scale were developed as a substitute in terms of waste recycling. Several plant trials were carried out by addition of briquetted substitutes of $4{\sim}6$ kg/ton to compare with the fluorspar of $0.7{\sim}1$ kg/ton. The substitutes showed a similar behavior of slag formation, phosphorus removal and MgO saturation content.
