The Relationship of Cheongsanbyeolgok in Goryeo Dynasty and Gangbo in Joseon Dysnaty (고려 <청산별곡>과 조선 <강보>의 관계)

  • Chongsanbyeolgok is one of Goryeo songs which might be composed in Goryeo dynasty, the composer of which is not known as well as other Goryeo songs. Balsang songs is structured with eleven songs that has been composed newly by King Sejong in Joseon Dynasty for using at Jongmyo (royal ancestral shrine), Johoe (royal audiences), performance, Gangbo is one of 11 songs in Balsang. In Sejongsillok, it is written that Balsang was composed by taking the melody and rhythm of gochwiak (processional music) or hyangak. Thus, it is interesting to know how gochwiak and hyangak, especially Chongsanbyeolgok affected structure and rhythm of Gangbo. As an analytical result of Gangbo and Chongsanbyeolgok, Gangbo consisted of 48 Haeng(line) repeated Chongsanbyeolgok's melody (10 Haeng) by three times. That is, 1-16, 17-32, and 33-48 Haeng of Gangbo excerpted from Cheongsanbyeolgok's melody, and those melodies of Gangbo are same or similar to Chongsanbyeolgok. In this report, Gangbo, one of Balsang's musics in Jos대n Dynasty is proven to be excerpted from the melody of Chongsanbyeolgok in Goryeo Dynasty and repeated.

A study on the convergence of K-pop and world music (케이팝과 월드뮤직의 융합에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to increase the development possibility of K-pop music by analyzing K-pop music and analyzing the use of world music in it. As a research method, we will first look at the world music elements Puerto Rico's reggaeton, Jamaica's toasting, and the melody of Indian music. After that, we analyze two songs, Hyo-yeon's and Hyun-A & Dawn's , with rhythm and melody elements to find out the utilization of World Music. As a result of the study, it was found that it rhythmically showed the type of Dembow rhythm derived from Puerto Rico's reggaeton, and melody followed the form of Jamaican toasting and the melody of Arabic music. This study is meaningful in presenting the possibility of development and various directions of K-pop in the future by analyzing the use of world music used in K-pop music. Through the convergence of various world music and K-pop, I hope that K-pop music will become a culture that is supported by a wider public.

A Comparative on Musical Style of Gyeongjae-Eosan and Comparison to Songam-chang(唱) (경제어산의 음악적 성격과 송암창(唱)과의 비교 고찰 - 안채비소리를 중심으로)

  • This article has reviewed on the characteristics of the Beompae (Buddhist chanting) performed by Gyeongjaeeosan Wonmyeongchang(唱) based on the result of musical style of Gyeongjae Anchaebi-sori as defined under the previous studies. And, through the comparison with the Beompae performed by Songam-chang (唱), a same type of musical piece, it contemplates on musical differences between the two singers. Results of the study are shown as follows. of Gyeongjaeeosan Seolhoeinyu-pyeon and of Socheongsaja-pyeon are sunged as Yuchi-Seong(聲) among Anchaebi-sori. 'main melody type' and 'ending type' are generally similar to the musical characteristics of the Yuchi-Seong(聲), and the differences between the two singers are detected from main melody type D and ending type b. In particular, under of Socheongsaja-pyeon, only the type a is detected among the two types. becouse ending note of ending-type 'a' is ended with 'sol'. The basic frame of the Jjaimsae(musical form) has been clarified in the previous studies that the Jjaimsae of Yuchi-Seong(聲) has been maintained just the way it is. However, even for the same Seong(聲), the combination of the 'main melody type' of passage has not been unified, and depending on the musical piece, it has been discovered that the combination of the 'main melody type' has been diversely organized. of Gyeongjaeeosan Bongsongsajapyeon belongs to Pyeon-gae-seong(聲) broadly from the Anchaebi-sori and it is shown to be So-seong(聲) in details. In particular, in the previous studies, the 'ending melody' of So-seong(聲) and the closing melody of were similar with a slight difference for the 'ending melody'. Such a difference is relation to the characteristics for sequentially descending melody of Wonmyeong-chang(唱). The 'Jjaimsae(The musical structure)' is not much different from the previous studies, and the 'yeok-eum(weaving lyrics)' of Songam-chang(唱) has strong tendency of 3-sobak rhythm while the Wonmyeong-chang (唱) is shown the tendency of 2-sobak rhythm in general for the difference.

  • Thanks to the development of the Internet, people can easily access a vast amount of music. This brings attention to application systems such as a melody-based music search service or music recommendation service. Extracting melodies from music is a crucial process to provide such services. This paper introduces a novel algorithm that can extract melodies from piano music. Since piano can produce polyphonic music, we expect that by studying melody extraction from piano music, we can help extract melodies from general polyphonic music.

  • With the popularity of digital music contents, querying and retrieving music contents efficiently from database has become essential. In this paper, we propose a Fast Melody Finder (FMF) that can retrieve melodies fast and efficiently from music database using frequently queried tunes. This scheme is based on the observation that users have a tendency to memorize and query a small number of melody segments, and indexing such segments enables fast retrieval. To handle those tunes, FMF transcribes all the acoustic and common music notational inputs into a specific string such as UDR and LSR. We have implemented a prototype system and showed on its performance through various experiments.

Music Genre Classification using Time Delay Neural Network (시간 지연 신경망을 이용한 음악 장르 분류)

  • This paper proposes a classifier of music genre using time delay neural network(TDNN) fur an audio data retrieval systems. The classifier considers eight kinds of genres such as Blues, Country, Hard Core, Hard Rock, Jazz, R&B(Soul), Techno and Trash Metal. The comparative unit to classify the genres is a melody between bars. The melody pattern is extracted based un snare drum sound which represents the periodicity of rhythm effectively. The classifier is constructed with the TDNN and uses fourier transformed feature vector of the melody as input pattern. We experimented the classifier on eighty training data from ten musics for each genres and forty test data from five musics for each genres, and obtained correct classification rates of 92.5% and 60%, respectively.

  • In this paper, we proposed a method for extracting predominant melody of polyphonic music based on harmonic structure. Harmonic structure is an important feature parameter of monophonic signal that has spectral peaks at the integer multiples of its fundamental frequency. We extract all fundamental frequency candidates contained in the polyphonic signal by verifying the required condition of harmonic structure. Then, we combine those harmonic peaks corresponding to each extracted fundamental frequency and assign a rank to each after calculating its harmonic average energy. We run pitch tracking based on the rank of extracted fundamental frequency and continuity of fundamental frequency, and determine the predominant melody. For the query by singing/humming (QbSH) task, we proposed Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) based matching engine. Our system reduces false alarm by combining the distances of multiple DTW processes. To improve the performance, we introduced the asymmetric sense, pitch level compensation, and distance intransitiveness to DTW algorithm.

The relationship between general creativity and musical creativity of children (유아의 일반적 창의성과 음악적 창의성과의 관계)

  • The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between general creativity and musical creativity of children, and utilize the results as the basic data to develope of children' music education. The subjects were 50 children of a kindergarten located in the Jeonlabukdo area. The instruments employed were general creativity and musical creativity scales. The data were analyzed with the SPSS program. They were analyzed by Pearson Correlation. The results of this study are as follows: First, creativity was correlated positively with 'making of the melody'. Second, fluency was correlated positively with 'making of the melody', abstraction of title was correlated positively with 'making of the song words', and elaboration was correlated positively with making of the melody and expression by rhythmic movement.

Soon Chul Jung's Melody Development Technique from the Viewpoint of Motive Unit Analysis (모티브(Motive) 단위 분석 관점으로 바라본 정순철 동요의 선율 전개기법)

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze Soon Chul Jung's children's songs, who is one of the four great children's songwriters in Korea along with Geuk Young Yoon, Nan Pa Hong and Tae Jun Park. Soon Chul Jung has contributed by actively participate into children's movement at Japanese colonial period through writing self-composed children's songs. Since children's songs are made for the age group without the sense of sound, children's songs necessitate 'easy to sing-along' melody writing process. Like so, when writing the melody that are easy to be sang along, utilization of development technique using a unit called motive can be the potent way. This method has an advantage of being sang more with ease if actively implemented, and can be done by utilizing the smallest unit of the melody called motive, especially by lightly transform and repeat the unit, consequently structuring the song altogether. To investigate and analyze this motive-based development technique of Soon Chul Jung's songs, 38 out of 40 written songs considered eligible for the research were confirmed and chosen from 'Soon Chul Jung's bibliography and choreography' and each songs were analyzed based on 17 different development techniques which were standardized in the textbook 'Melody in Songwriting' adopted as a textbook of the Berklee college of Music, and also compared these song-writing pipelines with other great songwriters' representatives mentioned above. As a result, it was almost linear that the song's pitch variation in combination with thinning or extension were used frequently and repeatedly, otherwise implicating melody duplication for more than 2 bars and motive repetition were not in his favor, while these methods were often used when writing children's songs. This finding could be viewed as a character of his songwriting.
