Contrast enhancement in the field of ultrasound imaging contributes to improve the accuracy of medical diagnosis by enhancing the visibility of ultrasound images. This paper proposes a contrast enhancement method that improves the contrast of ultrasound images both globally and locally by fusing global and adaptive contrast enhancement methods. Experimental results show that our approach yields more competitive results than the existing global and adaptive contrast enhancement methods in enhancing the visibility of ultrasound images.
Background: Cranial nerve ganglia, which are prone to viral infections and tumors, are located deep in the head, so their detailed anatomy is difficult to understand using conventional cadaver dissection. For locating the small ganglia in medical images, their sectional anatomy should be learned by medical students and doctors. The purpose of this study is to elucidate cranial ganglia anatomy using sectioned images and three-dimensional (3D) models of a cadaver. Methods: One thousand two hundred and forty-six sectioned images of a male cadaver were examined to identify the cranial nerve ganglia. Using the real color sectioned images, real color volume model having a voxel size of 0.4 × 0.4 × 0.4 mm was produced. Results: The sectioned images and 3D models can be downloaded for free from a webpage, anatomy.dongguk.ac.kr/ganglia. On the images and model, all the cranial nerve ganglia and their whole course were identified. In case of the facial nerve, the geniculate, pterygopalatine, and submandibular ganglia were clearly identified. In case of the glossopharyngeal nerve, the superior, inferior, and otic ganglia were found. Thanks to the high resolution and real color of the sectioned images and volume models, detailed observation of the ganglia was possible. Since the volume models can be cut both in orthogonal planes and oblique planes, advanced sectional anatomy of the ganglia can be explained concretely. Conclusions: The sectioned images and 3D models will be helpful resources for understanding cranial nerve ganglia anatomy, for performing related surgical procedures.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects images about medical organizations and the quality of service on customer satisfaction of obs and gyn patients. Method: The subjects of this study were selected conveniently 220 women among obstetrics and gynecology outpatients( who visited H- doctor's office of the first medical organ, P- hospital of the second medical organization, Chospital of the third medical organization). The data were collected from August, 20th 2004 using structured questionaires which included modified form of SERVPERF and customer's satisfaction scale by oliver & swan(1989), and modified form of image scale by kang(1997). Results: Image of hospital(45.3%), visiting frequencies(9.3%), service provider (3.9%) and convenient use(1.2%) of the quality of medical service were significant predictors to explain customer's satisfaction. Conclusion: To increase customer's satisfaction of obs and gyn patients, it is required to developed strategies that improve image of hospital and the quality of service to service provider and convenient use of hospital.
Purpose: To investigate the difference of fractional anisotropy (FA) values between 6- and 25-direction diffusion tensor images (DTI) in normal adult brain. Materials and Methods: DTI was peformed in 28 normal subjects (15 subjects with 6-direction, 13 subjects with 25-direction) in a 1.5 T MR system. DTI was done with SE-EPI sequence with TR/TE/NEX 10000/84/1, 5mm slice thickness and b=1000 s/mm2. FA values were measured from 8 different anatomical locations which included both cerebral peduncles, both posterior limbs of the internal capsules, both corona radiata, genu and splenium of the corpus callosum. Statistical difference of FA was tested between 6-and 25-direction DTI.
A 13-year-old spayed female Beagle dog was referred with high intraocular pressure, hyperemia, and exophthalmos of the left eye and underwent ultrasound, which revealed a mass in the ciliary body of the left eye. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was ordered to evaluate invasion of surrounding structures and metastasis to the brain via the optic nerve. On MR imaging, a single, well-defined, smoothly marginated, triangular-to-oval-shaped mass was found. The mass was hyperintense on T1-weighted images and hypointense on T2-weighted images, similar to a previous case of ocular melanoma. The mass originated from the ciliary body and extended from the anterior chamber to the posterior chamber. Slight enhancement was observed in the mass. There was no evidence of invasion into surrounding structures or the optic nerve, and no sign of metastasis to the brain. The mass was histopathologically diagnosed as benign uveal melanocytoma.
The need for video diagnosis in medicine has been increased and real-time transfer of digital video will be an important component in PACS and telemedicine. But, Network environment has certain limitations that the required throughput can not satisfy quality of service (QoS). MPEG-4 ratified as a moving video standard by the ISO/IEC provides very efficient video coding covering the various ranges of low bit-rate in network environment. We implemented MPEG-4 CODEC (coder/decoder) and applied various compression ratios to moving ultrasound images. These images were displayed in random order on a client monitor passed through network. Radiologists determined subjective opinion scores for evaluating clinically acceptable image quality and then these were statistically processed in the t-Test method. Moreover the MPEG-4 decoded images were quantitatively analyzed by computing peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) to objectively evaluate image quality. The bit-rate to maintain clinically acceptable image quality was up to 0.8Mbps. We successfully implemented the adaptive throughput or bit-rate relative to the image quality of ultrasound sequences used MPEG-4 that can be applied for diagnostic performance in real-time.
Images of medical treatment on PACS environment are digitized and they make saving and transmission of patient's information easy with CD format causing increase of patients transfer rate between hospital and data transmission as well. Figuring out the configuration of confining status of copied images of medical treatment with CD format and present the appropriate way of identification for personal information. 20 general hospital over 500 beds which are utilizing PACS currently. Questionnaire investigation focusing on PACS operation center and it's management people. In accordance with the law of securing personal information of public organizations, it says "Anyone who wants to see his or her information via representative he or she needs to make a letter of attorney and turn in this to the president of it's possessing facility" in the article 16. Based on the investigation of general hospital for CD copy issue status near metropolitan area, 8 out of 20, were issuing CD copy through personal identification process(the person oneself and representative) and 10 general hospital were doing by getting signature of receiptor only without identification of the person oneself and 2 general hospital confirmation process is not at all. By the law of securing personal information of public organization, article 16, confirmation process is supposed to mandate lawfully with a letter of attorney when there is any request of reading and/or copies of one's information. But in reality, there were no consistent rules on reading, the process and coverage of copy issue, rejection coverage of copy issue of CD copy in each general hospital PACS operation center. Therefore there is a big need for consolidated format which is applicable by law when the representative requests to issue of CD copy that is storing medical treatment images. By issue through this consolidated format, securing medical information of individual and systemic operation and management will be valid and effective.
Purpose : The purpose of the study is investigate the images towards emergency medical technician(EMT) perceived by secondary school teachers. Methods : The data was collected from July 30 to 31, 2012. The subjects were 337 secondary school teachers. SPSS Statistics 18.0 was used for internal consistency reliability, descriptive statistical analysis and factor analysis. Results : Those who contacted with EMT consisted of 57.6% which was higher than those who had not(42.4%). Before contact, the gender and teaching subject showed a significant difference of p =.027 and p =.002, respectively. The average on the image towards EMT showed a positive points of $5.68({\pm}0.73)$ out of 7 and the most positive image was 'practical-theoretical' of $6.33({\pm}1.12)$. Factor analysis of EMT image was analyzed based on 3 factors including sincerity($5.89{\pm}0.89$), professionalism($6.02{\pm}0.89$) and familiarity($4.51{\pm}1.42$)(p <.000). The degree of familiarity showed significant differences in gender(p =.005), majoring(teaching subjects)(p =.049) and prior contact(p =.020). Conclusion : In conclusion, previous contact and recognition towards EMT could make good image making in secondary school teachers by getting well-organized promotions and professional services. This contact will make a good future counseling to the students who want to be EMTs.
In image-guided surgery, automatic bone segmentation of Computed Tomography (CT) images is an important but challenging step. Previous attempts include intensity-, edge-, region-, and deformable curve-based approaches [1], but none claims fully satisfactory performance. Although active contour (AC) techniques possess many excellent characteristics, their applications in CT image segmentation have not worthily exploited yet. In this study, we have evaluated the automaticity and performance of the model of Chan-Vese Multiphase AC Without Edges towards knee bone segmentation from CT images. This model is suitable because it is initialization-insensitive and topology-adaptive. Its segmentation results have been qualitatively compared with those from four other widely used AC models: namely Gradient Vector Flow (GVF) AC, Geometric AC, Geodesic AC, and GVF Fast Geometric AC. To quantitatively evaluate its performance, the results from a commercial software and a medical expert have been used. The evaluation results show that the Chan-Vese model provides superior performance with least user interaction, proving its suitability for automatic bone segmentation from CT images.
