  • In this paper, we propose the adaptive Odd/Even Multi-shell Median Filter(adaptive O/E MMF) to improve the defect that Modified Multi-shell Median Filter(MMMF) can not recover missing lines of vertical and cross direction. This filter uses odd/even multi-shells and new proposed threshold strategy The performance of the proposed filter is evaluated over image 'airfield 'by using MATLAB. As the proposed threshold strategy eliminate the number of redundant replacement, it suppresses impulse noise and recovers missing lines.

  • In this paper, we propose a new multilevel nonlinear filter for simultaneous edge detection and noise suppression, which we call a order statistic-median hybrid(OMH) filler. The median-related filters cause an edge shift in the presence of an impulse near the edge. The proposed filter reduces such edge shifting while suppressing impulsive as well as nonimpulsive noise. We show that at the noisy edge point the OMH filter is substantially superior to the median filter, the $\alpha$-TM filter and the STM filter[I] in two respects: (a) the output bias error and (b) the output mean square error. Test results confirm that the OMH filter is robust in preserving sharp edges, inhibiting edge shifting, and suppressing a wide variety of noise. The structure for the OMH filter integrated circuit is also described.

  • In this paper, we studied on the hardware implementation of a 3${\times}$3 window weighted median filter using bit-level sorting algorithm. The weighted median filter is a generalization of the median filter that is able to preserve :,harp changes in signal and is very effective in removing impulse noise. It has been successfully applied in various areas such as digital signal and video/image processing. The weighted median filters are, for the most part, based on word-level sorting methods, which have more hardware and time complexity, However, the proposed bit-serial sorting algorithm uses weighted adder tree to overcome those disadvantages. It also offers a simple pipelined filter architecture that is highly regular with repeated modules and is very suitable for weighted median filtering. The algorithm was implemented by VHDL and graphical environment in MAX+PlusII of ALTERA. The simulation results indicate that the proposed design method is more efficient than the traditional ones.

  • Digital images and videos are subject to various types of noise during storage and transmission. Among these noises, Salt & Pepper noise degrades the compression efficiency of the original data and causing deterioration of performance in edge detection or segmentation used in an image processing method. In order to mitigate this noise, there are many filters such as Median Filter, Weighted Median Filter, Center Weighted Median Filter, Switching Weighted Median Filter and Adaptive Median Filter. However these methods are inferior in performance at high noise density. In this paper we propose a new type of filter for noise mitigation in wireless communication environment where Salt & Pepper noise occurs. The proposed filter detects the location of the damaged pixel by Salt & Pepper noise detection and mitigates the noise by using adjacent pixel values which are not damaged in a certain area. Among the proposed filters, the performance of the filter using the $3{\times}3$ error mask is compared with that of the conventional methods and it is confirmed that when density of noise in the image is 95%, their performances are improved as 13.24 dB compared to MF and 13.09 dB compared to AMF.

  • Salt and pepper noise is caused by various causes such as camera malfunction, storage media memory error, and transmission channel error. Representative filters to remove salt and pepper noise include SMF(standard median filter), CWMF(center weighted median filter), and AMF(adaptive median filter). However previous filters have inadequate noise removal characteristics in high density salt-and-pepper noise environment. Therefore the study suggested a composite filter which, through noise evaluation, preserves original pixels when the central pixel is non-noise, and uses spatial weighted value mask and median when there is noise.

  • The weighted median hybrid filters are proposed. These filters take weighting factors in calculating the output of subfilters of median hybrid filters. The properties of weighted median hybrid filters are analysed and compared to the conventional median filter. The results indicate that these filters preserve details of edge better than and are computationally much more efficient than conventional median filter.

  • In this research we propose the design of the Order Statistic-Adaptive Weighted Average Hybrid(OS-AWAH) filter which can suppress noise from the corrupted image sequence effectively while preserving the image structure. The proposed filter combines the desirable properties of the order static based spatial filter which can preserve the image structure while reducing noise and the adaptive weighted average based temporal filter which can adapt the filtering weights according to the amount of motion without motion estimation. Performance characteristics of the OS-AWAH filter in noisy sequences containing moving step edges are investigated throuth computer simulations and compared with the median based filters such as 3-D WM(weighted median) filter, MMF (multistage median filter), ADCWM(adaptive directional center weighted median) filter. The visual evaluations are also carried out by applyin gthe filters to the real images. The statistical analysis and experimental reslts show that the OS-AWAH filter is effective in preserving image structures while suppressing noise effectively without motion compensation preprocessing.

  • During the transmission process of processing of image, various noises are added causing an error to the image. In order to restore these images, methods such as alpha trimmed average filter, standard median filter and switching median filter were proposed but such previous methods has insufficient noise suppression characteristics. Therefore in this paper, in order to remove the impulse noise added to the image, an adaptive median filter algorithm modified to expand the mask according to the noise density of mask pixels was proposed.

  • The pseudomedian filter was designed to be a computationally effecient alternative to the median filter. However, a thorough analysis ofter pseudomedian filter reveals some important differences between its response and that of the median filter. This paper develops some formal properties of the pseudomedian filter. The root signal analysis demonstrates the close relatonship between the median and pseudomedian filters while pointing out important and useful differences.

  • In this paper, we propose the bilateral filter based on median value that can reduce random noise and impulse noise with minimal loss of contour information. In general, EO / IR camera to generate a random or impulse noise due to a number of reasons. This noise reduces the performance of detecting and tracking by signal processing. To reduce noise, our proposed bilateral filter sorts the values of the target pixel and the peripheral pixels, and extracts a median filter coefficients of the Gaussian type. Then to extract the Gaussian filter coefficient involved with the distance between the center pixel and the surrounding pixels. As using those filter coefficients, our proposed method can remove the various noise effectively while minimizing the loss of the contour information. To validate our proposed method, we present experimental results for several IR images.
