  • Analyzing various works of Nam June Paik who pioneered the world of video art, we can find a number of audiovisual art pieces - in a broad sense - with the characteristics of "intermedia" that are not clearly identified as one genre. Especially, his career as a musician becomes an important clue for us to discuss the unique originality found in Paik's works. Nevertheless, examples of research that specifically explore how Paik's musicality is reflected in his artistry and could be deeply understood is still rare. This article examines Paik's audiovisual art world, and reviews how his musicality is expressed through the characteristics of media and form, as well as contributed to the ultimate technical and aesthetic realizations of his pieces from the perspective of musical synesthesia. The fact that Paik expanded the concept of music through technology, and fused different media to visualize music, is an important achievement in the context of aesthetic, synesthetic music in the field of audiovisual art.

  • Excretory urography is a procedure where opacification of the kidneys, renal pelvic diverticula, ureters, and urinary bladder is a result of renal excretion of an intravenously administered iodinated contrast agent providing both anatomical and functional assessment. And ultrasonography is a non-invasive modality to evaluate the important anatomic information concerning the size, shape, and internal architecture of kidney even in the presence of impaired renal function or abdominal fluid. We describe four dogs with urological signs diagnosed with excretory urography and ultrasonography. Parients showed a variety of clinical signs including vomiting, hematuria, anorexia, abdominal pain, and abdominal distension. The hydronephrosis was diagnosed in case 1, 2, and 3 that had pelvic dilation, dilation of pelvic recesses, ureteral dilation. In case 3, proximal ureteral rupture was diagnosed with evidence of contrast media leakage was seen in proximal ureter. In case 4, the rupture of urinary bladder was diagnosed with leakage of contrast media through its ventral portion.

  • Due to the development of the digital technology, the digital broadcasting is changing to a multi-entertainment platform that can operate data (broadcasting) services (such as games, weather information, and stock trading services) as well as traditional broadcasting contents. Most of the data services, however, failed to get satisfactory results because of the inconvenience in operating the services using a TV remote controller and the failure of gaining the viewer's interests in the competition with the broadcasting contents. The paper introduces a survey on the viewer's modality of using a data service and, based on the survey result, proposes a design guideline that makes a data service minimally interrupt a viewer watching a broadcasting content.

  • The role of magnetic resonance(MR) imaging in the evaluation of thoracic disease has been limited Nontheless, MR has inherent properties of better contrast resolution than CT allowing tissue-specific diagnosis. MR has capability of direct imaging in sagittal, coronal, and oblique planes which provide better anatomic information than axial images of CT such as lesions in the pulmonary apex, aorticopulmonary window, peridiaphragmatic region, and subcarinal region. MR is sensitive to blood flow making it an ideal imaging modality for the evaluation of cardiovascular system of the thorax without the need for intravenous contrast media. Technical developments and better control of motion artifacts have resulted in improved image quality, and clinical applications of MR imaging in thoracic diseases have been expanded. Although MR imaging is considered as a problem-solving tool in patients with equivocal CT findings, MR should be used as the primary imaging modality in the following situations: 1) Evaluation of the cardiovascular abnormalities of the thorax 2) Evaluation of the superior sulcus tumors 3) Evaluation of the chest wall invasion or mediastinal invasion by tumor 4) Evaluation of the posterior mediastinal mass, especially neurogenic tumor 5) Differentiation of fibrosis and residual or recurrent tumor, especially in lymphoma 6) Evaluation of brachial plexopathy With technical developments and fast scan capabilities, clinical indications for MR imaging in thorax will increase in the area of pulmonary parenchymal and pulmonary vascular imaging.

  • The purpose of this study is to design an authoring tool and a corresponding device for an olfactory display that can augment the immersion and reality in broadcasting services. The developed authoring tool allows an olfactory display to be properly synchronized with the existing video service by applying the standardized format using ISO/IEC 23005 (MPEG-V) and the corresponding developed scent display device. To propose the proper data format for the olfactory display, we have analyzed both the multimodal combination and the cross-modality related to the olfactory display. From the results of the analysis, we derived a set of olfactory parameters for the olfactory display that are related to emotion. The analyzed parameters related to emotion in an olfactory display are synchronization, scent intensity, scent persistence, and hedonic tone. These parameters should be controlled so that the olfactory display can be in harmony with the existing media to augment emotion. In addition, we developed a scent display device that can generate many kinds of scents and that satisfies design conditions for olfactory parameters that are for use with broadcasting services.

  • HCI(Human Computer Interaction) enables the interaction between people and computers by using a human-familiar interface called as Modality. Recently, to provide an optimal interface according to various devices and service environment, an advanced HCI method using multiple modalities is intensively studied. However, the multimodal interface has difficulties that modalities have different data formats and are hard to be cooperated efficiently. To solve this problem, a multimodal communicator is introduced, which is based on EMMA(Extensible Multimodal Annotation Markup language) and MMI(Multimodal Interaction Framework) of W3C(World Wide Web Consortium) standards. This standard based framework consisting of modality component, interaction manager, and presentation component makes multiple modalities interoperable and provides a wide expansion capability for other modalities. Experimental results show that the multimodal communicator is facilitated by using multiple modalities of eye tracking and gesture recognition for a map browsing scenario.

  • Examination of the concurrent evolution of communication tools and eating behaviors over recent decades reveals that social media and other forms of digital content have become powerful new driving forces for nutritional choices and food consumption. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect between goal orientation of message (promotion versus prevention) and the type of message (text versus image) on effectiveness of the message. The findings showed that individuals exposed to a promotion-focused message similarly responded to the message regardless of the type of the message. By contrast, those who exposed to a prevention-focused message showed significantly more positive responses to the message posted on the text-based social media than the message on the image-based social media. The findings indicated that, if presented effectively, social media could be harnessed to promote healthier eating habits and behaviors, prevent those which can be harmful, and ultimately improve an individual's daily food consumption and overall quality of life.

  • User, contents exchanged between user and computer system, and media are axes among the vanous factors related to multimedia interface. The points of contact resulted by three mam factors bring many design problems. User factor is most important among and its cognitive constraints become mam design principle for multi-modality features of multimedia. Because media could be understood differently depending on the level of information delivery, it is necessary that various characteristics and representation mode of media are clarified. This thesis develops design evaluation process that tells multimedia interface as a entity integrated with contents, media, and representation elements and assesses its sub elements whether they are correspond with design principal.

  • Interaction requires dynamic relationship between objects. In ubiquitous computing environment, interaction between human and the environment is implied. Tactile interaction has so far been less addressed, while tactile sensation should be an important topic in the field of multimedia study. This paper describes development of a novel PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) dynamic tactile sensor and associated experiments. PVDF dynamic tactile sensors detect touch events applied to the sensor skin by low frequency components of the signal. Rubber skin-covered sensing material was mounted on the bones. Robust performance with low noise was figured out in our robotic experiment. Whereas most conventional sensors are interested in measurement, our dynamic tactile sensor is sensitive to change of state, which could be a key for economic understanding of happenings in the dynamic world. We note that dynamic sensing uses motion as a part of sensing modality We suggest that dynamic sensing be understood in technological terms in the perspective of interactive media and ubiquitous computing.
