Purpose: Accurate monitoring of soil strength is a key technology applicable to various precision agricultural practices. Soil strength has been traditionally measured using a cone penetrometer, which is time-consuming and expensive, making it difficult to obtain the spatial data required for precision agriculture. To improve the current, inefficient method of measuring soil strength, our objective was to develop and evaluate an in-situ system that could measure horizontal soil strength in real-time, while moving across a soil bin. Methods: Multiple cone-shape penetrometers were horizontally assembled at the front of a vertical plow blade at intervals of 5 cm. Each penetrometer was directly connected to a load cell, which measured loads of 0-2.54 kN. In order to process the digital signals from every individual transducer concurrently, a microcontroller was embedded into the measurement system. Wireless data communication was used between a data storage device and this real-time horizontal soil strength (RHSS) measurement system travelling at 0.5 m/s through an indoor experimental soil bin. The horizontal soil strength index (HSSI) measured by the developed system was compared with the cone index (CI) measured by a traditional cone penetrometer. Results: The coefficient of determination between the CI and the HSSI at depths of 5 cm and 10 cm ($r^2=0.67$ and 0.88, respectively) were relatively less than those measured below 20 cm ($r^2{\geq}0.93$). Additionally, the measured HSSIs were typically greater than the CIs for a given numbers of compactor operations. For an all-depth regression, the coefficient of determination was 0.94, with a RMSE of 0.23. Conclusions: A HSSI measurement system was evaluated in comparison with the conventional soil strength measurement system, CI. Further study is needed, in the form of field tests, on this real-time measurement and control system, which would be applied to precision agriculture.

Peak power reduction is becoming increasingly important not only for grid operators but also for residential users. The scheduling of electric loads tries to reduce the power peak by splitting the power-on period of an electric device into multiple smaller ones and by interleaving the on-periods of every device in a holistic way. This paper analyzes the performance of EDF, LSF, TCBM, and lazy scheduling algorithms and proposes the enhancement schemes. For analysis, we have implemented the scheduling policies in a simulation environment for distributed control systems. Through extensive experiments using real power traces, we discuss their performance characteristics in terms of power deviation, switch count, and temperature violation ratio. To prevent excessive switching, we propose to employ the concept of limited preemptibility and evaluate its effect on performance. It is found that the best performance is achieved when the scheduler capacity is dynamically adjusted to the actual power demand. The experiment results show that, by load scheduling, the probability of having a power deviation greater than 150W is reduced from 21.5% down to 3.2%.

Recently, the externally prestressed unbonded steel I-beam bridges have been increasingly built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed steel I-beams which are with external unbonded tendon is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in a point of that the slip of tendons at deviators and the change of tendon eccentricity occurs, when external loads are applied in external unbonded steel I-beams. The concept of prestressing steel structures has not been widely considered, in spite of long and successful history of prestressing concrete members. In this study, The field experiment on prestressed steel I-beams has been performed in the various aspects of prestressed I-beam including the tend on type and profile.

The structure of SpaceEye-1 developed by Satrec Initiative is designed to carry out various earth observation missions in harsh launch and orbit environments. This paper describes methodology of the structure design and analysis performed during the SpaceEye-1 development. The SpaceEye-1 structure is designed not only to endure the static/dynamic loads but also to protect a main payload and all other components under the launch environments. The structural design requirements were derived from the requirements of the launch vehicle, payload, and other subsystems from the initial development phase. Three-dimensional modeling process was used to verify geometric compatibility of the structure with the other subsystems, and finite element analysis was used to confirm whether the designed structure satisfied all the mechanical requirements derived from the launch vehicle and payload.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of two different oblique mechanical loading to occlusal surfaces of cement retained implant on the stress distributions in surrounding bone, using 3-dimensional finite element method. Methods: A 3-dimensional finite element model of a cement retained implant composed of three unit implants, simplified ceramic crown and supporting bone was developed according to the design of ement retained implant for this study. two kinds of surface distributed oblique loads(100 N) are applied to following occlusal surfaces in the single crowns; 1) oblique load on 2 occlusal points(50N for each buccal cusp, 2 buccal cusps exist), 2) oblique load on 4 occlusal points(25N for each buccal and lingual cusp, 2 buccal and 2 lingual cusps exist) Results: The results of the comparison of the stress distributions on surrounding bone are as follows. In the condition of oblique load on 2 occlusal points, VMS was 741.3 Mpa in the M1(Ø$4.0{\times}13mm$) model and 251.2 Mpa in the M2(Ø$5.0{\times}13mm$) model. It means the stress on the supporting bone is decreased. The results of oblique load on 4 occlusal points are similar to this one. Conclusion: Increasing the diameter of the implant fixture is helpful to distribute the stress on the supporting bone. Also, to obtain the structural stability of the supporting bone, it is effective to distribute the load evenly on the occlusal surface of crown in producing single crown implant.
The formation of heat islands causes high energy demand for space cooling and peak cooling loads in conditioned buildings. High-temperature fluctuations on a building roof may cause mechanical stress and increase surface deterioration. Thermal energy storage (TES) systems using microencapsulated phase-change materials (MPCMs) have been recognized as one of the most advanced energy technologies for enhancing the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. In this study, we prepared MPCM/paint composites for mitigating the heat island effect and reducing peak temperature. In addition, we carried out thermal and physical analysis of prepared MPCM composite samples by means of SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, DSC, and TGA. Further, we evaluated the dynamic heat transfer performance of heat-storage tiles painted with 10 g of heat-storage paint. From the obtained results, we deduced that MPCM/hydrophilic paint composites are more applicable to various fields, including the building sector, than MPCM/hydrophobic paint composites. On the basis of SEM and FTIR spectroscopy results, we concluded that materials with hydrophilic properties are more compatible with MPCMs than those with hydrophobic properties. In addition, DSC analysis results revealed that MPCM/hydrophilic paint composites have better compatibility, higher latent heat capacity, and better thermal properties than other composites. TGA results showed that hydrophilic-paint-based composites have higher thermal durability than hydrophobic-paint-based composites. Finally, a lot of MPCM-loaded heat-storage tiles showed lower peak temperatures at all measurement positions.
400RT geothermal system which is the biggest capacity among on-operations at present in Korea is measured and evaluated on 23rd${\sim}$26th Jan. 2008 during those days building is not allowed owners and/or tenants to move in. The geothermal system is consist with vertical-typed 112 geothermal heat exchangers which are installed circle-like 1 row with 4m interval, and has 16 units of 25USRT geothermal-source heat pump(GSHP)s. And each 5 units of circulation pump are running for geothermal heat exchangers and hot water supplies. The followings are the results. The temperatures at G.L. -70m of 2 boreholes are varied quite similarly. The average temperature difference between inlet and outlet of geothermal pipes is $4.1^{\circ}C$, and that of hot water supply is $3.2^{\circ}C$, of Zone 3's each 4 GSHPs when being operated. Despite temperature fluctuations by heating loads, the average temperature difference between main pipes of inlet and outlet of geothermal heat exchangers is measured as $4.1^{\circ}C$. This study propose "Geothermal System COP" which includes not only consumed electric power by compressor but also circulation pumps and auxiliary utilities. By comparing the geothermal system COP with GSHP's performance specification, it is clear that the performances of GHSPs of this site are satisfied with the specification.

Bending moments results from offset overloading of dental implant, which may cause stress concentrations to exceed the physiological capacity of cortical bone and lead to various kinds of mechanical failures. The purpose of this study was to compare the distributing pattern of stress on the finite element models with the different angulated placement of dental implant in mandibular posterior missing areas. The three kinds of finite element model, were designed according to 3 main configurations: Model 1(parallel typed placement of 2 fixtures), Model 2(15. distal angulated placement of one fixture on second molar area), Model 3(15. mesial angulated placement of one fixture on second molar area). The cemented crowns for mandibular first and second molars were made on the two fixtures (4mm 11.5). Three-dimensional finite element models by two fixtures were constructed with the components of the implant and surrounding bone. A 200N vertical static load were applied to the center of central fossa and the point 2mm apart from the center of central fossa on each model. The preprocessing, solving and postprocessing procedures were done by using FEM analysis software NISA/DISPLAY IV Version 10.0((Engineering Mechanics Research Corporation, USA). Von Mises stresses were evaluated and compared in the supporting bone, fixtures, and abutment. The results were as following : (1) Under the point loading at the central fossa, the direction of angulated fixture affected the stress pattern of implants. (2) Under the offset loading, the position of loading affected more on the stress concentration of implants compare to the angulated direction of implants. The results had a tendency to increase the stress on the supporting bone, fixture and screw under the offset loads when the placement angulation of implant fixture is placed toward mesial or distal direction. In designing of the occlusal scheme for angulated placement, placing the occlusal contacts axially during chewing appears to have advantages in a biomechanical viewpoint.

In this study, mechanical role of edge beams in the gabled hyperbolic paraboloid shells was investigated through the comparisons of Finite element(FE) analysis results between the shells structures with and without edge beams. In addition, the effects of roof slope was studied. FE analysis showed that roof loads was directly transferred to the supports at corners by the arch action in the diagonal direction of the shells, thus, less member forces in the edge and ridge beams but higher stresses near supports were estimated than those from the membrane theory. When the edge beams were removed, stress concentration in the shells near the supports and the deflections along the shell edge were increased. Such phenomenon were intensified as the roof slope decrease. Thus, in gable hyperbolic paraboloid shell, the thickness of the shell near supports needs to be increased and careful investigation should be made in the cases when the roof height is low and/or the edge beams are removed.
Anemometer is a meteorological instrument that measures wind direction and wind speed in real time, and is mounted to the cranes that are used at ports, shipbuilding yards, off-shore structure, or construction sites that are influenced by wind, and it is used in conjunction with the safety system. Load cell-type anemometer measures the wind direction through the ratio of load between 4 positions by mounting the thin plate to 4 load cells, and measures wind velocity through the summation of loads. In this study, we compared and analyzed the results in the theoretic approach, analytic approach and experimental approach to derive the correlation between load ratio and wind direction. Wind direction was selected as the design variable, and selected 9 wind direction conditions from $0^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$ with $11.25^{\circ}$ space for analysis, and 10 wind direction conditions with $10^{\circ}$ space for experiment.
