The market of programmable implantable pumps has bound to a monopolistic situation, inducing high device costs, thus making them inaccessible to most patients. Micro-mechanical and medical innovations allow improved performances by reducing the dimensions. This affects the consumption and weight, and, by reducing the number of parts, the cost is also affected. This paper presents the procedure followed to design an innovative implantable drug delivery system. This drug delivery system consists of a low flow pump which shall be implanted in the human body to relieve pain. In comparison to classical known solutions, this pump presents many advantages of high interest in both medical and mechanical terms. The first section of the article describes the specifications which would characterize a perfect delivery system from every points of view. This concerns shape, medication, flow, autonomy, biocompatibility, security and sterilization ability. Afterwards, an overview of existing systems is proposed in a decisional tree. Positive displacement motorized pumps are classified into three main groups: the continuous movement group, the fractioned translation group and the alternative movement group. These systems are described and the different problems which are specific to these mechanisms are presented. Since none of them fully satisfy the specifications, an innovation is justified.. The decisional tree is therefore extended by adding new principles: fractioned refilling and fractioned injection within the fractioned translation movement group, spider guiding system within the alternative translation movement group, rotational bearing guided device and notch hinge guided device in the alternative rotation movement group.
This research is about the pulsatile pump system utilized in the perfusion bioreactor for the in vitro human tissue culture. A pulsatile pump system which can be applied to the culture of the vascular tissues including blood vessel is developed by using the idea of human heart's blood pumping into organs as followings: culture chamber, a pressurizing device which generates laminar pulsatile flow by controlling the x-sectional area of the culture media delivering tubing, a compliance chamber which supplies the pressuring device with a constant pressure, and a peristaltic pump which circulates the culture media in a circuit ranging from the culture chamber to the compliance chamber. The developed pulsatile pump system shows that a physiology of the human heart's blood pumping including pulsatile pressure waveform of systolic-diastolic pressure is well represented. Not only time domain but also frequency domain characteristics of pulsatile pump system which are necessary for the vascular tissue culture such as pulsatile pressure waveform's shape, the frequency, and the magnitude can be easily generated and manipulated by using the proposed system.
This paper deals with a Capstone Design project which is a wearable haptic wrist massage device design carried out within the 'Designeer' education program. Following design thinking process is recommended throughout a year in order to ensure a desirable, feasible and viable product. Dealing with a real problem of the field requires open-minded and flexible attitudes both from students and professors. Integrating design in an engineering project does not mean always making better looking product. User experience design allows wider opportunity to engineers to deal with design. A case study of developing a wearable wrist massage device shown in this paper demonstrate haptic design and how haptic properties can be optimized to offer best user experience of hand massaging. This study identified that starting lateral pressure movements from the center in larger area using air tubes gives better feeling as self-massage using wrist wearing devices.
A Study on the application of ultrasonic with high frequency is carried out as a plan to rise the efficiency of the hydrogen fuel production in an electrolysis of water. KOH is selected as an electrolyte and concentrations are 0 %, 10 %, 20 %, and 30%. The solvent is city water. A measurable device of buoyancy by an electronic balance and a measurable device of voltage with a sensor of pressure are planned newly as a measuring device to measure the quantity of hydrogen production. An ultrasonic transducer with high frequency of 2 MHz is selected to give them the ultrasonic forcing. In results, it is clarified that ultrasonic influences the decrease of overpotential in the electrolytic solution. And basic data according to the pole interval and the temperature are obtained.

The I$_{c}$ degradation behavior of Bi-2223 tapes bent at RT and 77K were investigated using the bending device invented by Goldacker. Test results on fixing the tape at RT and 17K showed no difference. At 17K and RT bending, the critical strain was 0.67 and 0.50$\%$, respectively, for the VAM-l tape. For the AMSC tape, it was 0.94 and 0.88$\%$, respectively. These results show that there is additional residual stress in the superconducting filaments to be bent at 17K which shifts the formation of cracks into smaller bending radii. This was proved by computational analysis based on the mixture rule of composites. For the VAM-l tape, the Ie degradation behavior using the Goldacker type device shifted to higher strain levels at about 0.5$\%$, as compared with the FRP sample holders which have a critical bending strain of about 0.24$\%$. Also, for the externally reinforced AMSC tape, Ie degradation using the Goldacker type device begins at a higher strain level, at 0.88$\%$ as compared with using FRP sample holders, at 0.74$\%$. The difference between both cases can be explained by the tensile' and thermal stresses that the tapes were subjected to during fixing (soldering) when the FRP sample holders were used.
Thermal and flow modeling and fin structure optimization were performed to reduce the weight of an electrical device with a staggered fin. First, a numerical model for thermal and flow characteristics was suggested, and then, the model was verified experimentally. Using the verified model, improvement in cooling performance of the cooling system through the staggered fins was predicted. As a result, 87.5% of total heat generated was dissipated through the cooling fins, and a thermal island was observed in the rotor because of low velocity of the internal air flow through the air gap. In addition, it was confirmed that the staggered fin improves the cooling performance but it also increases the total pressure drop within the cooling system, by maximizing the leading edge effect. Based on this analysis result, the effect of each design parameter on the thermal and flow characteristics was analyzed to select the main optimal design parameters, and multi-objective optimization was performed by considering the cooling performance and the fin weight. In conclusion, the optimized fin structure improved the cooling performance by 7% and reduced the fin weight by 28% without any compromise of the pressure drop.
An ideal circuit breaker should supply electric power to loads without losses in a conduction state and completely isolate the load from the power source by providing insulation strength in a break state. Fault current is relatively easy to break in an Alternating Current (AC) circuit breaker because the AC current becomes zero at every half cycle. However, fault current in DC circuit breaker (DCCB) should be reduced by generating a high arc voltage at the breaker contact point. Large fire may occur if the DCCB does not take sufficient arc voltage and allows the continuous flow of the arc fault current with high temperature. A semiconductor circuit breaker with a power electronic device has many advantages. These advantages include quick breaking time, lack of arc generation, and lower noise than mechanical circuit breakers. However, a large load capacity cannot be applied because of large conduction loss. An extinguishing technology of DCCB with polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) device is proposed and evaluated through experiments in this study to take advantage of low conduction loss of mechanical circuit breaker and arcless breaking characteristic of semiconductor devices.
As semiconductor process was highly integrated, particle contamination became a major issue. Because particle contamination is related with process yields directly, particles with a diameter larger than half pitch of gate should be controlled. PBMS (Particle beam mass spectrometry) is one of powerful nano particle measurement device. It can measure 5~500 nm particles at ~ 100 mtorr condition in real time by in-situ method. However its usage is restricted to research filed only, due to its big device volume and high price. Therefore aperture changeable aerodynamic lenses (ACALs) which can control particle focusing characteristics by changing its aperture diameter was proposed in this study. Unlike conventional aerodynamic lenses which changes particle focusing efficiency when operating condition is changed, ACALs can maintain particle focusing efficiency. Therefore, it can be used for a multi-monitoring system that connects one PBMS and several process chambers, which greatly improves the commercialization possibility of the PBMS. ACALs was designed based on Stokes number and evaluated by numerical method. Numerical analysis results showed aperture diameter changeable aerodynamic lenses can focus 5 to 100 nm standard particles at 0.1 to 10 torr upstream pressure.
