  • PEMFC (polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell) is device that generates electricity from hydrogen. It is one of the subjects related to renewable energy and various research has been conducted on the PEMFC. PEMFC has low operating temperature and high efficiency among fuel cells, and is given attention as means for automobile and domestic use. Analysis of flow field pattern in supplying hydrogen and oxygen is part of the research to increase PEMFC efficiency. In this study, separation plate currently used in PEMFC is transformed to wave shape and mass transfer characteristics in the channel is examined through numerical and experimental analysis. Wave shape separation plate yielded 18% increase of efficiency compared to separation plate used in normal channel. And improvements in mass transfer characteristics were verified.

  • A free-piston reciprocating expander is a device which operates without any mechanical linkage to a stationary part. Since the motion of the floating piston is only controlled by the pressure difference at two ends of the piston, this kind of expander may indispensably require a sophisticated active control system equipped with multiple valves and reservoirs. In this paper, we have suggested a novel design that can further reduce complexity of the previously developed cryogenic free-piston expander configuration. It is a simple replacement of both multiple valves and reservoirs by a combination of an orifice valve and a reservoir. The functional characteristic of the integrated orifice-reservoir configuration is similar to that of a phase controller applied in a pulse tube refrigerator so that we designate the one as a phase controller. Depending on the orifice valve size in the phase controller, the different PV work which affects the expander performance is generated. The numerical model of this unique free-piston reciprocating expander utilizing a phase controller is established to understand and analyze quantitatively the performance variation of the expander under different valve timing and orifice valve size. The room temperature experiments are carried out to examine the performance of this newly developed cryogenic expander.

  • The concept of the seismic slit shear wall was proposed in the early 1990's. A series of experimental and theoretic studies on the wall with reinforced concrete short connecting beams cast in the slit were carried out. In this paper another type of slit shear wall is studied. It is one with vertical slit purposely cast within the wall, and the rubber belt penetrated by a part of web shear reinforcement as seismic energy-dissipation device is filled in the slit. Firstly, an experiment under cyclic loading was carried out on two shear wall models, one slit and the other solid. The failure mechanism and energy-dissipation capacity are compared between the two different models, which testifies the seismic performance of the slit wall improved significantly. Secondly, for engineering practice purpose, a macroscopic analytical model is developed to predict the nonlinear behavior of the slit shear wall under cyclic loading. The mechanical properties of each constituent elements of this model are based on the actual behavior of the materials. Furthermore, the effects of both the axial force and bending moment on the shear behavior are taken into account with the aid of the modified compression-field theory. The numerical results are verified to be in close agreement with the experimental measurements.

  • We fabricated distributed feedback InGaAsP/InP laser diodes for optical fiber communication module and characterized the lasing properties in continuous wave operation. The active layer of 7-period InGaAsP(1.127 eV)/InGaAsP(0.954 eV) multi-quantum well structure was grown by the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The grating for waveguide was also fabricated by the implementation of the Mach-Zehender holographic method of two laser beams interference of He- Cd laser and the fabricated laser diode has the dimension of the laser length of $400{\mu}m$ and the ridge width of $1.2{\mu}m$. The laser diode shows the threshold current of 3.59 mA, the threshold voltage of 1.059 V. For the room-temperature operation with the current of 13.54 mA and the voltage of 1.12 V, the peak wavelength is about 1309.70 nm and optical power is 13.254 mW.

  • Development of high strength steel requires proper understanding of hydrogen behavior since the higher the steel strength the greater the susceptibility of hydrogen assisted cracking. This paper provides a brief but broad overview on hydrogen entry and transport behavior of high-strength ferritic steels. First of all, hydrogen absorption, diffusion and trapping mechanism of the steels are briefly introduced. Secondly, several experimental methods for analyzing the physical/chemical nature of hydrogen uptake and transport in the steels are reviewed. Among the methods, electrochemical permeation technique utilized widely for evaluating the hydrogen diffusion and trapping behavior in metals and alloys is mainly discussed. Moreover, a modified permeation technique accommodating the externally applied load and its application to a variety of steels are intensively explored. Indeed, successful utilization of the modified permeation technique equipped with a constant load testing device leads to significant academic progress on the hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) phenomenon of the steels. In order to show how the external and/or residual stress affects mechanical instability of steel due to hydrogen ingress, the relationship among the microstructure, hydrogen permeation, and HAC susceptibility is briefly introduced.

  • In this paper, we propose a distance measurement system for automatic berthing control using a stereo camera mounted on a rotation control device, and a radial pattern target. Automatically controlling the position and attitude of a ship aims to prevent maritime accidents due to human error. Our goal is to measure the relative distance between a ship and an onshore or offshore target for berthing. Therefore, the distance should be continuously measured while tracking a fixed point on a target. To this end, we developed a stereo camerabased distance measurement system that satisfied these requirements. This paper describes the structure and principle of the measurement system. We validate the distance error for target incline due to the relative position and attitude between a camera and a target in miniature scale. In addition, the findings of an experiment in an outdoor environment demonstrate that the proposed measurement system has accuracy within 1 m at a range of 20-100 m which is the acceptable accuracy for automatic berthing.

  • An inorganic-organic hybrid system, silica-poly(ethylene glycol) songel is reported. This system was prepared via sol-gel method by varying varous processing variables. e.g. ultrasonic radiation time, gelling temperanture, PEG content and its molecular weight. Various experimental techniques wee employed to analyze the morphological, mechanical and optical properties of the system. The results were discussed in the light of existing theories. The sonogel system exhibited the common features of inorganic-organic hybrids. $SiO_2-10$ wt% PEG sonogel exhibited the morphological and optical properties superior to those reported earlier for the classic gels and found suitable for device applications.

  • To ensure the safety of research reactors, the water level must be maintained above the required height. When a pipe ruptures, the siphon phenomenon causes continuous loss of coolant until the hydraulic head is removed. To protect the reactor core from this kind of accident, a siphon breaker has been suggested as a passive safety device. This study mainly focused on two variables: the size of the pipe rupture and the timing of air entrainment. In this study, the size of the pipe rupture was increased to the guillotine break case. There was a region in which a larger pipe rupture did not need a larger siphon breaker, and the water flow rate was related to the size of the pipe rupture and affected the residual water quantity. The timing of air entrainment was predicted to influence residual water level. However, the residual water level was not affected by the timing of air entrainment. The experimental cases, which showed the characteristic of partical sweep-out mode in the separation of siphon breaking phenomenon [2], showed almost same trend of physical properties.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the electrical characteristics with crack pattern in crystalline solar cell. crystalline solar cells with a thin substrate, even small shocks can be easily damaged. Before the module goes through many processes, because the solar cells are at risk of a crack. That occurred early in the PV module micro-crack is not easily detection by eye test or output test. Because the EL (Electroluminescence) device has been detected using. PV module is made by laminated of a variety of materials. By different properties of each material will affect the crack. For this reason, the crack will grow and affect the output. And We analyzed the three crack patterns in crystalline solar cell. A growth of cracks on crystalline solar cell was interpreted by analysing generated cracks on the PV modules. Based on this interpretation, an electrical output value was calculated by mathematical modeling on electrical output characteristic with each crack patterns.
