  • The re-bar work in the construction of nuclear power plants is difficult, due to the large diameter and the congestion of reinforcements. The mechanical anchorage offers a potential solution for this problem. However, the requirements or the standards for the shape of anchor plate of mechanical anchor has not been clearly established up to now. In this paper, the required performance of the mechanical anchorage for large diameter reinforcements in nuclear power plants are proposed, and the anchor plates are designed through nonlinear finite element analysis. The diameters of anchor plate are determined to be $\sqrt{5}$ times of reinforcement diameter for longitudinal reinforcements and $\sqrt{10}$ for shear reinforcements. The thickness of anchor plates is optimized as 0.3-0.35 times of reinforcement diameter for longitudinal reinforcements and 0.5~0.56 times for shear reinforcements.

  • In this study, a finite element(FE) analysis on electro-mechanical impedance response of cable-anchor connection interface under various anchor force is presented. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, an interface washer coupled with piezoelectric(PZT) material is designed for monitoring cable-force loss. The interface washer is a small aluminum plate on which a PZT patch is surface-bonded. Cable-force loss could be monitored by installing the interface washer between the anchor plate and the anchorage of cable-anchor connection and examining the changes of impedance of the interface washer. Secondly, a FE model for cable-anchor connection is established to examine the effect of cable-force on impedance response of interface washer. Also, the effects of geometrical and material properties of the interface washer on impedance responses under various cable-forces are investigated. Finally, validation of the FE analysis is experimentally evaluated by a lab-scale cable-anchor connection.

  • In RC structure, sufficient anchorage of reinforcement is necessary for the member to produce the full strength. Generally, conventional standard hook is used for the reinforcement's anchorage. However, the use of standard hook results in steel congestion, making fabrication and construction difficult. Mechanical anchor offers a potential solution to these problems and may also ease fabrication, construction and concrete placement. In this paper, the required characteristics and the design considerations of mechanical anchor were studied. Also, the mechanical anchor was designed according to the requirements. To investigate the pull-out behavior and properness of mechanical anchorage, pull-out tests were performed. The parameters of tests were embedment length, diameter of reinforcement, concrete compressive strength, and spacing of reinforcements. The strengths of mechanical anchor were consistent with the predictions by CCD method. The slip between mechanical anchor and concrete could be controlled under 0.2mm. Therefore, the mechanical anchor with adequate embedment could be used for reinforcement's anchorage. However, it was observed that the strength of mechanical anchors with short spacing of reinforcements was greatly reduced. To apply the mechanical anchor in practice (e.g. anchorage of the beams reinforcements in beam-column joint), other effects that affect the mechanical anchor mechanism, such as confinement effect of adjacent member from frame action or effects of shear reinforcement, should be considered.

  • Anchor system is widely used in construction works to support retaining structures. The compression anchor is characterized by excellent mechanism of pullout resistance, as well as less probability of progressive failure than a tension anchor. This paper presents the mechanical characteristics of a newly developed compression anchor(JR-2000). Field tests were performed to investigate characteristics of the pullout resistance of compression anchor.

  • This study proposes a ground anchor using electromagnetic induction and utilizes an extended structure using hinges and links and mounting and sensing using electromagnets. The aim is to secure the anchor force, excluding grout, and to secure various sensing capabilities, including ground behavior. We propose a design based on the drilling diameter of 150 mm, and the materials used were STS304 and Aluminum 6061-T6. Computerized analysis was performed to confirm structural safety and functional implementation. The pull-out experiment was conducted by simulating the bedrock environment on a model earthwork as an experiment to check whether anchor force was generated by the insertion and tension of the anchor. The environmental pollution of grout, the difficulty of removing strands, and the inability to check whether the anchor is seated, which were pointed out as disadvantages of the existing ground anchor, were solved. Therefore, this study suggest that it can be effectively utilized as a secure and monitored anchoring solution in eco-friendly construction practices, including the installation of landslide prevention barriers.

  • Structural analysis is performed to design anchor straps for a large-scale-liquefied-natural-gas (LNG) storage tank with corner protection and an inner tank by considering structural integrity. Anchor straps made of 9% nickel steel are attached to the inner tank, corner protection, and concrete raft to prevent the failure of the inner tank during both normal and emergency operating conditions. Two finite element (FE) models were analyzed in this study. One is a stand-alone model of the anchor strap, while the other is an extended model of the substructure of the anchor strap, inner tank, and corner protection. Three-dimensional shell elements are used to effectively assess the bending and axial behavior of structures. The Tresca stress values in each part of the two models are calculated for operation under five different load-condition cases: normal operation, leakage of the LNG, hydro test, and two earthquake conditions.

  • For the bolster type bogie, bolster anchor body connections are proviede to transmit the longitudinal loads for traction or braking between the carbody and the truck. The bolster anchor body connection is generally composed of anchor rod bracket, anchor rod and its fastening devices. The bolster anchor body connection shall be basically capable of withstanding a longitudinal load resulting from excessive braking case or impact. Additionally the north America standard requires that the anchor rod bracket shall be frangible, I.e. the anchor rod bracket shall fail and fall away under load before the carbody structure is damaged since to protect the cabody structure in the event of unexpected accident. This paper describes the shear connection design using the optimized mechanical fasteners in the bolster anchor body connection to satisfy these Northe America requirements.

  • The fluid dynamic properties of a circular arc type sea anchor were calculated by a discrete vortex method. The flow for the surface of the sea anchor was represented by arranging bound vortices at adequate intervals. The simulations were performed by assuming that the separations occur at edges. With time, the drag coefficient was almost constant but the lift coefficient oscillated in a cycle by von Karman's vortex street. As the camber ratios increase, the drag coefficient and Strouhal number were almost constant but the oscillating amplitude of the lift coefficient increased largely.

  • Mechanical anchorage can substitute a standard hook. To enhance the workability and economical benefit of mechanical anchorage, the size of anchor plate should be optimized. In this paper, the pull-out behaviors such as strength, failure mode, and crack patterns of mechanically anchored reinforcement in concrete are investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis. The nonlinear finite element analysis results are consistent with the experimental results. These results show that the optimal anchor plates can be designed using the nonlinear finite element analysis.
