  • In this study, uncertainty analysis based on ITTC(International Towing Tank Conference) Recommended Procedures is carried out in the towing-tank experiment for motion responses and added resistance. The experiment was conducted for KVLCC2 model in head sea condition. The heave, pitch and added resistance were measured in different wave conditions, and the measurement was repeated up to maximum 15 times in each wave condition in order to observe the uncertainty of measured data. The uncertainty analysis was carried out by adopting the ISO-GUM(International Organization for Standardization, Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements) method recommended by ITTC. This paper describes the details about the analysis method, uncertainty and the measured uncertainty for each source. The uncertainty analysis results are summarized as a tabular form. To validate the accuracy of the present measurement, the experimental results are compared with the results of numerical computation and other experiment. From the present uncertainty analysis, the main sources of uncertainty are identified, which can be very useful to improve the accuracy for added resistance experiment.

  • Uncertainties generated from the individual measured variables have an influence on the uncertainty of the experimental result through a data reduction equation. In this study, a performance test of a single stage axial type turbine is conducted, and total-to-total efficiencies are measured at the various off-design points In the low pressure and cold state. Based on an experimental apparatus, a data reduction equation for turbine efficiency is formulated and six measured variables are selected. Codes are written to calculate the efficiency, the uncertainty of the efficiency, and the sensitivity of the efficiency uncertainty by each of the measured quantities. The influence of each measured variable on the experimental result is figured out. Results show that the largest uncertainty magnification factor (UMF) value is obtained by the inlet total pressure among the six measured variables, and its value is always greater than one. The UMF values of the inlet total temperature, the torque, and the RPM are always one. The uncertainty percentage contribution (UPC) of the RPM shows th, lowest influence on the uncertainty of the turbine efficiency, but the UPC of the torque has the largest influence to the result among the measured variables. These results are applied to find the correct direction for meeting an uncertainty requirement of the experimental result in the planning or development Phase of experiment, and also to offer ideas for preparing a measurement system in the planning phase.

  • This study aimed to determine the amount of vitamin C from vegetable & fruit juice by high performance liquid chromatograhy (HPLC). Components for estimation of measurement uncertainty associated with the analysis of vitamin C, such as standard weight, purity, molecular weight, dilution of standard solution, calibration curve, recovery, and precision, were importantly applied. The estimation of uncertainty obtained with systematic and random error based on the GUM (Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement) and EURACHEM document with mathematical calculation and statistical analysis. The components, evaluated ty either Type A or Type B methods, were combined to produce an overall value of uncertainty known as the combined standard uncertainty. An expanded uncertainty was obtained by multiplying the combined standard uncertainty with a coverage factor (k) calculated from the effective degree of freedom. The content of vitamin C from vegetable and fruit juice was 27.53 mg/100g and the expanded uncertainty by multiplying by the coverage factor (k, 2.06) was 0.63 mg/100g at a 95% confidence level. It was concluded that the main sources were, in order of recovery and precision, weight and purity of the reference material, dilution of the standard solution, and calibration curve. Careful experiments on other higher uncertainties is further needed in addition to better personal proficiency in sample analysis in terms of accuracy and precision.

  • This work introduces the uncertainty evaluation formulation on color measurement of light sources and display devices, such as CIE 1931 (x, y) chromaticity, CIE 1960 (u, v) chromaticity, correlated color temperature, and distribution temperature. All the mentioned quantities are reduced from spectral data in the visible range, for which uncertainties are strongly correlated between different wavelengths. Using matrix algebra we have formulated the uncertainty propagation from the SI- traceable spectral irradiance standard to the individual color related measurement quantities taking the correlation between wavelengths into account. As a result, we have demonstrated uncertainty evaluation examples of 3 types of light sources: CIE illuminant A, LED white light, and LCD white light. This method can be applied to any other quantities based on spectral measurement such as solar irradiance, material color measurement, etc.

  • Recently, an interest in the uncertainty analysis on measurement and prediction has been growing. An uncertainty analysis method is applied to the P.O.W test where error sources, estimated errors, their propagation route and their sensitivities to the uncertainty items are clearly illustrated. The uncertainty range for the results obtained from the HMRI Propeller Open Water test is within ${\pm}1%$ which is assumed to be lower than an usual measurement error range of ${\pm}1%$. It has been noticed that the uncertainty analysis can be used quite usefully for detecting dominant error-sources and hence improving the experimental measurement accuracy.

  • A proficiency test is one of programs which Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science(KRISS), as national metrology institute, is putting in operation for the mutual recognition arrangement. The Fluid Flow Group of KRISS evaluated the measurement capability for liquid flowmeter calibrator of the national calibration and test organizations. The uncertainty of national standard system was estimated in accordance with Guide to The Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (ISO), and the turbine flowmeter, which was used for the round-robin test as a reference flowmeter, was characterized. The round-robin tests with the turbine flowmeter package were carried out in 1995 and 1999. The test results of the organizations and those of KRISS agreed within $\pm0.2$%. It is found thus that the organizations have the traceability of the national standard for liquid flow measurement.

  • To solve the nozzle swing angle non-contact measurement problem, we present a nozzle pose estimation algorithm involving weighted measurement uncertainty based on rotation parameters. Firstly, the instantaneous axis of the rocket nozzle is constructed and used to model the pivot point and the nozzle coordinate system. Then, the rotation matrix and translation vector are parameterized by Cayley-Gibbs-Rodriguez parameters, and the novel object space collinearity error equation involving weighted measurement uncertainty of feature points is constructed. The nozzle pose is obtained at this step by the Gröbner basis method. Finally, the swing angle is calculated based on the conversion relationship between the nozzle static coordinate system and the nozzle dynamic coordinate system. Experimental results prove the high accuracy and robustness of the proposed method. In the space of 1.5 m × 1.5 m × 1.5 m, the maximum angle error of nozzle swing is 0.103°.

Then the particle size and uncertainty for differential mobility analyzer(DMA) using the NIST SRM 1963(100 nm PSL). In result, calibration of prototype DMA is measured using 300 nm NIST SRM 1691, then sheath air flow was corrected 126.67 ㎤/s. Corrected sheath air flow is used in uncertainty measurement of prototype DMA. Uncertainty analysis is performed using NIST SRM 1963(100 nm PSL). • Uncertainty analyses accompanied by the measurement of the velocity vectors in 3-D cavity flows are carried out. Twenty-one elemental errors are esimated or calculated according to the ANIS/ASME uncertainty analysis manual. Error components associater with the PIV(Particle Imaging Velocimetry) are reasonably small and the errors caused by the flow characteristics are fairly large, which confirm the reliability of the PIV measurement and also give good information to the planning phase of the experiment by discriminating the most critical parameter. The present study reveals that vector length expressed by pixels is the most influential. Calculated relative uncertainty for the all experimental conditions is ranging about 5-10% in terms of the representative velocity 0.5U. U is here the belt velocity on the cavity apparatus. Approximating equations to show the relative rss uncertainties are given and graphic representations are followed for the easier understanding of the uncertainty, existing in the velocity profiles of the cavity flow.
