  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of small group cooperative communicative activities on the strategies for estimating measurement. To do this, two research questions were set as follow: First, are there any differences between strategies employed by students in the experimental group and the control group before and after the estimating measurement activities? Second, are there any differences between strategies employed by students in different ability levels(upper, middle, lower) of pre-estimating measurement test in the experimental group? The research results were drawn from the investigation as below: First, the strategical change of before and after the estimating measurement tasks in the experimental group was quite noticeable. Unlike the small strategical change in the control group, small group cooperative communicative learning resulted in a decrease of simple memorization and guessing strategies and an increase of refined strategies such as the standard strategy, clustering, unit load and so on. Second, mathematical communicative activities in a small group cooperative learning showed that the students in the upper level of pre-estimating measurement test used more refined strategies and the students in the lower level used simple memorization and guessing strategy more frequently. And through interaction in small group, students could have chances to recognize error of strategies and to modify and learn strategies. In conclusion, small group cooperative activities allowed students to have chances to communicate mathematically and it is a efficient way of helping students learn estimating measurement strategies.

  • Measurement standards, as being widely recognized, is necessary for national economic development and advanced industrialization. Also measurement standards give reliability and fair trade to the producers and consumers. Macro-effect of measurement standards using estimation of cost function has four effects: 1) value-added causing effect, 2) effect of employment, 3) reduction effect transaction cost, 4) reduction effect defect rates. In this study, to investigate the impacts between specific and the other industries, we used I-O Table of Korea Bank. The relation between the value-added produced by original production factors and final use is determined through production level, and the relation can be investigated with production causing coefficient matrix. In this study, it was showed that the measurement standards investments including measurement only man power of industries were increased from 1995 rapidly. The establishment and maintenance of measurement standards contributes to reduce the defect rate of products in production process and improve the confidence of the product quality. The results from this study show that measurement technology contributes to improve quality, decrease defect rate, improve production process, develope new products, reduce prime cost and increase the consumer's confidence on the firms. Since these results indicate that measurement standards are very important in the point of their vast contribution, we hope our findings can contribute to encourage measurement activities in industries.

  • Second harmonic generation using nonlinear ultrasonic waves have been shown to be an early indicator of possible fatigue damage in nuclear power plant components. This technique relies on measuring amplitudes, making it highly susceptible to variations in transducer coupling and instrumentation. This paper proposes an experimental procedure for in-situ surface wave nonlinear ultrasound measurements on specimen with permanently mounted transducers under high cycle fatigue loading without interrupting the experiment. It allows continuous monitoring and minimizes variation due to transducer coupling. Moreover, relations describing the effects of the measurement system nonlinearity including the effects of the material transfer function on the measured nonlinearity parameter are derived. An in-situ high cycle fatigue test was conducted using two 304 stainless steel specimens with two different excitation frequencies. A comprehensive analysis of the nonlinear sources, which result in variations in the measured nonlinearity parameters, was performed and the effects of the system nonlinearities are explained and identified. In both specimens, monotonic trend was observed in nonlinear parameter when the value of fundamental amplitude was not changing.

  • In this paper, we explain the signal characteristics of HEMP and HEMP protection factors that affect the facilities are analyzed. We find the necessary elements of the physical facilities available for building. Shielding effects were measured by changing frequency and the distance of receiving antenna. Each measured value was compared to U.S. standard and measuring method was simplified. shielding effects were measured by three different conditions of shielding room. Find the difference between forward measurement and reverse measurement and factors which affects the measurement in shielding room.

  • Compression coding based on block coding has been applied in image and video compression standard. But there is no block effect measurement due to block based image coding. In this paper, we propose a objective block effects measurement to reconstructed image using subblock DCT coding. Experimental results show that the block effects measures given by the suggested method agree well with the subjective ranking. This new objective measurement is simple and effective in measuring the block effect in the reconstructed image.

  • In the case of aeroacoustic test in windtunnel, measurement accuracy is reduced by not only Doppler effects but also by the microphone self noise due to airflow and high turbulence in the wall boundary layer. Microphone array measurements can be easily utilized for the solutions of these problems. In this paper, geometrical optics approach and diagonal term elimination of cross spectral matrix was introduced to the de-dopplerization and self noise reduction methods for the microphone array measurement. For the validation, beamforming tests for sinusoidal point source were performed in the closed type test section of windtunnel, and their performances of beam width and sidelobe rejection were significantly improved.

  • This letter proposes a robust feature extraction method using a spatially normalized mean for temporal ordinal measurement. Before computing a rank matrix from the mean values of non-overlapped blocks, each block mean is normalized so that it obeys the invariance property against linear additive and subtractive noise effects and is insensitive against multiplied and divided noise effects. Then, the temporal ordinal measures of spatially normalized mean values are computed for the feature matching. The performance of the proposed method showed about 95% accuracy in both precision and recall rates on various distortion environments, which represents the 2.7% higher performance on average compared to the temporal ordinal measurement.

  • Thermoelasticity is a contactless technique for measuring stress distributions in structural elements stressed by dynamic loads. This work describes the characteristics, analyzes the main causes of uncertainty and illustrates a series of operative methods for reducing its effects. More specifically, the effects of the angle of view between the thermographic camera and the surface of the object are studied, along with those due to the heat transmission by conduction between the various parts of the thing being measured as a function of the stress frequencies. The analyses, both theoretical and experimental, are aimed at defining the operational limits and optimal measurement and test conditions in relation to the measurement uncertainty that is considered tolerable in the specific application.

  • A general linear mixed-effects model is often used to analyze repeated measurement experiment data of a continuous response variable. However, a general linear mixed-effects model can give improper analysis results when simultaneously detecting heteroscedasticity and the non-normality of population distribution. To achieve a more robust estimation, we used a heavy-tailed linear mixed-effects model for a more exact and reliable analysis conclusion than a general linear mixed-effects model. We also provide reliability analysis results for further research.
