  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a MOL instrument for school-age children in grades 4 through 6. Method: The research design was a methodological study. A four-phase design involved. 1) Interview data generated from professors, nurses, and elementary school students (n=8). 2) Content validation by expert panel (n=14) 3) Initial items corrected by elementary school students (n=20) 4) Instrument validation by survey (n=574). Finally, 24 items were chosen as a meaning of life scale for late school-age children. Results: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 24 items was .893 indicated a high internal consistency of the instrument, 2) Through factor analysis, 5 factors were extracted. These factors were labeled as 'relational experience', 'positive attitude', 'satisfaction/ hope', 'pursuit of goal', and experience of family love. These factors explained 52.311% of the total variance. Conclusion: The MOL scale for late school-age children can be used in nursing programs to improve the meaning of life. Studies on difference in meaning of life for late school-age children are needed for reverification.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the effects of a logotherapy education program. Methods: A nonequivalent control group, non-synchronized design was conducted with a convenience sample of 29 children with cancer. The experimental group (n=17) participated in the logotherapy education program which consisted of 5 daily sessions for one week. The control group (n=12) received the usual nursing care. The effects were measured using suffering, adolescent meaning in life (AMIL), and spiritual well-being (SWBS) scales. Results: There were significant differences in suffering (W=153.00, p<.05) and meaning in life (W=78.00, p<.05) between the experimental and control groups. However, there was no significant difference in spiritual well-being (W=136.50, p>.05). Conclusions: Logotherapy was effective in reducing suffering and improving the meaning in life. Logotherapy can be utilized for adolescents with terminal cancer to prevent existential distress and improve their quality of life.

Descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression test were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean±standard deviation score of knowledge about palliative care and meaning of life were 8.44±2.20 and 146.48±19.32. Factors affecting senior nursing students' willingness to palliative care were the knowledge about palliative care (β=.18, p=.005), meaning of life (β=.36, p<.001), and motivation for admission into a nursing school based on aptitude and interest (β=.16, p=.020). • The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning of housework for home education. The methodology applied in this study bases on reinterpretation of references concerned with 'housework' and 'education'. The meaning of housework for home education can be analyzed in three aspects, that is, individual, domestic, and social aspect. Houseworkers be capable of developing their physical, emotional, cognitive, and social ability through houseworks. What is more, they are to internalize the culture of home and society. The meaning of housework for home education, however, has gradually been forgotten in people's mind with the appearance of rationalism of modern society. The particular process of modernization in our country has uncovered the negative aspect of housework and continually emphased that point. Thus now people consider housework as only something troublesome. The conclusion of this study is that, for the purpose of our 'noble life as man', we should recover and emphasize the importance of the meaning of housework for home education. • This study has attempted to identify whether or not the effects of perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness of the elderly on a suicidal ideation is mediated by the meaning in life and, during this process, examined if social participation known as a protective factor against elderly suicide has a moderating effect. For this, a total of 403 elderly men and women residing in Honam area have been selected as the subjects of the study, among whom self-report surveys have been conducted as to perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, meaning in life (presence of meaning/search for meaning) and social participation. The mediating analysis with the use of the process macro has identified the path where the perceived burdensomeness encourages a suicidal ideation through the presence of the meaning in life. On the other hand, the thwarted belongingness has turned out to be significant only in a direct path to a suicidal ideation. The analysis results of moderated mediating effects, including social participation have found that social participation does mediate the path to a suicidal ideation caused by the perceived burdensomeness through the presence of the meaning in life, verifying its moderated mediating effects.
