  • Mechanical testing methods to determine the material constants for large deformation nonlinear finite element analysis were demonstrated for natural rubber. Uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, equi-biaxial tension and pure shear tests of rubber specimens are performed to achieve the stress-strain curves. The stress-strain curves are obtained after between 5 and 10 cycles to consider the Mullins effect. Mooney and Ogden strain-energy density functions, which are typical form of the hyperelastic material, are determined and compared with each other. The material constants using only uniaxial tension data are about 20% higher than those obtained by any other test data set. The experimental equations of shear elastic modulus on the hardness and maximum strain are presented using multiple regression method. Large deformation finite element analysis of automotive transmission mount using different material constants is performed and the load-displacement curves are compared with experiments. The selection of material constant in large deformation finite element analysis depend on the strain level of component in service.

  • Polarization mode converters have been produced by utilizing Ti:LiNbO$_{3}$ channel waveguide and strain-optic effect. Shear strain for periodic perturbations of optical channel waveguides and phase matching can be obtained by an evaporated periodic SiO$_{2}$ thin film at 300.deg. C. The electrodes located on the either side of waveguide provide a means to electro-optically tune the wavelength for maximum polarization conversion via the electrooptic effect. The maximum conversion effeciency was observed at 21.deg. C for V=0 and 46.deg. C for V=30V aro the device having 7 .mu.m waveguide wiith and 350 periodic pads. The dependence of the number of pads on conversion efficiency was observed experimentally.fficiency was observed experimentally.

  • This paper was aimed to investigate the shear strengthening effect of the pre-loaded reinforced concrete beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet (CFS). Main tet parameters was the magnitude of pre-loading at the time of the retrofit and the strengthening method of carbon fiber sheet. A series of nine specimens was tested to evaluate the corresponding effect of each parameters such as maximum load capacity, load-deflection relationship, and failure mode. The results of this study showed that the failure mode is bonding failure between the concrete and the CFS before the tensile failure strain of the CFS is reached.

  • Very few studies have been attempted to understand the stress-strain behavior of flexible pavements reinforced with geosynthetics in the middle of asphalt layer. In this study, the flexible asphalt layer was analyzed with finite element method to understand stress-strain behavior. The asphalt layer was reinforced with glass grid and geogrid. The reinforcement was applied in the asphalt layer to prevent its excessive deformation and shear failure. The location of installation and stiffness of the geosynthetics were varied to obtain optimum depth of reinforcement and proper modulus. The results indicate that geosynthetics are more effective for reducing maximum shear stress than those of vertical stress and vertical displacement. Maximum shear stress decreased 15$\sim$20%, and glass grid with high value of modulus was the most effective. Also, in order to prevent failure of asphalt layer, reinforcement should be installed in the 3cm$\sim$5cm depth.

  • Recently, problems related to vibrations of decomposed granite soils have acquired increasing attention in Korea because those soils cover approximately one third of the country. Both resonant column and cyclic triaxial test were performed to investigate deformation characteristics of unsaturated and cement-mixed decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. The important soil parameters in this respect are the shear moduli, dynamic moduli of elasticity and damping ratios. The dynamic parameters are influenced by variables such as strain amplitude, ratio of loading cycles, and degree of saturations, etc. Test results and data have shown that the optimum degree of saturation to the maximum shear modulus due to a capillary menisci effect was about 17~18 % at low strain amplitude and 10~15 % at intermediate strain amplitude. This paper suggests the range of threshold strain and mean shear modulus of decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. It also proposed the empirical relationship between the dynamic parameters for cement-mixed and non-mixed decomposed granite soils.

  • Effects of annealing temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties through thickness of a Cu-3.0Ni-0.7Si alloy processed by differential speed rolling are investigated in detail. The copper alloy with a thickness of 3 mm is rolled to a 50 % reduction at ambient temperature without lubricant and subsequently annealed for 0.5 h at $200-900^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of the copper alloy after annealing is different in the thickness direction depending on the amount of the shear and compressive strain introduced by the rolling; the recrystallization occurs first in the upper roll side and center regions which are largely shear-deformed. The complete recrystallization occurs at an annealing temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. The grain size after the complete recrystallization is finer than that of the conventional rolling. The hardness distribution of the specimens annealed at $500-700^{\circ}C$ is not uniform in the thickness direction due to partial recrystallization. This ununiformity of hardness corresponds well to the amount of shear strain in the thickness direction. The average hardness and ultimate tensile strength has the maximum values of 250 Hv and 450 Mpa, respectively, in the specimen annealed at $400^{\circ}C$. It is considered that the complex mode of strain introduced by rolling directly affects the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the annealed specimens.

  • The present work is concerned with the development of a procedure for adaptive computations of shear localization problems. The maximum jump of equivalent strain rates across element boundaries is proposed as a simple error indicator based on interpolation errors, and successfully implemented in the adaptive mesh refinement scheme. The time step is controlled by using a parameter related to the Lipschitz constant, and state variables in target elements for refinements are transferred by $L_2$-projection. Consistent tangent moduli with a proper updating scheme for state variables are used to improve the numerical stability in the formation of shear bands. It is observed that the present adaptive mesh refinement procedure shows an excellent performance in the simulation of shear localization problems.

  • The effectiveness of shear strengthening with glass fiber sheets on normal or low strength RC beams have been investigated experimentally. A design compressive strength of concrete of 13.5MPa has been planned considering the degradation state of the existing structure to be strengthened in this study. Also, concrete surface reinforcing agent was applied to increase bond capacity between concrete and GFRP sheets in case of low strength RC beams. Comparing the test results of low and normal strength beams strengthened with GFRP sheets indicated that total shear capacity of beams was decreased with concrete strength decreased, but the shear strengthening capacity of GFRP sheets are hardly affected by concrete strength. In addition, shear strengthening effects of RC beams strengthened with GFRP sheets can be estimated by $\rho_w{\cdot}f_w$ based on the maximum effective strain of FRP sheet proposed by ACI 440.2R recommendation.

  • Ground dynamic parameter such as shear elastic modulus and damping ratio is a very important variable in design of ground-structure with repeated load and dynamic load. Shear elastic modulus and damping ratio on small strain below linear limit strain is constant regardless of strain. Shear elastic modulus as the maximum shear elastic modulus and damping ratio as the minimum damping ratio were considered. As a lot of experiment related to the maximum shear elastic modulus, which is in dynamic deformation characteristics, have been conducted, many factors including voiding ratio, over consolidation ratio(OCR), confining pressure, geology time, PI, and the number of load cycle affect to dynamic soil characteristic. However, the research of ground dynamic characteristic improved with grout is absent such as underground continuous wall construction, deep mixing method, umbrella arch method. In order to investigate the dynamic soil characteristics improved with grout, in this study, resonant column tests were performed with changing water content(20%, 25%, 30%) and injection ratio of grout(5%, 10%, 15%), cure time(7th day, 28th day) As a result, shear elastic modulus and damping ratio, which are ground dynamic parameter, are affected by the injection ratio of milk grout, cure time and water content.
