Numerical experimentation for the optimal design for reinforced concrete rectangular combined footings

  • This paper shows an optimal design for reinforced concrete rectangular combined footings based on a criterion of minimum cost. The classical design method for reinforced concrete rectangular combined footings is: First, a dimension is proposed that should comply with the allowable stresses (Minimum stress should be equal or greater than zero, and maximum stress must be equal or less than the allowable capacity withstand by the soil); subsequently, the effective depth is obtained due to the maximum moment and this effective depth is checked against the bending shear and the punching shear until, it complies with these conditions, and then the steel reinforcement is obtained, but this is not guaranteed that obtained cost is a minimum cost. A numerical experimentation shows the model capability to estimate the minimum cost design of the materials used for a rectangular combined footing that supports two columns under an axial load and moments in two directions at each column in accordance to the building code requirements for structural concrete and commentary (ACI 318S-14). Numerical experimentation is developed by modifying the values of the rectangular combined footing to from "d" (Effective depth), "b" (Short dimension), "a" (Greater dimension), "${\rho}_{P1}$" (Ratio of reinforcement steel under column 1), "${\rho}_{P2}$" (Ratio of reinforcement steel under column 2), "${\rho}_{yLB}$" (Ratio of longitudinal reinforcement steel in the bottom), "${\rho}_{yLT}$" (Ratio of longitudinal reinforcement steel at the top). Results show that the optimal design is more economical and more precise with respect to the classical design. Therefore, the optimal design presented in this paper should be used to obtain the minimum cost design for reinforced concrete rectangular combined footings.

서남해안 해상풍력단지 말뚝의 직경에 따른 횡방향 거동 (Effects of Pile Diameter on the Lateral Behavior of Offshore Pile in the Southwestern Area of Korea)

  • 이 논문에서는 풍력터빈의 기초로 쓰이는 해상말뚝의 횡방향 거동에 대한 말뚝 직경의 영향에 관하여 분석하였다. 지반의 물성값들은 국내 최초로 해상풍력단지 건립 예정후보지인 서남해안의 표준관입시험과 실내시험자료를 이용하였다. 유한차분해석프로그램(FLAC3D)과 p-y해석프로그램(LPile)을 사용하여 말뚝 두부의 하중-변위관계, 지반의 p-y 곡선, 말뚝에 발생하는 최대 휨모멘트 등을 말뚝의 직경에 따라 국내 외 허용변위기준을 적용하여 구하였다. 연구 결과 두 프로그램의 결과가 서로 다르게 나타났으며, LPile의 해석결과가 수평허용지지력을 과하게 나타냈다. 직경 2m의 말뚝에서 발생하는 최대 휨모멘트는 직경 1m의 말뚝에 발생하는 최대 휨모멘트보다 약 4배가량 크게 나타났으며, 수평허용지지력에서도 비슷한 경향을 보였다.

  • 심해 군사 작전에서 유도체의 타격 성능 향상은 모함과 유도체가 광 케이블을 통하여 안정적인 통신을 유지함으로써 가능하다. 이 때 광 케이블은 엉킴 및 절단과 같은 풀림 불량을 방지하기 위해 보호 튜브에 의해 보호된다. 또한 보호 튜브는 전단 핀에 의해 유도체와 연결되며, 전단 핀의 파손에 의해 유도체는 보호 튜브와 분리된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 유도체 및 보호 튜브를 모델링하고, 유도체의 운동에 따른 보호 튜브의 풀림 거동을 분석하며 전단 핀에 작용하는 동적 하중을 예측한다. 유도체와 보호 튜브는 질점으로 구성하며, 일정 길이 구속으로 연결한다. 전단 핀에 작용하는 하중은 실험 결과와 비교 검증하며, 이를 바탕으로 보호 튜브의 거동을 예측한다.

페어링 노즈콘에 대한 공력가열 시험 (Aerodynamic Heating Test of Fairing Nose-Cone)

  • Launch vehicles are exposed to aerodynamic heating conditions while flying at high Mach numbers in the atmosphere. In this study aerodynamic heating test for fairing nose-cone was done using ATSF(Aerodynamic Thermal Simulation Facility) and Engineering Model for fairing. ATSF is a facility that can simulate given temperature profile using about 4,000 halogen heaters on fairing model. Aerodynamic heating profile is got from result of thermal analysis using MINIVER, Thermal Desktop and SINDA/FLUINT. After aerodynamic heat test, it is found that initial temperature of fairing inner surface and thickness of BMS has important effects on temperature of fairing inner surface. Also it is confirmed that maximum temperature of fairing nose-cone inner surface during flight is lower than allowable temperature limit. Later, thermal correlation between thermal analysis and experimental results will be done using aerodynamic heating test result

  • Radiation particles can introduce temporary errors in memory systems. To protect against these errors, so-called soft errors, error detection and correcting codes are used. In addition, scrubbing is applied which is a fundamental technique to avoid the accumulation of soft errors. This paper introduces an optimal scrubbing scheme, which is suitable for a system with auto error detection and correction logic. An auto error detection and correction logic can correct soft errors without CPU's writing operation. The proposed scrubbing scheme leads to maximum reliability by considering both allowable scrubbing load and the periodic accesses to memory by the tasks running in the system.

  • This paper describes the development of a three-phase Line-Interactive DVR(Dynamic Voltage Restorer), which is applied to Hybrid detection method and super-capacitor. The operational feasibility was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software, and experimental will be work with 3kVA prototype. The developed system can compensates the input voltage sag and interruption within 2ms, in which the maximum allowable sensitive load, such as computer, communication equipment, automation equipment, and medical equipment. The developed system has a simple structure to be easily implemented with commercially available components and to be highly reliable in operation.

  • This paper describes the current characteristics of outage generator for microgrid in outage mode operation. The outage can be generated with 3-phase voltage disturbance generator. The STS current becomes very huge during the first cycle of the outage, and the magnitude of the current depends on the time impedance, series transformer leakage inductance, interfacing reactor of PCS, and the maximum allowable PCS output current. The current and load voltage waveform are analysed through simulation.

  • The small punch test have been developed to evaluate the material strength of the power plant components. This small punch test specimen is very small than the conventional strength test specimens. Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) have been applying this test to assess accurately the life of thermal power plant and enhancing the reliability. The small punch test for gas turbine blades is under development. It's possible to compare the relative strength among the same materials having different operation histories. In this paper, the strength reductions of gas turbine materials are investigated by the small punch tests. All materials shows the almost same strength and deformation with the allowable deviation. At the same test temperature, the damaged material has the maximum load value. The strength reduction is not shown in this small punch test results.

  • This paper describes the development of a high-performance single-phase line-interactive Dynamic voltage Restorer, which is composed of an H-bridge inverter and super-capacitors. The operational feasibility was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software, and experimental works with 3kVA prototype. The developed system can compensates the input voltage sag and interruption within 2ms, in which the maximum allowable duration of voltage interruption is 1.5 seconds. It can be effectively used to compensate the voltage interruption in the sensitive load, such as computer, communication equipment, automation equipment, and medical equipment. The developed system has a simple structure to be easily implemented with commercially available components and to be highly reliable in operation.

Harmony search algorithm for optimum design of steel frame structures: A comparative study with other optimization methods

  • In this article, a harmony search algorithm is presented for optimum design of steel frame structures. Harmony search is a meta-heuristic search method which has been developed recently. It is based on the analogy between the performance process of natural music and searching for solutions of optimization problems. The design algorithms obtain minimum weight frames by selecting suitable sections from a standard set of steel sections such as American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) wide-flange (W) shapes. Stress constraints of AISC Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and AISC Allowable Stress Design (ASD) specifications, maximum (lateral displacement) and interstorey drift constraints, and also size constraint for columns were imposed on frames. The results of harmony search algorithm were compared to those of the other optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithm, optimality criterion and simulated annealing for two planar and two space frame structures taken from the literature. The comparisons showed that the harmony search algorithm yielded lighter designs for the design examples presented.
