  • This paper explores gifted students' reasoning abilities. Three tests were developed in order to assess and analyze their reasoning abilities building on previous research on covariational reasoning. Giving consideration to the arising problems in the tests, we constructed a LOGO-based JavaMAL microworld environment which engages students in an active learning environment. This environment was designed by applying 'instrumental approach' in microworld. Based upon the post test results, the role of activity in microworld environment as 'instrument mediated activity' is also discussed.

  • Emthusiasm about the introduction of computers into mathematics education is widespred. But, the perspectives about the relationship between mathematics education and computer are diverse. The purpose of this study is to examine theoretical background for using computers in mathematics education. In spite of the pedagogical possibilities of computers. only a small minority of mathematics teachers are using computers in mathematics classroom. It is natural to seek this obstacles within theoretical background of the teachers who manage computers, In this study, We discuss the problems in the two sides. First, due to increased computer activity, relationship of mathematics in school with mathematics in society is changing. It is tension between academic mathematics and practical mathematics. School mathematics have to be changed toward stressing practical mathematics. Second problem is the dialectical relationship between the individual and the collective. While maintaining a respect for the individuality of student contributions. We take into account the social dimension of mathematical meaning-making. We discussed theoretical clarification of work collaborative learning. We propose the case study for the roles of computer in collaborative mathematics learning.

  • In this study, I consider the meaning of activity as the source of mathematical knowledge. Mind-body dualism of Descartes which understands that knowledge precedes activity is somewhat overcomed by Ryle who understands that knowledge and activity are two sides of the same coin. But his discussion cannot offer the explanation about the foundation of rightness or the development of rules which can be expressed propriety of activity or rationality. Contrary to these views, Piaget solve this problem by the reasonability of 'the whole system of activity'. The theory of Dewey can be evaluated as an origin of activism of Piaget. Piaget considers knowledge as the system of activity itself, whereas Dewey considers knowledge as 'the result of activity'. This view of Dewey is related to the view of pragmatism which considers 'practice' is more important than 'theory'. The nature of 'activity' in this study has to be understanded as the interaction or the relation between the subject and the object. If we understand activity like this, we can explain that the whole structure of activity has the 'wholeness' that cannot be simply restored to the sum total of 'parts' and the new structure is a self-regulative transformation system which includes former structure continuously.

  • In this study we develop mathematical tools for measuring the Geumgang Ratio and we call them Geumgang Ratio Calipers. Also we show a teaching method for ratio through experimental mathematics. With Geumgang Ratio Calipers students measure the Geumgang Ratio in their bodies, materials for everyday life and the Sukgulam. Through this activity, students obtained an interest in mathematics and gained a positive attitude for mathematics.

  • Mathematical creativity is a main topic which is studied within mathematics education. Also it is important in learning school mathematics. It can be important for mathematics teachers to view mathematical creativity as an disposition toward mathematical activity that can be fostered broadly in the general classroom environment. In this article, it is discussed that creativity-enriched mathematics instruction which includes creative problem-solving and problem-posing tasks and activities can be guided more creative approaches to school mathematics via routine problems.

  • It has been widely documented that stress conditions in aquatic ecosystems could trigger the release of stress hormone (dopamine) in fishes. Such hormone could attract pathogens (such as Aeromonas hydrophila) to initiate its infection in fishes. The major focus of this study was to investigate the effect of the catecholamine derived stress hormone (dopamine) on the motility and hemolytic activity associated with the virulence of A. hydrophila ATCC AH-1N, the causative agent of Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS). The density of bacterial cells used in this study was adjusted at 106 cells/ml. The results showed that dopamine increased swimming motility of A. hydrophila ATCC AH-1N and was proportional to both dopamine hormone concentration and the incubation period. Dopamine concentration of 100 µM in the medium resulted in the highest increment of swimming ability of A. hydrophila ATCC AH-1N. The dopamine hormone was also found to affect the hemolytic activity of A. hydrophila ATCC AH-1N. The optimum hemolytic activity of the pathogen was found at 50 µM dopamine concentration in the medium, and this hemolytic activity was found to decrease when the concentration of dopamine at greater than 50 µM. It can be concluded from this study that dopamine hormone increased the motility and hemolysis capability, as well as the growth rate of A. hydrophila, and hence increased its virulence.

  • The purpose of the paper is to provide the importance of matacognition as a factor to correct the errors generated by the intuition. For this, first of all, we examine not only the role of metacognition in mathematics education but also the errors generated by the intuition in the mathematical problem solving process. Next, we research the possibility of using metacognition as a factor to correct the errors in the mathematical problem solving process via both the related theories about the metacognition and an example. In particular, we are able to acknowledge the importance of the role of metacognition throughout the example in the process of the problem solving It is not difficult to conclude from the study that emphasis on problem solving will enhance the development of problem solving ability via not only the activity of metacognition but also intuitive thinking. For this, it is essential to provide an environment that the students can experience intuitive thinking and metacognitive activity in mathematics education .

  • The concept of variables is central to mathematics teaching and learning in junior and senior high school. Understanding the concept provides the basis for the transition from arithmetic to algebra and necessary for the meaningful use of all advanced mathematics. Despite the importance of the concept, however, much has been written in the last decade concerning students' difficulties with the concept. This Thesis is based on research to investigate the hypothesis that LOGO programming will contribute to 6th grader' learning of variables. The aim of the research were to; .investigate practice on pupils' understanding of variables before the activity with a computer; .identify functions of LOGO programming in pupils' using and understanding of variable symbols, variable domain and the relationship between two variable dependent expressions during the activity using a computer; .investigate the influence of pupils' mathematical belief on understanding and using variables. The research consisted predominantly of a case study of 6 pupils' discourse and activities concerning variable during their abnormal lessons and interviews with researcher. The data collected for this study included video recordings of the pupils'work with their spoken language.
