  • Quasi-steady approaches have been often adopted to model wind forces on moving cylinders in cross-flow and to study instability conditions of rigid cylinders supported by visco-elastic devices. Recently, much attention has been devoted to the experimental study of inclined and/or yawed circular cylinders detecting dynamical phenomena such as galloping-like instability, but, at the present state-of-the-art, no mathematical model is able to recognize or predict satisfactorily this behaviour. The present paper presents a generalization of the quasi-steady approach for the definition of the flow-induced forces on yawed and inclined circular cylinders. The proposed model is able to replicate experimental behaviour and to predict the galloping instability observed during a series of recent wind-tunnel tests.

  • Model Order Reduction (MOR) denotes the theory by which one tries to catch a model of order lower than that of the real model. This is conveniently pursued in view of the design of an efficient structural control scheme, just passive within this paper. When the nonlinear response of the reference structural system affects the nature of the reduced model, making it dependent on the visited subset of the input-output space, standard MOR techniques do not apply. The mathematical theory offers some specific alternatives, which however involve a degree of sophistication unjustified in the presence of a few localized nonlinearities. This paper suggests applying standard MOR to the linear parts of the structural system, the interface remaining the original unreduced nonlinear components. A case study focused on the effects of a helicopter land crash is used to exemplify the proposal.

  • Severe wind is one of the major natural hazards in Australia. The component contributors to economic loss in Australia with regards to severe wind are tropical cyclones, thunderstorms and subtropical (synoptic) storms. Geoscience Australia's Risk and Impact Analysis Group (RIAG) is developing mathematical models to study a number of natural hazards including wind hazard. This paper discusses wind hazard under current and future climate conditions using RIAG's synoptic wind hazard model. This model can be used in non-cyclonic regions of Australia (Region A in the Australian-New Zealand Wind Loading Standard; AS/NZS 1170.2:2011) where the wind hazard is dominated by synoptic and thunderstorm gust winds.

  • Threr are several methods in protecting the building structures from dynamic loads such as an earthquake and a wind. Among them applying a control force to the building structure is one of the methods to decrease the vibration. The most important and difficult problem in the active control is to obtain the mathematical model of the building structure with a controller. the effective active controller can be designed from the exact model of the system In this paper the three story test building with an active mass driver is identified experimentally. the system matrices corresponding to the experimental building are found and verified with the experimentally-obtained transfer functions and responses efficiently.

  • This work presents a new method to deal with buckling constraints. The mathematical optimization process of truss structures proposed earlier by the author has been proved to be the most rigorous method. The inclusion of buckling constraints, however, gives rise to a new problem The allowable compression stress of a member changes from one design iteration to another. This changing stress limit creates a good deal of noise in selecting active constraints and makes the solution process unstable. This problem can be overcome by introducing relaxation parameters. This work, however, aims at establishing a more rigorous method by containing the allowable compression stress in the left hand side of the associated constraint.

  • We introduce the concept of fuzzy $r$-minimal ${\beta}$-open set on a fuzzy minimal space and basic some properties. We also introduce the concept of fuzzy $r-M$ ${\beta}$-continuous mapping which is a generalization of fuzzy $r-M$ continuous mapping and fuzzy $r-M$ semicontinuous mapping, and investigate characterization for the continuity.

  • This study selected three different specified concrete strength types of mixture which were applied to domestic seawater concrete structure and measured compressive strength and chloride diffusion coefficient and composed the formula of prediction model of chloride diffusion coefficient in order to provide the useful data for concrete mix decision of seawater structures. As a result, the formula of prediction model of chloride diffusion coefficient which set W/C and compressive strength as parameters and performed multiplex regression analysis which was based on the mathematical theory was confirmed more reliable than the formula of prediction which was composed existing water-cement ratio function.

  • This paper experimentally investigates the effectiveness and applicability of the time delay control (TDC) algorithm, which is simple and robust to unknown system dynamics and disturbance, for an active mass damper (AMD) system to mitigate the excessive vibration of a building structure. To this end, the theoretical background including the mathematical formulation of the control system is first described; and then, a thorough experimental study using a shaking table system with a small-scale three-story building structural model is conducted. In the experimental tests, the performance of the proposed control system is examined by comparing its structural responses with those of the uncontrolled system in the free vibration and forced vibration cases. It is clearly verified from the test results that the TDC algorithm embedded AMD system can effectively reduce the structural response of the building structure.

  • Different mathematical models are proposed and their analytical solutions derived for the analysis of linear elastic Reissner's multilayer beams. The models take into account different combinations of contact plane conditions, different material properties of individual layers, different transverse shear deformations of each layer, and different boundary conditions of the layers. The analytical studies are carried out to evaluate the influence of different contact conditions on the static and kinematic quantities. A considerable difference of the results between the models is obtained.
