Development of TPACK and mathematical communication of pre-service teachers in math classes using apps for group creativity (집단창의성 발현을 위한 앱 활용 수학 수업을 위한 예비교사의 TPACK과 의사소통 능력 신장 방안)

  • In this study, pre-service mathematics teachers cultivated technology content teaching knowledge (TPACK) in the regular curriculum of the College of Education. The course was designed to enhance pre-service teachers' mathematical communication skills by using an application, which is a mobile mathematics learning content for the development of group creativity of high school students. The educational program to improve mathematics teaching expertise using the application for group creativity expression consists of pre-education, goal setting, planning, teaching at school, and evaluation. In this process, pre-service teachers evaluated technology tools. They also wrote a task dialogue, lesson play, reflective journal, and lesson plan to guide high school students to develop group creativity in both app activities. As a result of the educational program, pre-service mathematics teachers cultivated TPACK and enhanced their mathematical communication skills with high school students to develop group creativity.

  • This study is on the use of mathematics program for School Mathematics Education. According to the ‘technology principle’ by NCTM and teaching-learning methods by the 7th curriculum, we developed mathematics learning activities with mathematics program. This activity is to construct designs with graphs by using mathematics program(GrafEq.). In this study, we practiced these learning activities with pre-service mathematics teachers. The mathematics educational effects of these learning activities in this study are analyzed as follows; active & spontaneous search for mathematical knowledge, the experience of problem solving, affirmative view-point of mathematics, understanding of practical use of mathematics, acquisition an interest & motivation of learning mathematics etc. When students learn graphs of function, the concept of inequality in secondary school mathematics class., mathematics teachers can make a good use of constructing designs by mathematics program(GrafEq.). This will help to practice of teaching-learning methods by the 7th curriculum.

Elementary Teachers' Epistemological Beliefs and Practice on Convergent Science Teaching: Survey and Self-Study (융합적 과학수업에 대한 초등교사의 인식론적 신념과 실행 -조사연구 및 자기연구-)

  • This study is a complex type consisting of survey study and self-study. The former investigated elementary teachers' epistemological beliefs on convergence knowledge and teaching. As a representative of the result of survey study I, as a teacher as well as a researcher, was the participant of the self-study, which investigated my epistemological belief on convergence knowledge and teaching and my execution of convergent science teaching based on family resemblance of mathematics, science, and physical education. A set of open-ended written questionnaires was administered to 28 elementary teachers. Participating teachers considered convergent teaching as discipline-using or multi-disciplinary teaching. They also have epistemological beliefs in which they conceived convergence knowledge as aggregation of diverse disciplinary knowledge and students could get it through their own problem solving processes. As a teacher and researcher I have similar epistemological belief as the other teachers. During the self-study, I tried to apply convergence knowledge system based on the family resemblance analysis among math, science, and PE to my teaching. Inter-disciplinary approach to convergence teaching was not easy for me to conduct. Mathematical units, ratio and rate were linked to science concept of velocity so that it was effective to converge two disciplines. Moreover PE offered specific context where the concepts of math and science were connected convergently so that PE facilitated inter-disciplinary convergent teaching. The gaps between my epistemological belief and inter-disciplinary convergence knowledge based on family resemblance and the cases of how to bridge the gap by my experience were discussed.

Reconsidering the Category Framework for Describing Mathematics Teachers' Values

  • This paper proposes a modified category framework derived from VAMP and VIMT projects for describing teachers' mathematical and pedagogical values, and examines the dialectical relations between values awareness/willingness and teaching, based on case studies of student teachers of secondary mathematics from a follow-up project of VIMT. The preliminary results show that student teachers would teach certain values depending on the awareness of values priority, willingness to teach, their teaching capabilities and classroom conditions. So, mathematics teacher educators should provide relevant courses to facilitate student teachers to be aware of their implicit values and be willing to enact these values, and to empower student teachers with the knowledge and experiences to teach the values.

  • This study focuses on the analysis of prospective elementary teachers' representation of trapezoid area and teacher educator's reflecting in the context of a mathematics course. In this study, I use my own teaching and classroom of prospective elementary teachers as the site for investigation. 1 examine the ways in which my own pedagogical content knowledge as a teacher educator influence and influenced by my work with students. Data for the study is provided by audiotape of class proceeding. Episode describes the ways in which the mathematics was presented with respect to the development and use of representation, and centers around trapezoid area. The episode deals with my gaining a deeper understanding of different types of representations-symbolic, visual, and language. In conclusion, I present two major finding of this study. First, Each representation influences mutually. Prospective elementary teachers reasoned visual representation from symbolic and language. And converse is true. Second, Teacher educator should be prepared proper mathematical language through teaching and learning with his students.

  • New teaching and learning theory on various aspects about class is needed to implement education which reflects constructivism, ideally. For an ideal learner-centered mathematics class, tangible and intangible elements related to education(view of knowledge, view of leaner, teacher's role, evaluation, the form of class, learning, teaching material, etc.) should be integrated from a constructive perspective and especially, teaching material has to be premised on that learners have intellectual abilities to construct knowledge themselves, and reflect integrity of knowledge, diversity and others, and contain open attributes. In addition to this, teaching material should have characteristics different from those when objective epistemology applies, so there is a need to analyze whether teaching material has those characteristics. For this, this study compared and analyzed <1. Three-Digit Numbers> which belongs to the domain of numbers and operations out of the units of mathematics(3) textbook of the 2009 revised curriculum for the first and second grade that first introduced story-telling, and <3.   • We can say that the history of mathematics is the history on the development of the number system. The number starts from Natural number and is constructed to Integer number and Rational number. The Rational number is not the complete number analytically so that Real number is completed by the idea of the nested interval method. Real number is completed analytically, however, is not by algebra, so the algebraically completed type of the rational number, through the way that similar to the process of completing real number, is Complex number. The purpose of this study is to show the most appropriate way for the development of the human being thinking about the teaching and leaning of Complex number. To do this, We have to consider the proof of the existence of Complex number, the background of the introduction of Complex number and the background knowledge that the teachers to teach Complex number should have. Also, this study analyzes the knowledge to be taught of Complex number based on the anthropological theory of didactics and finally presents the teaching method of Complex number based on this theory.

Polanyi's Epistemology and the Tacit Dimension in Problem Solving (폴라니의 인식론과 문제해결의 암묵적 차원)

  • It can be said that the teaching and learning of mathematical problem solving has been greatly influenced by G. Polya. His heuristics shows down the explicit process of mathematical problem solving in detail. In contrast, Polanyi highlights the implicit dimension of the process. Polanyi's theory can play complementary role with Polya's theory. This study outlined the epistemology of Polanyi and his theory of problem solving. Regarding the knowledge and knowing as a work of the whole mind, Polanyi emphasizes devotion and absorption to the problem at work together with the intelligence and feeling. And the role of teachers are essential in a sense that students can learn implicit knowledge from them. However, our high school students do not seem to take enough time and effort to the problem solving. Nor do they request school teachers' help. According to Polanyi, this attitude can cause a serious problem in teaching and learning of mathematical problem solving.

A Meta Review of the Researches on PCK in Mathematics (수학의 교수학적 내용 지식(PCK)에 대한 연구의 메타적 검토)

  • Considering the fact that PCK(pedogogical content knowledge) tends to guarantee the identity of mathematics education as a discipline and the teacher professionalism, PCK is one of the core concepts in the research on subject matter education. The purpose of this study is to review domestic and international researches on the definition and the components of PCK in mathematics. Based on the review, this study identified 3 knowledges which consist PCK; knowedge of mathematic content, knowledge of learner's understanding, and knowledge of teaching. Then this study provided some examples of PKC in the topic, the limit of sequences, and introduced the LMT and TEDS-M items, which were designed to measure the teacher's PCK. Lastly, this study attempted to evaluate the items on mathematics education included in the Teacher Employment Test administered for pre-service/. teachers in Korea based on PCK.

  • In this information-oriented society of the 21st century, our education should combine the knowledge from the past and present in order to have students be ready to solve “the problems in the future”. But nowadays, our social situation makes much importance of the “cramming” education just for the College Scholastic Ability Test rather than the “whole man” education for making creative citizens of the future society. So does mathematics education. In a high school, mathematics education should be toward these aims: recognizing the value of math, applying mathematical principles to actual lives, promoting students' thinking ability. Also, it should focus on teaching higher level of mathematical knowledge which includes more logical and abstract idea so that students can prepare for the global society of the future. This study is about development and utilization of the teaching materials for mathematics class which usually deviates from the routine right after the Scholastic Ability Test finished. These materials are the result of a complete survey of the 3rd graders and their teachers and designed to use for 30 periods of class from after-the-test-finished to graduation. The materials consist of a history of mathematics, puzzles, magic number squares, and so on. Remarkably different from the current textbooks which deal with sets, equations, functions, these materials proved to be useful for their variety and attraction. Consequently, the materials are considered to keep the 3rd graders from forgetting mathematics even after the Scholastic Ability Test, and to help them recognize that mathematics is a kind of basic and cultural study and a tool of daily lives.
