  • The study on Shilla monumental inscription has beer accomplished by many historians. However, the research on enhancement of monumental inscription image using digital image processing technique is not sufficient. The preprocessing using computer is needed fur accurate interpretation of history. In this paper, digital image enhancement algorithm based on mathematical morphology for noise reduction and character clearness is proposed. In the experiment, the subjective image quality is improved using the proposed algorithm.

  • This study investigated the mathematical notation used today in terms of skip ping the parenthesis. At first we have studied the elementary and secondary curriculum content related to omitted rules. As a result, it is difficult to find explicit evidence to answer that question 'What is the calculation of the $48{\div}2(9+3)$?'. In order to inquire the notation fundamentally, we checked the characteristics on prefix, infix and postfix, and looked into the advantages and disadvantages on infix. At the same time we illuminated the development of mathematical notation from the point of view of skipping the parenthesis. From this investigation, we could check that this interpretation was smooth in the point of view that skipping the parentheses are the image of the function. Through this we proposed some teaching methods including 'teaching mathematical notation based on historic genetic principle', 'reproduction of efforts to overcome the disadvantages of infix and understand the context to choose infix', 'finding the omitted parentheses to identify the fundamental formula' and 'specifying the viewpoint that skipping the multiplication notation can be considered as an image of the function'.

  • Ultrasound imaging is a widely used tool for visualizing human body's internal organs and quantifying clinical parameters. Due to its advantages such as safety, non-invasiveness, portability, low cost and real-time 2D/3D imaging, diagnostic ultrasound industry has steadily grown. Since the technology advancements such as digital beam-forming, Doppler ultrasound, real-time 3D imaging and automated diagnosis techniques, there are still a lot of demands for image quality improvement, faster and accurate imaging, 3D color Doppler imaging and advanced functional imaging modes. In order to satisfy those demands, mathematics should be used properly and effectively in ultrasound imaging. Mathematics has been used commonly as mathematical modelling, numerical solutions and visualization, combined with science and engineering. In this article, we describe a brief history of ultrasound imaging, its basic principle, its applications in obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology and radiology, domestic-industrial products, contributions of mathematics and challenging issues in ultrasound imaging.

  • This study proposes a method to develop an authoring system(GeoMaTree) for diverse trees that constitute a virtual landscape. The GeoMaTree system enables the simple, intuitive production of an efficient structure, and supports real-time processing. The core of the proposed system is a procedural modeling based on a mathematical model and an application that supports digital content creation on diverse platforms. The procedural modeling allows users to control the complex pattern of branch propagation through an intuitive process. The application is a multi-resolution 3D model that supports appropriate optimization for a tree structure. The application and a compatible function, with commercial tools for supporting the creation of realistic synthetic images and virtual landscapes, are implemented, and the proposed system is applied to a variety of 3D image content.

  • Recently, there have been much efforts in the image segmentation using morphological approach. Among them, the watershed algorithm is one of powerful tools which can take advantages of both of the conventional edge-based segmentation and region-based segmentation. The concept of watershed is based on topographic analogy. But, its high sensitivity to noise yields a very large number of resulting segmented regions which leads to oversegmentation. So we suggest the restricted waterfall algorithm which reduce the oversegmentation by eliminate not only local minima but also local maxima. As a result, the restricted waterfall algorithm has a good segmented image than the other methods, and has a better binary image than the histogram thresholding method.

  • Noncontact measuring methodology of 3-dimensional profile using CCD camera are very attractive because of it's high measuring speed and it's high sensitivity. Especially when projecting a grid pattern over the object, the captured image have 3 dimensional information of the object. Projection moire extract 3-D information with another grid pattern in front of CCD camera. However phase measuring profilometry(PMP) obtain similar results without additional grid pattern. In this paper, the projection moire are compared with the PMP mathematically, and it is shown that PMP can generate moire image with simple mathematical computations. Experimental works are also carried out showing the same results. It is shown that using a single gird pattern, moire image can be obtained directly without any mathematical operation when some conditions are satisfied.

  • This paper proposes a method for generating radar images used in a ship handling simulator, which includes mathematical logics based on radar equations and information from Openflight format files. In order to make radar image much similar to that of real radar in PPI type, the proposed mathematical logic derives radar video signals under the consideration of not only the data form flight format file of simulation scenes, but also geographical radar's position. The proposed method is considered useful to make radar images in ship handling simulator with accuracy and reality.

  • John Harer conjectured that the canonical map from braid group to mapping class group induces zero homology homomorphism. To prove the conjecture it suffices to show that this map preserves the first Araki-Kudo-Dyer-Lashof operation. To get information on this homology operation we need to investigate the image of braiding under the Harer map. The main result of this paper is to give both algebraic and geometric interpretations of the image of braiding under the Harer map. For this we need to calculate long chains of consecutive actions of Dehn twists on the fundamental group of surface.
