Purpose: This correlational study was performed to identify the impacts of maternal child rearing attitudes on the menstrual attitudes and the determinants of positive menstrual attitudes in female middle school students. Methods: With convenience sampling, 198 middle school female students were recruited living in one major city and its surrounding areas in Korea. Data was collected using a self administered questionnaire including menstrual attitudes and maternal child rearing attitudes from April 1 to July 15, 2008. Results: Among the Maternal child rearing attitudes, affectionate, achievement oriented and rational attitudes had positive correlations to a positive menstrual attitude, and an autonomous attitude had a negative correlation to a negative menstrual attitude. As determinants of positive menstrual attitudes, feeling of menarche, mother's response at first menstruation, and rational maternal child rearing attitudes were delineated and their explained variance for a positive menstrual attitude was 18.5%. There was no difference on menstrual attitudes by K clustering in terms of maternal child rearing attitudes. Conclusion: These results support the critical role of the mother. Especially desirable maternal child rearing attitudes in relation to a positive menstrual attitude would be affectionate, achievement oriented and rational for early adolescent girls. In further studies, considerations are needed for menstruation related education and research for early adolescents and active involvement of the mother & daughter together.
Objective: This study examined the influence of maternal attachment on adjustment in adolescence and investigated whether paternal attachment had any moderating effects on the relationship between maternal attachment and adjustment in adolescence. Methods: The participants of this study were 300 second graders from two middle schools in Seoul. We measured paternal and maternal attachment as perceived by the participants, adjustment in adolescence through school life adjustment, depression, and relational aggression. The study applied correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis suggested by Baron and Kenny (1986). Results: First, participants with high parental attachment showed high levels of school life adjustment, low level of depression, and low levels of relational aggression, demonstrating healthy psycho-social adjustment in adolescence. Second, paternal attachment played a facilitating role in the process of high maternal attachment's positive influence on school life adjustment. Third, paternal attachment mitigated the process of low maternal attachment's negative influence on depression. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of emotional communication, support, and intimacy between parents and children in middle school. Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of the paternal role and involvement in the mother-child relationship.
The purpose of this study was to find pathways among factors that distinguish the mothers' intention to have a second child. As for factors affecting the childbirth intention of mothers, this study aimed to explore pathways from fathers' participation in childrearing to intention of second childbirth as mediating variables, maternal parenting stress and marital satisfaction. This study used the third wave data of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) that is a national-representative birth-cohort study. Among the 1,802 participants of the PSKC, 717 mothers who have a husband/partner and only one child have responded a decided intention of second childbirth. SPSS 19.0 and Amos 19.0 were used to implement exploratory analyses of predictors and test path models. Results showed that the hypothetical model assuming a path from paternal involvement in childrearing to mothers' intention of second childbirth, mediated by maternal parenting stress and marital satisfaction fitted the data of working mothers and non-working mothers well. The results suggest policies focusing on internal characteristics of mothers and dynamics in the family.
The purpose of this study was to develop 『Korean Maternal Behavior Inverntory』(KMBI). The subjects were 712 mothers of 4th-6th grade elementary school children from 5 urban cities in Korea. Item analysis. Cronbach's α, Pearson's r, Factor analysis, and Percentile norms were conducted for the purpose of the study. The major findings were as follows; 1. By the method of item analysis and factor analysis, 51 items were selected for the scale of maternal behavior. 2. A factor analysis showed 7 factors(Reasoning guidance, Affect, Antliorian Control, Achievement, Overprotection, Active Involvement, Limit Setting) as separated domains from each others. 3. The reliablity coefficient of the scale was ranged from 62 to 81 sufficient to secure reliability. 4. Percentile ranks were drived from the total score and quartiles were calculted for the each of seven factor's scores. The present study presents a potentially highly useful way of measuring maternal behavior of 4th-6th grade elementary school children in Korea.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the maternal child rearing behavior, sibling relationship, and children's social adjustment in group home and original home. Subjects of this study were 159 mothers and their children in Seoul and Gyounggi-do. Mothers responded to 'Korean Maternal Behavior Inventory', 'Sibling Relationship Questionnaire' and 'Social Maturity Scale'. The collected data were analyzed by ANCOVA, Pearson's partial correlation, factor analysis, and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for internal consistency by SPSS PC program(10.0 version). The results were as follows; first, there was a significant difference in maternal rearing behavior between group home and original home. Original home mothers showed higher scores in reasoning guidance, affect, authoritarian control, achievement, overprotection, active involvement, and limit setting. Second, there was a significant difference in sibling relationship among two different homes. Sibling relationship in original home was more worm, intimate, and competitive. Third, there was no significant difference in social adjustment in those homes. Finally, there were different correlations among those homes. In original home, there were significant correlations between maternal rearing behavior and children's social adjustment, but there were no significant correlations between those variables.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between mothers involvement of their childrens peer interaction, their memory of childhood peer relations, and their perception of childrens social competence. Subject consisted of 302 mothers of 4- to 6-year-old children. A sample of mothers completed a series of questionnaires assessing their peer experiences, perceptions about their childrens sociability, and a behavioral checklist of their involvement activities. The results indicated that mothers own sociability and their perceptions of their childrens sociability influenced their involvement. More intense maternal involvement occurred when mothers perceived their children to be sociable. Mothers with sociable peer recollections appeared to take more active role in their childrens social development.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the environmental factors and the family structure on the academic achievements of their children. Among various environmental factors, the family income, the affective relationship between mother and child, and the mother's educational involvement are considered. Total of 164 mothers with children attending elementary school completed the structured questionnaires. The degree of educational involvement of single mothers was lower than that of mothers of both parents families. In order to analyze factors that affect children's academic achievement, the path regression was performed. The family income and the mother-child affective relationship were found to have indirect effects on the academic achievements of elementary school students through maternal involvement in their children's education.
Instruments used in this study were the Peer Competence Scale(Park & Rhee, 2001), Infant Temperament Questionnaire(Chun, 1993), Emotional Intelligence Quotient Scale(Kim & Kim, 1998), Maternal Parenting Scale(Park & Lee, 1990) Parental Involvement Checklist(Cohen, 1989), and Student-Teacher Relationship Scale(Pianta, 1991). Subjects were 400 preschoolers and their mothers in Seoul. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Results indicated that (a) children of employed mothers had higher peer competence than children of unemployed mothers. (b) Closeness in teacher-child relationship was the strongest predictor for peer competence of children of employed mothers; maternal strategies promoting peer relationships was the strongest predictor for peer competence of children of unemployed mothers.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the current trend of early education and to examine the relationship between the state of early education and maternal beliefs, stress, and achievement pressure. The subjects were 275 mothers of 4∼6 year-old children in Seoul. The main results were as follows : 1) Most of the subjects' children(87.6%) were involved in early education, especially in the form of home-visit study and study papers. 2) Parental beliefs (about child development and early education) and maternal achievement pressure were significantly related to the degree of actual involvement and perceived necessity of early education. 3) Parental stress regarding child's temperament was significantly related to the starting age of early education. But the other factors of parental stress had no significant relation to the state of early education.
The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between preschooler's aggression and social skills, maternal management strategies of peer relations and parenting behaviors and preschoolers' internet-game addictive inclination. Participants included seventy-seven (77) 5 to 6-year-old preschoolers (44 boys, 33 girls) and their mothers. The Aggressive Behavior Scale (Lee & Choi, 2001), the Social Skill Rating Scale (Suh, 2004), the Maternal Parenting Behaviors Scale (Rhu & Lee, 2007) and the Parental Involvement Checklist (Park, 2001) were used in this study. The Internet Game Addiction Scale (Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity and Promotion, 2006) was used to identify higher and lower addictive level of internet-game inclination. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test. Major findings revealed that preschooler's social skills, maternal management strategies of peer relations and parenting behaviors showed a predictable correlation to preschooler's internet-game addictive inclination.
