Upcycling strategies for waste electronic and electrical equipment based on material flow analysis

  • Upcycling generally refers to the conversion of waste materials to something useful or valuable and is a useful concept that can be applied not only to the waste design industry but also to waste recycling and resource circulation. Our study highlights upcycling as the key concept for improving the value of waste by redefining the concept as "the recycling of waste materials and discarded products in ways that enhance their value." Four upcycling strategies are linked to material flow analyses conducted on waste electronic and electrical equipment, specifically waste refrigerators and waste computers, to examine the technologies available for implementation and suggest guidelines for the promotion of upcycling. The amount of waste refrigerators collected by the formal sector was 121,642 tons/y and the informal sector, 63,823 tons/y. The current recycling ratio of waste refrigerators was estimated as 88.53%. A total of 7,585 tons/y of waste computers were collected by the formal sector and 3,807 tons/y by the informal sector after discharge. Meanwhile, the current recycling ratio of waste computers was estimated as 77.43%. We found that it is possible to introduce 28 upcycling technologies in the case of refrigerators, and 15 technologies are available to promote upcycling in the case of computers. By refining the broad concept of upcycling and looking at the stages of material flow, our approach presents universally applicable directions for incorporating upcycling in resource recovery and recirculation plans.

  • 본 연구에서는 폐자동차의 재활용 향상을 위하여 전량 소각 및 매립에 의해 처리되고 있는 폐자동차 tail lamp를 해체공정에서 회수하고, 마찰하전형정전선별법을 적용하여 재질분리 연구를 수행하였다. 하전특성 연구결과 PMMA재질이 폐자동차 tail lamp의 재질분리에 효과적인 하전물질로 확인되어, PMMA재질을 사용한 cyclone 하전장치를 개발하였다. 본 연구에서 개발된 cyclone 하전장치를 이용한 마찰하전형정전선별 실험결과, 최적 실험조건에서 폐자동차 tail lamp로부터 PMMA 재질의 품위와 회수율이 각각 99.0%와 90.2%인 결과를 얻어, 폐자동차 tail lamp를 재활용 할 수 있는 재질분리 기술을 확립하였다.

라이너지 제조공정 탈수 슬러지의 scum 재이용 가능성 평가 (The Evaluation of Scum Recyclability from Waste Sludge in Linerboard Mills)

  • For the purpose of reduction of production cost in the industrial papermaking process, the use of waste paper has been more and more increased as a fibrous raw material, and the closed system of white water became closed more than ever. "Scum" indicates the floated sludge by a flotation during primary wastewater treatment process in paper mills. If the scum is used as the raw material, it could reduce both the raw material and solid waste treatment cost with even small quantity. In this study, the element survey and the toxicity measurement was carried out for recycling scum. A load factor of stock preparation process in paper mills was measured by somerville screen. Physical properties of paper sheet containing the accepted scum from the stock of AOCC or KOCC were evaluated. The result of this study shows that recycling scum has potential to be used in paper making system. It also might be able to reduce the required energy used by the pressing or drainage process, the raw material cost, and solid waste treatment cost due to the recycling of scum.

  • Recently, it is necessary to establish an eco-friendly construction system through recycling of waste material management at construction sites. This is required to reflect the times that require a carbon reduction system in construction as part of domestic and overseas carbon dioxide reduction. Therefore, we intend to establish eco-friendly construction management as part of resource recycling and carbon reduction through recycling technology for waste fibers generated at construction sites.

폐 PET병의 재활용을 위한 기계적 분리 (Mechanical Separation of Wasted PET Bottle for Recycling)

  • PETqudds 부위별로 PET, HDPE, PVC, PP와 같은 여러 가지 다른 종류의 플라스틱으로 이루어져 있어 페 PET병의 재활용을 위하여서는 구성 성분별로 분리가 선행되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 부상침강법에 의한 분리실험을 실시하였다. 수돗물을 사용하여 라벨을 제거한 후 부상침강 분리시키면 94%의 PET 회수율을 얻을 수 있었다. 라벨이 있을 경우에는 PVC와 PET가 침강하고 PP와 HDPE가 부상하므로 완전히 PET를 회수 할 수 없었다. 따라서 라벨을 제거시킨 후 분리를 시키든지 PVC 라벨의 재질을 PP나 PE로 교체하는 방안이 강구되어야 할 것으로 사료된다. 회수한 PET와 HDPE의 각종 물성을 측정하여 원재료와 비교해 본 결과 이들의 재활용이 가능함을 알 수 있었다.

폐가공송전선 Al선재 재활용 기술개발 (The Recycling Technology for Aged Aluminum Wire in Overhead Conductor)

  • The new recycling technology for aged aluminum wires in overhead conductor has been carried out. The authors are attempting to develop remanufacturing method for them for more effective way of recycling in stead of its conventional remelting process. The new recycling technology for aged aluminum wire in overhead conductor was composed of four steps in different develop process, destranding process for conductor, surface cleaning process, welding process and drawing process for aluminum wire. This paper investigates the properties during recycle process of aged aluminum wire. The results of microscopic analysis and mechanical properties were discussed to underscore recycling aluminum wire. Various graphs are presented accompanied by discussion about their relevance on the process. In conclusion, we confirmed the possibility of remanufacturing technique by using new process.

  • 최근 금속-복합재료 하이브리드 구조는 설계 유연성과 우수한 기계적 특성 때문에 자동차나 항공기 등 다양한 분야에 응용이 가능한 매우 매력적인 소재 시스템이 되었다. 한편, 버려지는 재료를 줄이고 환경 오염을 막기 위한 재활용이 아주 중요해졌다. 많은 국가에서 자동차나 전자제품의 재활용 규정을 만들어 적용하고 있으나, 금속-복합재료 하이브리드 구조는 아직 연구개발 및 응용의 초기 단계로 재활용에 대해서는 충분히 고려되지 않고 있다. 본 연구에서는 재활용 업체에서 도입할 수 있는 금속-복합재료 하이브리드 구조의 재활용 프로세스를 개발하고 최적화하였다.

재활용품 회수용 환경로봇 수명시험 장치 구성에 관한 연구 (A study on the development of life test equipment for eco-robot for collecting recycling products)

  • Eco-robot for collecting recycling products is the machine which collects non-industrial wastes such as cans, PET bottles and etc. to reuse them as recycling resources. This eco-robot is operated in the condition that it should compress and hold various products without knowing their geometric shapes and material properties. For this reason reliability problems like malfunction or failure. comes to emerge, but the reliability test conditions to assess its performance and durability have not been founded yet. Therefore in this research failure mechanism of the eco-robot was analyzed and life test equipment which can reproduce actual usage conditions was developed. The compression levels in the life test were determined by measuring the crushing force acting on test products and Furthermore the test specimens which have equivalent shape and material properties with those of cans and PET bottles were proposed by simulating the deformation characteristics so that the actual compression conditions were set up in the test.
