  • To avoid the damage to circuit and performance degradation by temperature changes, temperature sensing circuit applicable to the IC is proposed in this paper. Temperature sensing is executed by PTAT circuit and power saving mode is activated by internal switch if internal temperature is in high. Also, characteristics of current matching are increased by using current mirror and cascode circuits. From the simulation results, this circuit is operating in action mode if input signal is in low. But it immediately goes into power saving mode if output signal is in high. It shows the output voltage of 1V at $75^{\circ}C$ and 1.75V at $125^{\circ}C$ in action mode and near 0 V(0V~ 7uV) in power saving mode.

  • DC-DC buck converter is a critical building block in the power management integrated circuit (PMIC) architecture for the portable devices such as cellular phone, personal digital assistance (PDA) because of its power efficiency over a wide range of conversion ratio. To ensure a safe operation, avoid unexpected damages and enhance the reliability of the converter, fully-integrated protection circuits such as over voltage protection (OVP), under voltage lock out (UVLO), startup, and thermal shutdown (TSD) blocks are designed. In this paper, these three fully-integrated protection circuit blocks are proposed for use in the DC-DC buck converter. The buck converter with proposed protection blocks is operated with a switching frequency of 1 MHz in continuous conduction mode (CCM). In order to verify the proposed scheme, the buck converter has been designed using a 180 nm CMOS technology. The UVLO circuit is designed to track the input voltage and turns on/off the buck converter when the input voltage is higher/lower than 2.6 V, respectively. The OVP circuit blocks the buck converter's operation when the input voltage is over 3.3 V, thereby preventing the destruction of the devices inside the controller IC. The TSD circuit shuts down the converter's operation when the temperature is over $85^{\circ}C$. In order to verify the proposed scheme, these protection circuits were firstly verified through the simulation in SPICE. The proposed protection circuits were then fabricated and the measured results showed a good matching with the simulation results.

  • An MMIC downconverting mixer for cellular phone application has been successfully developed using an MMIC process including $1 \mu\textrm{m}$ ion implanted gaAs MESFET and passive lumped elements consisting of spiral inductor, $Si_3N_4$ MIM capacitor and NiCr resistor. The configuration of the mixer presented in this paper is single-ended dual-gate FET mixer with common-source self-bias circuits for single power supply operation. The dimension of the fabricated circuit is $1.4 mm \times 1.03 mm $ including all input matching circuits and a mixing circuit. The conversion gian and noise figure of the mixer at LO powr of 0 dBm are 5.5dB and 19dB, respectively. The two-tone IM3 characteristics are also measured, showing -60dBc at RF power of -30dBm. Allisolations between each port show better than 20dB.

  • For the piezoelectric vibrator, PZT, in a general transmit-receive sensor using the ultrasonic flowmeter, the characteristics of frequency response relating to the backing materials were analyzed with the Mason equivalent circuit for design and the sensitivity of fabricated transducer relating to the matching materials was measured and discussed. The results those were measured in water for the transmit-receive characteristics of each transducer can be applied to the flowmeter sensor.

  • In this work, a highly integrated downconverter MMIC employing HBT(heterojunction bipolar transistor) was developed for application to one chip tranceiver solution of Ku-band commercial wireless communication system. The downconverter MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuit) includes mixer filter. amplifier and input/output matching circuit. Especially, spiral inductor structures employing SiN film were used for a suppression of LO and its second harmonic leakage signals. Concretely, they were properly designed so that the self-resonance frequency was accurately tuned to LO and its second harmonic frequency, and they were integrated on the downconverter MMIC.

  • As a new algorithm for RC tree delay estimation, we propose a $\tau$-model of the driver and a moment propagation method. The $\tau$-model represents the driver as a Thevenin equivalent circuit which has a one-time-constant voltage source and a linear resistor. The new driver model estimates the input voltage waveform applied to the RC more accurately than the k-factor model or the 2-piece waveform model. Compared with Elmore method, which is a lst-order approximation, the moment propagation method, which uses $\pi$-model loads to calculate the moments of the voltage waveform on each node of RC trees, gives more accurate results by performing higher-order approximations with the same simple tree walking algorithm. In addition, for the instability problem which is common to all the approximation methods using the moment matching technique, we propose a heuristic method which guarantees a stable and accureate 2nd order approximation. The proposed driver model and the moment propagation method give an accureacy close to SPICE results and more than 1000 times speedup over circuit level simulations for RC trees and FPGA interconnects in which the interconnect delay is dominant.

  • Determination of component mounting sequence on printed circuit board assembly process is a typical NP-hard problem. It is a kind of traveling salesman problems, but it has one more hard to meet constraint of matching component type per mounting position as well as searching the shortest path. An efficient method is developed by separation of crowed area and allowing up to two slots per component type. A simulation model is constructed using Visual C++ for evaluation of the suggested heuristic.

  • A highly efficient linear and compactly integrated series-type Doherty power amplifier (PA) has been developed for wideband code-division multiple access handset applications. To overcome the size limit of a typical Doherty amplifier, all circuit elements, such as matching circuits and impedance transformers, are fully integrated into a single monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC). The implemented PA shows a very low idle current of 25 mA and an excellent power-added efficiency of 25.1% at an output power of 19 dBm by using an extended Doherty concept. Accordingly, its average current consumption was reduced by 51% and 41% in urban and suburban environments, respectively, when compared with a class-AB PA. By adding a simple predistorter to the PA, the PA showed an adjacent channel leakage ratio better than -42 dBc over the whole output power range.

  • A compact metamaterial (MTM)-based tunable phase shifter consisting of four unit cells with a simple DC bias circuit has been designed at 2.4 GHz. The variable series capacitors and shunt inductors that are required to be loaded periodically onto a host transmission line are realized employing only chip variable capacitors (varactors). In addition, the proposed phase shifter requires only one DC bias source to control the varactors, with the matching condition of the MTM line automatically satisfied. The measured phase shifting range is $285.2^{\circ}$ (from $-74.2^{\circ}$ to $211^{\circ}$). The measured insertion loss is approximately 1.5 dB. The circuit/electromagnetic-simulated and measured results are in good agreement.
