Railroads have been developed as public transportation and made a great contribution to national economic growth. But after the mid-20th century, its qualities have been getting low because of focusing on the investment and development of cars and airplanes. Its role which is getting the excellent merits on the mass transportation, rapid transit, safety, state period, energy efficiency, and prevention of environmental pollution has been reconsidered. Elements of horizontal alignment are needed in the case where the existing railroad lines should be improved or moved. If its design drawing was lost or damaged, it is impossible to recover. It is not easy to repair for it as disasters. We must understand an existing railroad line to bring a function included a basic geography situation. In this study, we acquire, analyze, and process the digital images of the railroad and then reappear shape of three dimension. And we expect to be utilized to construct the facility information by extracting the alignment elements of existing railroad lines reversely.

This paper is focused on studying the undrained cyclic triaxial behavior of saturated Nak-dong River sand, using anisotropically consolidated specimens. A test of isotropically consolidated specimens was performed to compare the results of the anisotropically consolidated specimens. The cyclic shear stre3ngth of the sand under various combinations of initial static shear stress and relative density was considered. Failure was defined as a 5% double amplitude cyclic strain and a 5% residual axial strain for both reversal stress and no reversal stress conditions. Using this definition, the cyclic strength of the anisotropically consolidated specimens was affected by the initial static shear stress. For anisotropically consolidated Nak-dong River dense sand, the cyclic strength is greater than that of Toyolura silica sand but is smaller than that of Dogs Bay carbonate sand. By comparing the experimental and predictecl results, it was possible to predict the residual pore pressure of Nak-dong River sand using Hyodo's model with initial static shear stress subjected cyclic loading.

The Korean railway system is a mass transit system consisting of a variety of train types such as common trains, high-speed train (KTX) and Metropolitan Express Railway (EMU). Its operation is based on the official timetable and it provides us with safe, accurate, quick and comfortable service. The objective of this study is to propose and prove more practical method for estimating line capacity by considering high-speeding and diversification of trains. In particular, the focus of this study is to reduce the discrepancy between the result of the theoretical line capacity estimation and the real line capacity of the operating agency of the Korean railway. In order to achieve the object, this study introduces a new railway capacity notion by considering TPS of line alignment, the operation type, train control and signaling system, etc. Through a practical schedule diagram exemplification, the result of the proposed method is verified as well.

The objective of this study is to propose a method for estimating line capacity considering high-speeding and diversification of trains. In particular, the focus of this study is on the closing gap between the result of the existing line capacity estimation method and the real-world line capacity of the operating agency of the Korean railway. For this, this study introduces a new railway capacity definition by considering TPS of line alignment according to the operation type, train control and signaling system, etc. The verification of the proposed method using a practical schedule diagram exemplification is discussed as well.
To improve the forecast capability of geomagnetic storms, we consider the real time solar and near Earth conditions together, since the characteristics of CMEs can be modified during their transit from the Sun to the Earth, and the geomagnetic storms may be directly affected by not only solar events but also near Earth interplanetary conditions. Using 55 CME-Dst pairs associated with M- and X-class solar flares, which have clearly identifiable source regions during 1997 to 2003, we confirm that the peak values of negative magnetic field Bz and duskward electric field Ey prior to Dst minimum are strongly related with Dst index. We suggest the solar wind criteria (Bz<-5 nT or Ey>3 mV/m for t>2 hr) for moderate storm less than -50 nT by modifying the criteria for intense storms less than -100 nT proposed by Gonzalez and Tsurutani (GT, 1987). As the results, 90% (28/31) of the storms are correctly forecasted by our criteria. For 15 exceptional events that are incorrectly forecasted by only CME parameters, 12 cases (80%) can be properly forecasted by solar wind criteria. When we applying CME and solar wind conditions together, all geomagnetic storms (Dst<-50 nT) are correctly forecasted. Our results show that, the storm forecast capability of the 2~3 days advanced warning based on CME parameters can be improved by combining with the urgent warning based on the near Earth solar wind condition.
This paper considers the problem of revising train departure time to reduce electric power consumption of mass rapid transit (MRT) railways. The motion of a train running between stations is divided into three phases: traction, coasting, and deceleration phases. The traction phase requires high electric power to operate MRT railways. In the coasting phase, the train moves stably by consuming little or no power. The deceleration phase is a braking mode and produces some electric power called regenerated brake power owing to inertia force for the train generated In the traction and coasting phases. The regenerative energy can be used by other accelerating trains within a specific range from the train and thereby the power consumptions of train can be reduced. We developed a mixed integer programming model to solve the problem. To validate the suggested model, a computational experiment was conducted using real data from Korea Metropolitan Subway.

The safety of the railway system is important because the system is a mass transit system and the results of the accident are inconceivable. The railway system is operated by train operation system such as train control system. So the train control system requires safety critical characteristics. In the European railway, ETCS (European Train Control System) project has been finished to accomplish the interoperability of each national railway signaling system. According to the interoperability degree, ETCS levels are suggested. As the highest level, ETCS level 3 suggests a radio communication. Also recently urban railway system is operated by driverless and automatic train control system. In this circumstance, more safety is required than before in the railway system. In order to accomplish the safety of a system, the requirements considering safety have to be suggested. The requirement is a set of several functions such as general function, environment, safety etc. For the safety critical system, safety function is more important than any other functions. The safety functions are deduced by safety analysis. In order to perform the safety analysis, the system hazards have to be identified and then risk analysis for each hazard should be performed. The risk is related to the frequency and the severity of each hazard. And then countermeasures for each risk have to be prepared. The summary of the countermeasures is about a kind of safety functions in a system. In this paper, the safety functions for a train control system are presented according to the above procedure.
The articulated structures seen in train or tram applications are being applied in road transportation systems, for use in mass passenger transit. When articulated vehicles are driven on public roads, they no longer follow a guided track. Therefore, there are a lot of control elements that need to be considered, such as turning radius, swept path width, off-tracking, and swing-out. Some of the currently available articulated vehicles on roads are equipped with an independent drive system; a system that has one motor at each wheel. Through this drive system, each wheel can be independently controlled, making precise and quick dynamic stability control possible. In this paper, we propose a torque distribution algorithm that can reduce the overall turning radius of the articulated vehicle, which has been verified through dynamic simulation.

Identifying the exact train and the type of train boarded by passengers is practically cumbersome. Previous studies identified the trains boarded by each passenger by matching the Automated Fare Collection (AFC) data and the train schedule diagram. However, this approach has been shown to be inefficient as the exact train boarded by a considerable number of passengers cannot be accurately determined. In this study, we demonstrate that the AFC data - diagram matching technique could not estimate 28% of the train type selected by passengers using the Seoul Metro line no.9. To obtain more accurate results, this paper developed a two-step method for estimating the train type boarded by passengers by applying the AFC data - diagram matching method followed by a mixture distribution analysis. As a result of the analysis, we derived reasonable express train use/non-use passenger classification points based on 298 origin-destination pairs that satisfied the verification criteria of this study.
John Glenn, America's first man to eat anything in the near-weightless environment of Earth orbit, found the task of eating fairly easy. With improved packaging came improved food quality and menus. By the time of the Apollo Program, the quality and variety of food increased even further. Apollo astronauts were the first to have hot water, which made rehydrating foods easier and improved the food's taste. Thermostabilized pouches were also introduced on Apollo. The task of eating in space got a big boost in Skylab. It also had a food freezer and refrigerator a convenience offered by no other vehicle before or since. Two different food systems will be used for future long-duration missions to other planets, one for traveling to and from the distant body and one for use on the surface of the moon or Mars. The transit food system will be similar to the space station food system with the exception that products with three-to five-year shelf lives will be needed. Thus, this part of the trip will be similar to what occurs aboard space missions now. The surface food system, be it lunar or planetary, will be quite different. It will be similar to a vegetarian diet that someone could cook on Earth. Once crew members arrive on the surface and establish living quarters, they can start growing crops. Once the crops are processed into edible ingredients, cooking will be done in the spacecraft's galley to make the food items. Disposal of used food packaging will be an issue since there will be no Progress vehicles to send off and incinerate into the Earth's atmosphere. Packaging materials will be used that have less mass but sufficient barrier properties for oxygen and water to maintain shelf life as those now in use.
