  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of increased running speed on the magnitude of impact shock attenuation in high frequency (9~20 Hz) at support phase on the treadmill running. Method: Twenty-four healthy male heel-toe runners participated in this study. Average age, height, mass, and preference running speed were 23.43±3.78 years, 176.44±3.38 cm, 71.05±9.04 kg, and 3.0±0.5 m/s, respectively. Three triaxial accelerometer (Noraxon, USA) were mounted to the tuberosity of tibia, PSIS (postero-superior iliac spine), and forehead to collect acceleration signals, respectively. Accelerations were collected for 20 strides at 1,000 Hz during treadmill (Bertec, USA) running at speed of 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 m/s. Power Spectrum Density (PSD) of three acceleration signals was calculated to use in transfer function describing the gain and attenuation of impact shock between the tibia and PSIS, and forehead. One-way ANOVA were performed to compare magnitude of shock attenuation between and within running speeds. The alpha level for all statistical tests was .05. Results: No significant differences resulted for magnitude of the vertical and resultant impact shock attenuation between the tibia and PSIS, and forehead between running speeds. However, significant differences within running speed were found in magnitude of the vertical shock attenuation between tibia and PSIS, tibia and forehead at speed of 2.5, 3.0 m/s, respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, it might be conjectured that muscles covering the knee and ankle joints and shoe's heel pad need to strengthen to keep the lower extremities from injuries by impact shock at relatively fast running speed that faster than preferred running speed.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different volume ($100{\mu}l$ vs. 2 ml) of microdrop culture on B6D2F1 mice oogenesis. In the present study, B6D2F1/CrljOri $F_1$ mice were utilized in order to maximize oogenesis. Also we used TCM-199, Dulbecco's medified Eagle's medium (DMEM), embryo culture medium (Fertilization medium, Cleavage medium, Blastocyst medium), G series medium and One step medium. Blastulation rate was not different between groups ($58.4{\pm}2.9%$ vs. $61.2{\pm}4.8%$). Zona hatched rate ($38{\pm}15.4%$ vs. $27{\pm}3.4%$) and attached rate ($55{\pm}13.9%$ vs. $46{\pm}3.9%$) did not differ by the volume of culture media. Total cell numbers ($59.8{\pm}9.7$ vs. $70.3{\pm}8.7$), ICM cell numbers ($15.8{\pm}0.6$ vs. $16.8{\pm}1.5$), TE cell numbers ($44.0{\pm}9.7$ vs. $53.6{\pm}7.3$), % ICM ($26.4{\pm}2.9%$ vs. $23.8{\pm}3.3%$) and ICM:TE ratio ($1:2.8{\pm}0.4$ vs. $1:3.2{\pm}0.6$) were not different between groups (i.e., $100{\mu}l$ vs. 2 ml). These results show that the capacity of the culture medium did not effect the cell numbers of B6D2F1 mice blastocysts. In summary, these results can provide fundamental data to maximize culture condition for in vitro fertilization on B6D2F1 mice.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional hydrogen desorption model is developed to precisely study the hydrogen desorption kinetics and resultant heat and mass transport phenomena in metal hydride hydrogen storage vessels. The metal hydride hydrogen desorption model, i.e. governed by the conservation of mass, momentum, and thermal energy is first experimentally validated against the temperature evolution data measured on a cylindrical $LaNi_5$ metal hydride vessel. The equilibrium pressure used for hydrogen desorption simulations is derived as a function of H/M atomic ratio and temperature based on the experimental data in the literature. The numerical simulation results agree well with experimental data and the 3D desorption model successfully captures key experimental trends during hydrogen desorption process. Both the simulation and experiment display an initial sharp decrease in the temperature mainly caused by relatively slow heat supply rate from the vessel external wall. On the other hand, the effect of heat supply becomes influential at the latter stages, leading to smooth increase in the vessel temperature in both simulation and experiment. This numerical study provides the fundamental understanding of detailed heat and mass transfer phenomena during hydrogen desorption process and further indicates that efficient design of storage vessel and heating system is critical to achieve fast hydrogen discharging performance.

  • The design strategy of the multi-functional structure is that the electrical components and the circuits are directly put on their supporting structural panel in which the radiation shields and the thermal control functions are integrated. Applying the multi-functional structure reduces the total mass and size of the space system and makes it possible to lower launch cost. In present study the performance of thermal radiation for six types of multi-functional structure are investigated by the numerical method. The effect of the rib configuration on heat transfer for the multi-functional-structure is not important alone but is meaningful considering with the structural stiffness, difficulty of manufacturing and mass increase. In heat spreading point of view, the thickness of the outer conductive layer is important rather than the rib configuration and the trade-off study with the mass and thickness is required for optimum design.

  • Adsorption chillers have been receiving considerable attentions as they are energy-saving and environmentally benign systems. In order to evaluate adsorption rates, experiments were performed in the batch type adsorption apparatus. Three types of silica gels were investigated under an assortment of experimental conditions that are representatives of the actual operating environments in the adsorber of adsorption chillers. Experimental results revealed the effects of silica gel particle size, bed temperature, and fin pitch of fin tube on the adsorption rate. The $0.25\~1.18mm$ particle size of silica gel with high adsorption rate was selected as a suitable adsorbent. The measured adsorption rate became bigger with decreasing particle size. From the comparison of adsorption rate, it is found that the fin tube has about $21\%$ higher value than that of the bare tube. The effect of heat and mass flux is found to be more significant in the fin tube than in the bare tube.

  • This study was examined the effects of concentrations of polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) and supplementation of EGF, cysteine and PVP during in vitro maturation on the development of bovine embryos. In experiment 1, 0.1 to 3.0% PVP was supplemented to IVM medium before IVF. The development rates to the blastocyst stage was significantly higher in 0.5% PVP group than 3.0% PVP group (P<0.05). In experiment 2, EGF, rysteine and PVP were supplemented to IVM medium. The hight cleavage rate was obtained from cysteine group, but blastocyst formation rates did not differ among groups. The highest total cell number and inner cell mass (ICM) cell number were observed in cysteine group. In PVP group, ICM cell number was significantly low than those of cysteine and control groups (P<0.05). After embryo transfer, pregnancy rate was significantly low in PVP group compared to other groups (P<0.05). These results indicate that the supplementation of PVP in IVM medium support the embryo development, but has a deteriorate effect on the blastocyst quality.

  • The current study focused on the effect of twisting hollow fibers (HFs) in a module during forward osmosis operation mode. Computational fluid dynamics simulation was employed for a straight HF module and twisted modules with five different angles to predict the mass transfer and observe the draw solution profile in terms of concentration and pressure. The simulation results showed that when the membranes were twisted, the concentration was distributed more evenly and the pressure at the module outlet increased gradually as the twisting angle increased. As pressure at the outlet increased, the fluid velocity inside the membrane decreased and the residence time of fluid increased, thereby facilitating mass exchange across the membrane. This is evidenced by a doubling of the ratio of water flux through the membrane in module flux when the HFs were twisted.

  • Pool boiling heat transfer coefficients of a LiBr solution were obtained for seven low fin tubes having different fin pitch and fin height. The test range covered saturation pressure from 7.38kPa to 101.3kPa, heat flux from $20kW/m^2$ to $40 kW/m^2$ and LiBr concentration from 0% to 50%. The optimum fin geometry for the present experimental range turned out to be 26 fpi with 0.18 mm fin height. The advantage of added heat transfer area and the disadvantage of slower bubble growth and departure appear to have yielded an optimum fin pitch. The heat transfer coefficient decreased as saturation pressure decreased and Libr concentration increased. The reason may be attributed to the low saturation pressure, which increased the bubble departure diameter and decreased the bubble departure frequency. As the LiBr concenreation increased, the saturation temperature increased and the mass diffusion rate decreased, which resulted in a reduced heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficients of the low fin tube were greater than those of the smooth tube. Correlations were developed based on the present data.
