  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration characteristics of tapered beams with translational and rotational springs and tip masses at the ends. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered beams is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the translational spring parameter, the rotational spring parameter, the mass ratio and the dimensionless mass moment of inertia.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of stepped cantilever columns with a tip mass of rotatory inertia and a translational spring at one end. The column model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibration of columns with stepwise variable cross-section and subjected to a subtangential follower force is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. And the bisection method is used to calculate the critical divergence/flutter load. The frequency and critical divergence/flutter load for the stepped column with a single step are presented as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters: the segmental length parameter, the section ratio, the subtangential parameter, the mass, the moment of inertia of the mass, and the spring parameter.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze gear rattle in a power drive line using its dynamic model and to derive design guidelines to eliminate it. A 72 degrees of freedom model of power driveline of an agricultural tractor was developed and proved to be valid fer predicting the collision characteristics of gears in mesh, which may determine whether or not the gear rattle will occur. Using the model the effects on the rattle of drag torque, backlash, mass moment of inertia, transmitting torque were analyzed. Increasing drag torque or decreasing mass moment of inertia reduced gear rattle. The gears transmitting power do not develop rattles. It was also found that a large amount of rattle is likely to be developed by the change gears placed at the end of idle shafts. Increasing the drag torque to such change gears may be the most effective way of reducing the gear rattle in a tractor driveline.

  • This study is concerned about the optimal design of the arm 1 and arm 2 in the SCARA robot. The mass and inertia moment of the arm I and arm 2 in a SCARA robot is greatly affected on the performance such as a cycle time, and torques loaded on $1^{st}$ axis and $2^{nd}$ axis. To reduce the mass and inertia moment, this study carried out optimal design by FEM analysis using parametric variables, which is a width, a height of the rib and a thickness of arm in the arm. The rib is adapted instead of reducing the thickness in the arm. And the simulation by computer was conducted on two given paths in X direction and Y direction. After optimal design, the result showed that maximum torque of $1^{st}$ axis and $2^{nd}$ axis reduced to maximum 9.5% on a given path.

  • Modern vehicles require a high degree of refinement, including good driveability to meet customer demands. Vehicle driveability, which becomes a key decisive factor for marketability, is affected by many parameters such as engine control and the dynamic characteristics in drive lines. Therefore, Engine and drive train characteristics should be considered to achieve a well balanced vehicle response simultaneously. This paper describes analysis procedures using a mathematical model which has been developed to simulate spark timing control logic. Inertia mass moment, stiffness and damping coefficient of engine and drive train were simulated to analyze the effect of parameters which were related vehicle dynamic behavior. Inertia mass moment of engine and stiffness of drive line were shown key factors for the shuffle characteristics. It was found that torque increase rate, torque reduction rate and torque recovery timing and rate influenced the shuffle characteristics at the tip-in condition for the given system in this study.

Vehicle driveability, which becomes a key decisive factor f3r marketability, is affected by many parameters such as engine control and the dynamic characteristics in drive lines. Therefore engine and drive train characteristics should be considered to achieve a well balanced vehicle response simultaneously. This paper describes experimental procedures which have been developed to measure engine torque and investigate shuffle characteristics. To analyze the vehicle dynamic behavior, fractional torques and inertia mass moment of engine, and drive train were measured. Shuffle characteristics during tip-in condition were investigated in an experimental vehicle at 2nd and 3rd gear stages. It was found that the shuffle characteristics were caused by sudden changes of engine torque and have a different vibration frequency with gear stage variation. Inertia mass moment of engine including flywheel rotation showed a key factor for the shuffle characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of rotating unbalance mass on vibration characteristics of the front axle. The power-train systemof the vehicle is composed of several rotating parts. These component parts should be properly balanced by the balancing machine, however, sometimes these have the unbalance mass which causes the critical vibration in the vehicle. Therefore, this study suggests the vibration improvement method based on reducing the unbalance mass through changing the assembly type between the companion flange and the constant velocity joints. In addition, the way to increase the inertia moment of the companion flange was proposed.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of immersed columns with soft base. The support condition of the column is represented by using a translational spring and a rotational spring. The eccentricity and rotatory inertia of the concentrated mass at the top are taken into account. In the governing equation for the free vibration of column, the density of immersed part was modified to account for the added fluid mass. The governing differential equations are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented to show the effects on the natural frequencies of non-dimensional system parameters: the mass density ratio of fluid to column, the ratio of fluid depth to span length, the ratio of tip mass to total column mass, the dimensionless mass moment of inertia, the eccentricity, the translation spring parameter, and the rotational spring parameter.

  • In this paper, we developed modeling of tension and speed dynamics for a two-drum winder in a three span continuous web transport system which had not been previously. Dynamic modeling of the time-varying nonlinear system was derived by considering the effect of the radii and mass moment of inertia in the unwinder and the two-drum winder through winding up the web. After linearizing it, we designed with a variable-gain a PID controller for tension control and a PI controller for speed. Simulation is carried out with the variation of radii and moment of inertia at high speed for the proposed tension control system with the two-drum winder and the variavle-gain a PID controller. Results show good performance of tension control during the speed change speed at a start-up and stop.
