  • This study presents the performance evaluation of a tuned mass damper (TMD) for controlling seismic responses of the nonlinear hysteretic structure represented by a Bouc-Wen model, considering that the general reinforce concrete building structures subject to earthquake load show nonlinear hysteretic behavior. Numerical analysis result indicates that the performance of a passive TMD of which design parameters are optimized for a elastic structure deteriorates when the hysteretic portion of the structural responses increases, while a semi-actively operated TMD shows about 15-40% more response reduction than the TMD.

  • Quality of concrete required to achieve the desired levels of strength and durability depend on the effectiveness of the curing method. During cold weather, the concrete at the time of placement should be taken to prevent damage to concrete due to freezing. Since the cement-water reaction is exothermic by nature, the temperature within mass concrete can be quite high. The temperature control for massive sections should be taken more careful than for shallow sections. However, in the constructing hydraulic structures, the curing temperature control for concrete had been very difficult to be taken in a proper way because the conditions constructing them are poor and contractors are small enterprises. For several. reasons including above, Rural Research Institute has developed a device and program for recording curing temperature history in cold weather concrete and mass. As there are two major advantages of the device, namely cheapness and availability, this program and device has been recommended to the use of curing temperature control in cold weather concrete and mass.

  • Precise estimation f a structure's dynamic characteristics is indispensable for ensuring stable dynamic response during life time especially for the structures which can experience resonance such as railway bridges. Especially, concrete track can change the modal properties of the railway bridge, through the contribution of stiffness as well as mass effects, generally only the mass effect is considered in dynamic analysis of the railway bridge. In this paper, static and dynamic behaviors of railway bridge with concrete track were investigated through experimental study. Also, numerical analysis was performed about considering only mass of concrete track and together with stiffness and mass of concrete track. These were compared with experiment value. Numerical analysis value considering together with stiffness and mass of concrete track was similar experiment value. Therefore, when dynamic analysis of railway bridge with concrete track is performed, the contribution of stiffness as well as mass effects for concrete track is considered.

  • In order to control hydration heat in mass concrete, pipe cooling method has been widely used. The pipe cooling method leads to the decrease of curing period by lagging materials as well as the decrease of temperature difference between center and surface of mass concrete member, There are two methods in the pipe cooling system, which are open loop system and closed loop system. However open loop pipe cooling system cannot be applied to the mass concrete structures when cooling water supply is difficult. To control hydration heat of high strength mass foundation in the central area of city, closed loop pipe cooling system was developed to solve the cooling water supply. This paper reports the performance results of hydration heat control with closed loop pipe cooling system.

  • This study investigates the effectiveness of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) in controlling vibrations in low-rise reinforced concrete buildings. It examines both linear and nonlinear behaviors of concrete structures subjected to strong ground motions from the PEER database. The research follows the ASCE 7-16 provisions to model structural nonlinearity. Additionally, the study explores the effect of varying TMD mass ratios on the performance of these systems in real-world conditions. The findings emphasize the importance of accounting for structural nonlinearity in low-rise buildings, highlighting its significant influence on the controlled response under severe seismic excitations. The study suggests including nonlinear analysis in seismic design practices and recommends customizing TMD designs to optimize vibration control. These recommendations have practical implications for enhancing the safety and effectiveness of seismic design practices for low-rise buildings.

  • The heat of hydration of cement the causes the internal temperature rise at early age, particulary in massive concrete structures such as a mat-slab of nuclear reactor building or a dam or a large footing. As the result of the temperature rise and restraint of foundation, the thermal stress enough to induce concrete cracks can occur. Therefore, the prediction of the thermal stress is very important in the design and construction stages in order to control the cracks developed in massive concrete structures. And, more creep and shrinkage take place at elevated temperatures in young concrete, Thus the effect of creep and shrinkage must be considered for checking the safety and servicebility(crack, durability and leakage).

  • Various method have been developed for mass concrete structures to reduce the temperature increase of concrete mass due to exothermic hydration reactions of concrete compounds and thereby to avoid thermal cracks. One of the methods widely acceptable for practical use is pipe cooling, in which cooling is achieved by circulating cold water through thin-wall steel pipes embedded in the concrete. A numerical simulation was performed to investigate the effectiveness of pipe cooling. A three-dimensional finite element method was proposed to analyse the transient three-dimensional heat transfer between the hardening concrete and the cooling water in pipe and to predict the stress development during the curing process. The effects of the cement type and content and the environment were taken into consideration by the heat generation rate and the boundary conditions, respectively. In order to test the validity of the numerical simulation, a model RC structure with pipe cooling was constructed and the time-dependent temperature and stress distributions within the structure as well as the variation of the temperature of cooling water along the pipe were measured. The results of the simulation agreed well the experimental measurements. The results of this study have important implications for the optimal design of the cooling pipe layout and for the estimation of thermal stress in order to eliminate thermal cracks.

  • Steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich composite structure with corrugated-strip connectors (CSC) has the potential to be used in buildings and offshore structures. In this structure, CSCs are used to bond steel face plates and concrete. To overcome executive problems, in the proposed system by the authors, shear connectors are one end welded as double skin composites. Hence, this system double skin with corrugated-strip connectors (DSCS) is named. In this paper, finite element model (FEM) of push-out test was presented for the basic component of DSCS. ABAQUS/Explicit solver in ABAQUS was used due to the geometrical complexity of the model, especially in the interaction of the shear connectors with concrete. In order that the explicit analysis has a quasi-static behavior with a proper approximation, the kinetic energy (ALLKE) did not exceed 5% to 10% of the internal energy (ALLIE) using mass-scaling. The FE analysis (FEA) was validated against those from the push-out tests in the previous work of the authors published in this journal. By comparing load-slip curves and failure modes, FEMs with suitable analysis speed were consistent with test results.
