This study explores the life quality(LQ) of Korean married women compared to Korean married men's LQ, examines personal factors' and home environmental factors' influences to Korean married women's LQ via psychological factors such as social belongingness, positive emotion, self-esteem, and sense of intemal control in causal model, and explores Korean married women's perceived important factors and perceived enhancement required factors in life. The questionnaire was administered to 941 Korean married women and their husbands who have one or more children in Pusan. The results indicated that: 1. The overal and most sub dimensional LQ of Korean married women mark medium level and were lower than that of Korean married men's. Korean married women who is highly educated, keeps efficient communication with their husband, self-esteem, sense of internal control, social belongingness, and positive emotion, and possess high SES and much available resources shows higher LQ than those who doesn't. 2. The efficient communication with husband and available resources have direct and indirect influences on Korean married women's LQ. The psychological mediatory factors of these two variables' influences on women's LQ are such as social belongingness, positive emotion, self-esteem and sense of intemal control. SES has direct influence only and the educational level has indirect influence via social belongingness only on Korean married women's LQ. All these factors explain 58% of Korean married women's LQ variance. 3. Korean married women rank family health, family reconciliation, husband's success, and children's achievement as the very important factors in life. They also rank husbands success, economic abundant, family reconciliation, family health, and their self-actualization as the very required factors for enhancing the given LQ.
This paper aims to investigate changes in Korean family structures by reflecting on the perception of traditional family rites and family systems. In-depth interviews were conducted with 17 married middle-aged men (9) and women (8) who had at least one child. Findings were as follows: First, both married middle aged men and women internalized Confucianism. They thought that the head of household, who was male as far as possible, was needed for the formation of a normal family. In addition, both of married middle-aged men and women recognized married women as outsiders based on Chul-ga-we-in-sa-sang. And they put parents-children relationships ahead of couple relationships and supported Jang-ja-woo-dae-sang-sok (privileging the eldest son over the other children in terms of the distribution of family resources and inheritance based on Confucianism). However, there were some differences to support the use of Hang-ryul-ja, which is based on expressing the character of generation by sharing the first name, and the importance of Jok-bo. which is based on traditional family genealogical records. Second, even though women internalized Confucianism, they did not attach traditional meanings to memorial services for ancestors to the extent that men did and defined family members as a procreation family boundaries unlike men, who defined family boundary as original family members and procreation family members. In conclusion, even though family laws and culture have evolved from the patrilineal family system to one which promotes gender equality, married men and women internalize Confucianism. Instead, some transformations are evident from the perspective of females in terms of memorial services for ancestors and family boundaries.
There is a widespread concern that women's increasing involvement in dual role (job plus family role) may harm their physical health. Longevity of women is longer than that of men. By contrast, prevalence rate is higher in women than men, and No. of prevalence days, No. of days in bed and No. of days with treatment are more in women. Generally, women live longer, but women are worse in health status than men. Rate of labor participation in women is increasing gradually in Korea. This study presents an analysis of the relationships between employment. marital status and health for both Korean women and men to examine how women's increasing involvements in dual role affect their physical health. The data used in this analysis were collected by The National Statistical Office in the spring of 1992. Households, which were sampled by using a three-stage stratified cluster sampling method, were interviewed. Response rate was 99.43%. Of these, student or widowed or divorced people were excluded. 47,552 women and men aged 21-50 were available for the analysis. Health status was measured by self-assessed health status (1=excellent, 5=poor), No. of prevalent days, No. of days with treatment, and No. of days in bed in two previous weeks. And control variables are age, and education. Research findings are as follows : 1. Men have better self-rated health, fewer prevalent days, fewer days in bed, and fewer days with treatment than women. 2. The employed are more healthier than the non-employed. 3. Unmarried people are more healthier than married people. 4. Interaction effects of sex, marital status, employment are significant. This finding shows that effects of empolyment, marital status on health status is not same for women and men. 5. For male, employed people are more healthier than non-employed people. Unmarried people are more healthier than married people. This differences are significant. For female, The employed are more healthier than the non-employed. However, no differences are noticed between the married and the unmarried in health status. In conclusion, there is no evidence that women's involvements in dual role affect their physical health negatively.
One of the major health problems of working women is job stress according to many studies. However, existing job stress questionnaires are suitable for men and men's job environments only, and do not reflect emotional labor for sales people. The aim of this research is to find women's job stress factors. The subjects of this investigation are married working women in sales since they experience emotional labor in addition to physical and psychological labor and the work-family conflict is very important job stressor for them. The job stressor of married sales women was analyzed through qualitative research. After I had in-depth interviews with 20 married sales women, I identified 49 new concepts, 3 main categories and 17 sub categories. The results are like the following. 1. 3 main categories are job factor, aggravate factor, and compensate factor. 2. Job factor has 5 sub-categories including 'increasing of selling', 'emotional labor' and 'physical burden'. 3. Aggrabate factor has 6 sub-categories including 'work/family conflict', 'relationship with higher office' and 'relationship with a fellow worker' 4. Compensate factor has 6 sub-categories including 'opportunity of employment', 'discrimination', and 'prestige' Consequently this study newly found some major job stressors for married working women in sales department.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of married middle-aged men and women's gender-role identity, marital conflicts and psychological adjustment. Psychological adjustment was composed of mid life crisis, depression, and perceived happiness. The data of the study were collected from 397 married, middle aged men and women from 40 years to 59 years-old by using self-administered questionnaire method. The results showed that gender role identity was different according to sex. In addition, women's perceived level of marital conflict was found to be significantly different according to their gender role identity, indicating that androgynous women reported the lowest level of marital conflict. However, men's gender role conflict was not related to their marital conflict. Furthermore, men's psychological adjustment level was not different according to their gender role identity, while women's psychological adjustment differed, indicating that androgynous women reported the lowest level of psychological adjustment and the undifferentiated women the highest level of psychological adjustment. Finally, the result indicated that for both men and men, marital conflict were positively correlated with mid-crisis and depression, and negatively related with happiness.
The purpose of this study is to propose measures for social work practice to enhance the happiness of middle-aged married men and women by identifying the effects of family stress and social support resources (formal and informal support resources) on marital satisfaction among mid-life married couples. Subjects were selected through purposive sampling among married men and women aged between 40 and 59 and living in Seoul City and Gyeonggi province. The study results are follows. First, the average score of family stress was 3.06 points (SD=.56), slightly higher than the median value of 3 points. Of all subscales of family stress, the subjects experienced the most stress from family relationships, followed by financial problems, health and loss of families, and work-family compatibility. In regard to social support resources, the mean value of all social support resources categories was greater than the median. Among the subscales, informal support (family support and support from other people) was found to be higher than formal support. The level of marital satisfaction was higher than the median, and the score was 3.21 points (SD=.78). Second, in order to explore differences in marital satisfaction according to family stress and social support, differences in marital satisfaction were analyzed by grouping subjects who scored high, middle, and low levels of marital satisfaction. According to the results, marital satisfaction was statistically significantly higher in the group that experienced less family stress (F=6.25, p<.01). With respect to social support, marital satisfaction was statistically significantly higher in the group that received high social support (F=29.68, p<.001). Third, according to the analysis of factors affecting marital satisfaction in middle-aged married men and women, subjective economic status, family relationship stress, economic stress, and family support showed statistical significance. The higher the subjective economic status and the lower the family relationship stress and economic stress levels, the higher the marital satisfaction among middle-aged married men and women. In addition, the greater the family support, the higher the marital satisfaction. The results of this study underscore the need to improve family relationships in middle-aged married couples and to distribute family life education programs that can strengthen family support resources. For example, family relationship enhancement programs are currently performed, including "Family School for Middle-Aged Baby Boomers" and others as part of the Healthy Family Support Work regarding the promotion of marital satisfaction of middle-aged couples. In addition, continuing effort is warranted to include content on strengthening family support resources, maximizing the effectiveness of programs, and promoting service accessibility.
The purpose of this study was to examine the recognition of the "Healthy Family Act" as it relates to family strength and to examine the influences of objective and subjective variables in relation to the "Healthy Family Act" and family strength. The subjects of this study were 339 married men and women that were interviewed using a questionnaire. The data was analyzed using the SPSS/PC+ program for the frequency, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and $X^2$ test. The major results of this study were as follows. The score for family strength by married men and women was relatively high. Variables that affected family strength were gender, academic career, region, mental health, physical health and life level. Variables that partially affected the recognition of the "Healthy Family Act" were gender, academic career, and region. Partial recognition of the "Healthy Family Act" was also affected by family strength. As well, the Government Support Program and Living Cultures Support Program were affected by family strength.
본 연구는 기혼남녀의 용서수준과 결혼만족의 관계에서 긍정적 의사소통이 어떠한 요인으로 작용하는지를 규명하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위하여 기혼남녀의 용서가 긍정적 의사소통을 매개로 결혼만족에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 분석을 위해 총 300명의 기혼남녀들에게 Rye 용서수준 척도, 긍정적 의사소통 척도, 결혼만족도 척도로 구성된 설문지를 실시하였고, 이를 통해 수집된 자료에 대하여 구조방정식 모형을 통한 분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과 첫째, 기혼남녀의 용서수준과 긍정적 의사소통, 긍정적 의사소통과 결혼만족도, 용서수준과 결혼만족도간에 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 기혼남녀의 용서는 긍정적 의사소통을 완전매개로 결혼만족에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 기혼남녀의 용서수준이 높아지면 긍정적 의사소통이 증가하고, 이를 매개로 결혼만족도가 높아질 수 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 시사점과 제한점 및 추후 연구를 위한 제언을 하였다.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between sex-role attitudes and marital family role structures. Research was conducted from May, 1989 in Seoul on 265 persons who are married. The statistical procedures used were frequncy, percentile, ony-way ANOVA, DMR, T-test, x2-test, and Pearson product correlation. The results are as follows: 1) The married men have more traditional sex-role attitudes than the married women. Their sex-role attitudes were influenced by the personal environmental variables such as age, husband's and wife's educational levels, family monthly income, family life cycle, marriage pattern, and child number. 2) The tendency of marital family role performances has no significant differences between the married men and women. Their marital family roles were influenced by the personal environmental variables such as husband's and wife's educational levels, wife's employment status, family monthly income, marriage pattern, and child numbe . 3) There is significant correlation between sex-role attitudes and marital family roles on the married men; When their sex-role attitudes are more modern pattern the structures of marital family roles are jointed. 4) There is no significant correlation between sex-role attitudes and marital family roles on the married women.
This article aims to investigate the perceptions of mistreatment of elderly among the married men and women. The subjects of this study are 291 married men and women. The major finding is that the increased stress of caregiver may lead to elder abuse of neglect. According to the above finding, it may be appropriate to offer various assistance to the suspected abuser. That is, education, couseling and social support services may help alleviate the caregiving stress contributing to the mistreatment.
