  • An inertia redistribution technique for liberalizing and reducing the complexity of manipulator dynamics with a parallel drive mechanism is presented in this paper. The dynamic design method is based on eliminating nonlinear terms, such as Coriolis, centrifugal and gravity torque in the kinetic and the potential energy of a manipulator. A set of design criteria regarding the inertia properties of links is derived. The resulting manipulator dynamics can be greatly simplified for each robot. This paper particularly presents that it is possible to completely linearize the manipulator dynamics with a parallel drive mechanism.

  • A multi d.o.f robotic manipulator is considered for multi-axis vibration control of a slender structure, using the concept of the flow source based vibration control. In order not to cause the motion saturation of the manipulator system, a hybrid dynamics associated with the flexible and desired manipulator error dynamics is also modeled as the control object. It is numerically shown that the flexible vibrations and the base motions of a test structure can be effectively controlled with the proposed hybrid dynamics.

  • To coordinate the robot manipulator along the desired trajectory, the exact model of the dynamics is required. The added mass and added moment of inertia, buoyancy, drag force, and friction mainly affect the dynamics of the undersea robot manipulator, and they are quite complex and unknown. In this reason. the exact model of the undersea robot manipulator is difficult to obtain. In this paper, instead of having efforts to get the exact model of the robot dynamics, a control-based approach was performed. We modeled the dynamics of the undersea robot manipulator whose parameters are unknown, and then applied a proposed direct adaptive and robust control, which is different from previous studies. The unknown added mass, and added moment of inertia, drag force and friction are estimated by the direct adaptive control scheme, and the drag force which is dominant disturbance is compensated by the robust control. Also, stability of the proposed control scheme is analyzed.

  • In this paper, the general problem of impedance control for a robotic manipulator with a moving flexible base is addressed. Impedance control imposes a relation between force and displacement at the contact point with the environment. The concept of impedance control of flexible base mobile manipulator is rather new and is being considered for first time using singular perturbation and new sliding mode control methods by authors. Initially slow and fast dynamics of robot are decoupled using singular perturbation method. Slow dynamics represents the dynamics of the manipulator with rigid base. Fast dynamics is the equivalent effect of the flexibility in the base. Then, using sliding mode control method, an impedance control law is derived for the slow dynamics. The asymptotic stability of the overall system is guaranteed using a combined control law comprising the impedance control law and a feedback control law for the fast dynamics. As first time, base flexibility was analyzed accurately in this paper for flexible base moving manipulator (FBMM). General dynamic decoupling, whole system stability guarantee and new composed robust control method were proposed. This proposed Sliding Mode Impedance Control Method (SMIC) was simulated for two FBMM models. First model is a simple FBMM composed of a 2 DOFs planar manipulator and a single DOF moving base with flexibility in between. Second FBMM model is a complete advanced 10 DOF FBMM composed of a 4 DOF manipulator and a 6 DOF moving base with flexibility. This controller provides desired position/force control accurately with satisfactory damped vibrations especially at the point of contact. This is the first time that SMIC was addressed for FBMM.

  • The authors investigate influences of manipulator dynamics on and roles of kinesthetic sensation and visual sensation in a Human-Machine Cooperative System (HMCS). At first, the general structure and essential transfer functions of HMCSs are described based on the previous work. Then, after showing theoretical treatment of manipulator dynamics, this paper analyzes the influences on HMCSs in two cases: one is the control design focusing on tool dynamics and reaction force transfer function, and the other is that specifies maneuver transfer function and transfer function for object dynamics variation. In addition to conventional experiments only employing kinesthetic sensation, other experiments with both kinesthetic and visual sensations are performed to examine difference in the roles of these sensations and the validity of the design without the visual sensation.

  • Using the design parameters of multi-joint manipulator, worspace of the manipulator were evaluated analytically, and the relation between such design parameters and nonlinearity of the manipulator were presented dynamically. The ratio of the volumes of a manipulator's workspace to the cube of its total link length presents a kinematic performance index [NVI] for the manipullator. It is possible to geometrically represent the manipulator dynamics with the generalized inertia ellipsoid (GIE). The relation between the GIE configuration and the characteristics of manipulator dynamics was analysed in terms of inertia and nonlinear forces (Coliolis and centrifugal forces). The nonlinearity caused by the change of the GIE configuration were affected by the difference between the major and minor axes length of the GIE. The results of this investigationare applied to the optimal design of the manipulator.

  • In this paper, the dynamics of a novel 2-DOF planar Translational Parallel Manipulator (TPM) is analyzed. The suggested TPM is made up of two PPa (Prismatic-planar Parallelogram) legs. Since all the linear actuators are mounted on the base, the proposed TPM can be applied for high speed positioning applications. The Lagrangian equations of the first type is employed to derive the inverse dynamic equations. It is shown that the analytical inverse dynamics equations match very well with ADAMS simulations. These analytical inverse dynamics equations will be used for the real-time computed torque control in the further work.

  • A method is proposed to obtain the Jacobian matrix of the 5 -bar parallel manipulator by employing the orthogonality between position and velocity vectors of rotating rigid-body around a fixed point. The dynamics of the 5-bar parallel manipulator is analyzed and utilized to design the computed-torque controller by developing a transformation matrix of the passive joints with respect to the active ones. In experimental demonstration, it shows that high-speed and accuracy tasks are performed by the proposed computed-torque control.

  • A Hybrid technique is introduced in this paper for a manipulator with 2 DOF flexible links. The manipulator dynamics plus the actuator dynamics is controlled by taking force feedback for the end-effector of the link 2 while controlling the position of link I to control the position of the end-effector.

  • This paper describes an analysis of an architecture and control system of a firefighting cannon manipulator (FCM) composed of two joint axes and one water-shooting actuator. Because the orienting FCM motion is disturbed by the reaction force from water shooting, the water shooting force has been modeled for robust control. The dynamics model of the manipulator has been set up including the external force of water-shooting reaction on the manipulator. A PD Controller and Sliding Mode Controller have been designed and their performance been tested through simulation to track a desired trajectory under the disturbance of a water-shooting reaction. The simulation shows that the performance of the Sliding Mode Controller is better than that of the PD controller.
