  • This paper studies a class of in-parallel manipulators with special geometry where the forward displacement analysis problem can be solved easier than the fully parallel manipulators. Three horizontal links of this mechanism provide 3DOFs(Degrees of Freedom), which are one degree of orientational freedom and two degrees of translatory freedom. Three vertical links of this mechanism provide 3DOFs, which are two degrees of orientational freedom and one degree of translatory freedom. The main advantages of this manipulator, compared with the Stewart platform type, are the capability to produce pure rotation and to predict the motion of the moving platform easily. Since this manipulator has simple kinematic characteristics compared with the Stewart platform, controlling in real-time is possible due to less computational burden. The purpose of this investigation is to develope an analytical method and systematic method to analyze the basic kinematics of the manipulator. The basic kinematic equations of the manipulator are derived and simulation is carried out to show the performance of the mechanism.

  • A method to evaluate the position performance for a stochastically defined planar robot manipulator is presented. Performance is defined as the operational reliability based upon the positional errors of the manipulator tip. An analytical method is developed and applied to a two-link robot manipulator through forward kinematics. This study includes uncertainties in the link length, pin center location and radial clearance. By virtue of the effective link length model, only the nominal manipulator model and statistical information on the uncertainties are required. The results from the analytical method is compared to those from the Monte Carlo simulation.

  • An error analysis is very important for a precision machine to estimate its performances. This study proposes a new parallel device. cubic parallel manipulator. There are so many error sources in this mechanism. Errors of the proposed cubic parallel vary with the stiffness of the manipulator. The stiffness of each leg depends on the direction of the actuation force and its direction. In this paper, the stiffness of the manipulator is calculated and the position errors and the orientation errors are predicted with the platform moving. The analysis shows that the method can be used in predicting the accuracy of other parallel devices and in designing a parallel manipulator.

  • Singular points are those at which the determinant of a Jacobian matrix is zero. A parallel manipulator gains mostly an extra DOF at the singular points, where it can not be properly controlled. In this study, singular points of a cubic parallel manipulator are illustrated by obtaining the determinant of a Jacobian matrix mathematically, and the singular points of the manipulator are found to be three separate planes in a 3D space. The dependency among links for each singular point is determined by applying linear algebra. Also, the singular points and workspace of the cubic parallel manipulator are plotted to check if the workspace contain singular points.

  • A manipulator system that needs significantly large workspace volume and high payload capacity has greater link flexibility than typical industrial robots and teleoperators. If link flexibility is significant, position control of the manipulator's end-effector exhibits the nonminimum phase, noncollocated, and flexible structure system control problems. This paper addresses inverse dynamic trajectory planning issues of a flexible manipulator. The inverse dynamic equation of a flexible manipulator was solved in the time domain. By dividing the inverse system equation into the causal part and the anticausal part, the inverse dynamic method calculates the feedforward torque and the trajectories of all state variables that do not excite structural vibrations for a given end-point trajectory. Through simulation and experiment with a single-Unk flexible manipulator, the effectiveness of the inverse dynamic method has been demonstrated.

  • Parallel link manipulators have an ability of more precise positioning than serial open-loop manipulators. However. general parallel link manipulators have been restricted to the real applications since they have limited workspace due to interference among actuators. In this study, we suggest a closed-loop manipulator with 6 degrees-of-freedom and with enlarged workspace. It consists of two parts for minimizing the interference among actuators. One part is lower structure with planar 3 degrees-of-freedom and the other is upper one with spatial 3 degrees-of-freedom. Forward kinematics and inverse kinematics are solved, research about singularity points are carried out and workspace is evaluated. The comparison of workspace between Stewart platform, which is the typical parallel link manipulator, and the suggested manipulator shows that the workspace of the latter is wider than that of the former. Especially, simulation results also show that the suggested manipulator is more suitable when there needs rotation in the end-effector.

  • In general, the control of robot manipulator is classified into position control and force control. Position controllers give adequate performance when a manipulator is following a trajectory through space and end-effector has no contact with environment. However for most tasks performed by robot manipulator in industry, contact is made between the end-effector and manipulator's environment, so position control may not suffice. The objective of this study is to control both position of a manipulator and the contact forces generated at the hand by using a conceptually simple control law. Position and force control problem is decoupled into subtasts via taskspace formulation and inverse dynamics. Then, the position controllers are designed for the task space variable which represent tangent motion and the forte controllers are designed for the lash space variables which represent normal force.

  • The bending test of an individual ZnO nanorod was performed with a nano-manipulator and a force sensor inside the scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the bending properties of ZnO nanorod were also discussed. The ZnO nanorod used in this experiment was fabricated by means of solution base process. The force sensor used for bending test of ZnO nanorod was typed with cantilever. The force sensor was mounted on the nano-manipulator. The nano-manipulator was controlled and manipulated by a personal computer. The each end of an individual ZnO nanorod was attached on the rigid support and the tip of the force sensor with an electron beam exposure, and then the bending test was carried out by controlling of the nano-manipulator. The bending modulus of a ZnO nanorod was calculated at 69.35GPa after the bending test.

  • A hybrid control method based on the relative motion between a manipulator and a workpiece is described for a two-dimensional manipulator, in which it is assumed that there are no collisions between the robot manipulator and the workpiece, and that we use a computed force law which is similar to the computed torque law in the trajectory tracking problem of a robot manipulator. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid control method is illustrated through several simulations.

  • In this paper, a novel vibration control scheme for a single-link flexible manipulator system without using a vibration feedback sensor is proposed. In order to achieve the vibration information of the flexible link, a reaction moment estimator based on the dynamic characteristics of the flexible manipulator is proposed. While the manipulator is maneuvering the reaction moment is reciprocally acting on the flexible link and the hub inertia due to the vibration of the link. A sliding mode controller based on the equivalent rigid body dynamics corresponding to the proposed flexible manipulator is then augmented with the reaction moment estimator to realize a decentralized control system. The reaction moment estimator is implemented via the first order low pass filter. The performance of the proposed control scheme is verified by computer simulation and experiment.
