  • The application of computer software into the linguistic analysis of texts proves useful to arrive at concise and authentic results from large data texts. Based on this assumption, this paper employs a Computer-Aided Text Analysis (CATA) and a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to explore the manipulative strategies of positive/negative presentation in Orwell's Animal Farm. More specifically, the paper attempts to explore the extent to which CATA software represented by the three variables of Frequency Distribution Analysis (FDA), Content Analysis (CA), and Key Word in Context (KWIC) incorporate with CDA decipher the manipulative purposes beyond positive presentation of selfness and negative presentation of otherness in the selected corpus. The analysis covers some CDA strategies, including justification, false statistics, and competency, for positive self-presentation; and accusation, criticism, and the use of ambiguous words for negative other-presentation. With the application of CATA, some words will be analyzed by showing their frequency distribution analysis as well as their contextual environment in the selected text to expose the extent to which they are employed as strategies of positive/negative presentation in the text under investigation. Findings show that CATA software contributes significantly to the linguistic analysis of large data texts. The paper recommends the use and application of the different CATA software in the stylistic and corpus linguistics studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the proper methods of presenting question materials for generate of various question by comparing type, level, objectivity, manipulation of question in the presenting methods of question phenomena. I selected and showed actual objects, movies, and photographs as ways of presenting question materials, to each of which three question tasks were assigned. The generated questions by students were compared. The results showed that the question of conjectural, predictive, methodological, exploratory, verificational, qualitative, quantitative, simple-manipulative, pre-manipulative questions turned out to have significantly higher average frequencies in the cases of the presentation of photographs and movies than in the cases of the presentation of actual objects. However, the question of post-manipulative questions turned out to have significantly higher average frequencies in the cases of the presentation of actual objects than in the cases of the presentation of photographs and movies. and There were no significant differences between individual methods of question task presentation in average frequencies with respect to causal and methodological, subjective questions. Thus, we have learned from this that methods of presenting question phenomena had influence on the students' question. This suggests that we should consider forms of presentation of question materials in planning the teaching-learning of question.

  • Formal manipulations of double series are useful in getting some other identities from given ones and evaluating certain summations, involving double series. The main object of this note is to summarize rather useful double series manipulations scattered in the literature and give their generalized formulas, for convenience and easier reference in their future use. An application of such manipulations to an evaluation for Euler sums (in itself, interesting), among other things, will also be presented to show usefulness of such manipulative techniques.

  • Objective: This study aims to find suitable types and styles for gesture interaction as remote control on smart TVs. Background: Smart TV is being developed rapidly in the world, and gesture interaction has a wide range of research areas, especially based on vision techniques. However, most studies are focused on the gesture recognition technology. Also, not many previous studies of gestures types and styles on smart TVs were carried out. Therefore, it is necessary to check what users prefer in terms of gesture types and styles for each operation command. Method: We conducted an experiment to extract the target user manipulation commands required for smart TVs and select the corresponding gestures. To do this, we looked at gesture styles people use for every operation command, and checked whether there are any gesture styles they prefer over others. Through these results, this study was carried out with a process selecting smart TV operation commands and gestures. Results: Eighteen TV commands have been used in this study. With agreement level as a basis, we compared the six types of gestures and five styles of gestures for each command. As for gesture type, participants generally preferred a gesture of Path-Moving type. In the case of Pan and Scroll commands, the highest agreement level (1.00) of 18 commands was shown. As for gesture styles, the participants preferred a manipulative style in 11 commands (Next, Previous, Volume up, Volume down, Play, Stop, Zoom in, Zoom out, Pan, Rotate, Scroll). Conclusion: By conducting an analysis on user-preferred gestures, nine gesture commands are proposed for gesture control on smart TVs. Most participants preferred Path-Moving type and Manipulative style gestures based on the actual operations. Application: The results can be applied to a more advanced form of the gestures in the 3D environment, such as a study on VR. The method used in this study will be utilized in various domains.

  • Hypothesis is defined as a single proposition proposed as a possible explanation for the occurrence of some observed phenomena. The purpose of this study was to analyze and categorize hypotheses generated by students on the cause of difference between the structures of muscles of the fishes and the terrestrial animals. A hypothesis-generating test was administered to 23 three college students who were majoring in science education. The study showed that college students generated manipulative and theoretical hypotheses as proposed explanations for the structural difference between muscles of the fishes and the terrestrial animals. Furthermore, students generated several hypotheses which were categorized by the quality of abductive process based on the degree of likeness between experienced knowledge and current phenomena. This study also discusses the implications of these findings for teaching and research in science education.

  • Objectives : This study was purposed to investigate the possibility of traction therapy as treatment method of scoliosis, of which occurrence rate was increasing with teenagers in Korea. Methods : 63 literatures, history, classification, and effectiveness of traction therapy were reviewed and the occurrences rate of scoliosis with teenagers in Korea was investigated. Results : Traction therapy as a treatment method on scoliosis, was originally developed by Hippocrates(460~385 BC), based on the historical record. Traction therapy is classified according to the tools engaged, the postures, the traction methods, and the areas for traction. The opinions on the effect of traction as treatment method were different depending on whether it is in Korea or outside of the country. Within the country, 75% of reports were positive on the effects of traction therapy, while outside of the country, about 74% of reports were negative. On the other hand, the occurrence rates of scoliosis with teenagers in Korea were increasing from 1.46%(1977) to 11.08%(2008). Conclusions : Unfortunately the effects of traction therapy on scoliosis were unclear but it seems to be different in the effects of manipulative therapy and mechanical or apparatus traction therapy. Systematic studies on traction therapy are needed, because of the increasing rate of scoliosis in Korea with teenagers.

  • The study was to develop the instruments including instructional materials and test items for enhancing spatial ability. A mixed methodology was chosen to achieve the purpose of the study. To find students' achievement, 5 units of instructional materials were developed through the qualitative method and test items were tested through the quantitative method with 152 of the 8th-graders. The strategies to develop the instructional materials were: firstly to focus on mathematics properties for developing spacial ability; secondly, to allow students to follow hierarchical procedure o[ mathematical properties from 2-d to 3-d; thirdly, to recognize what the manipulative can do and can not; and fourthly, to guide students tn develop the process oriented thought, not the result oriented thought. For the test, 25 items were analyzed to assess students' achievement using validity, difficulty, and discriminator.
