Studies have been conducted for the purpose of using manganese nodule and residue remained after extracting valuable metals [mm it as the adsorbent of cadmium wastewater. The study observed the adsorption percentage according to initial cadmium concentration and interpreted each adsorption systems by applying the Freundlich, Langmuir, and Temkin isotherms. The adsorption amounts increased as the initial concentration at cadmium ion increased, whereas the adsorption percentage decreased. Linearity was shown when applied to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. The k value which evaluates the adsorption capacity of adsorbent in Freundlich isotherm, turned out to be 11.72, the highest in case of manganese nodule. The Xm value, the maximum adsorption amount of the adsorbate that adsorbs as a monolayer in Langmuir isotherm of manganese nodule, was estimated as 0.16, representing higher value compared with those of leached residue, leached residue-raw manganese nodule mixture, and activated carbon.
Ammonia nitrogen is well known as a substance that causes the eutrophication with a phosphorus in the water, because it is contained in the industrial wastewater, agricultural and the stockbreeding wastewater. In addition, manganese (Mn) and arsenic (As) are included in the mine treated water, etc., and are known as a source of water pollution. Natural zeolites are used to remove ammonia nitrogen in water but it have a low adsorption capacity. In order to improve the low adsorption capacity of the natural zeolite, ion substitution was carried out with $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$. The adsorption capacity and removal rate of ammonia nitrogen ($NH_4-N$) were the highest at 0.66 mg/g and 89.8% in $Na^+$ ion exchanged zeolite. Adsorption experiments of Mn and As were performed using ion exchanged zeolites. Ion exchanged zeolite with $Mg^{2+}$ showed high adsorption capacity and removal rates of Mn and As.
Effects of operating parameters on the breakthrough properties of Pb(II) by $Mn_3O_4$ coated activated carbon prepared by supercritical technique were investigated through fixed-bed column experiments. The mass transfer zone and equilibrium adsorption capacity were enhanced about 2.8 times for Pb(II) by $Mn_3O_4$ coating onto activated carbon. Increase of bed height enhanced the residence time of Pb(II) in adsorption zone, giving the higher breakthrough time, mass transfer zone and equilibrium adsorption capacity. Increase of flow rate reduced the residence time and diffusion of Pb(II) in adsorption zone, therefore decreased the equilibrium adsorption capacity. The higher inlet concentration of Pb(II) decreased the breakthrough time and mass transfer zone through the promotion of Pb(II) transfer onto adsorbent.
Continuous column adsorption experiments have been conducted fur artificial and actual wastewater which containing $Ni^{2+}$ by using manganese nodule as an adsorbent for the purpose of wastewater treatment along with an increased $Ni^{2+}$ recovery in the refining of manganese nodule. The adsorption features of $Ni^{2+}$ artificial wastewater were examined by taking the height of fixed bed, influent flow rate, and the initial concentration of adsorbate as the influential parameters. The adsorption capacity of manganese nodule and the rate constant for $Ni^{2+}$ adsorption were estimated employing Bohart-Adams equation. In addition, the variation of the adsorbed amount of adsorbate for each column according to the influent flow rate and the initial concentration of adsorbate was investigated based on the breakthrough curves fur each column. For serially connected columns, the adsorbed amount of $Ni^{2+}$ for each column was observed to increase gradually as the adsorption proceeded from the initial column to the final column. The variation of the breakthrough curve for actual wastewater with the height of fixed bed was not so significant as that for artificial wastewater, which was considered to be due to the high concentration of $Ni^{2+}$ in actual wastewater. Regarding the effect of the particle size of manganese nodule on adsorption, the adsorbed amount of adsorbate was found to somewhat increase as the particle size became smaller.
In this study, oxidation of As (III) as well as removal of total arsenic by adsorbents coated with single oxides or multi-oxides (Fe (III), Mn (IV), Al (III)) was investigated. In addition, multi-functional properties of adsorbents coated with multi-oxides were evaluated. Finally, application of activated carbon impregnated with Fe or Mn-oxides on the treatment of As (III) or As (V) was studied. As (V) adsorption results with adsorbents containing Fe and Al shows that adsorbents containing Fe show a greater removal of As (V) at pH 4 than at pH 7. In contrast adsorbents containing Al shows a favorable removal of As (V) at pH 7 than at pH 4. In case of iron sand, it has a negligible adsorption capacity for As (V) although it contains 217.9 g-Fe/kg-adsorbent, Oxidation result shows that manganese coated sand (MCS) has the greatest As (III) oxidation capacity among all metal oxides at pH 4. Oxidation efficiency of As (III) by IMCS (iron and manganese coated sand) was less than that by MCS. However the total removed amount of arsenic by IMCS was greater than that by MCS.
In this study, PVC-LMO beads were prepared by immobilizing lithium manganese oxide (LMO) with poly vinyl chloride (PVC) diluted in dioxane solvent. XRD and SEM analysis confirmed that LMO was immobilized well in PVC-LMO beads. The diameter of PVC-LMO beads prepared by dioxane solvent was about 2 mm. The adsorption experiments of lithium ions by PVC-LMO beads were conducted batchwise. The optimum pH was pH 10. The adsorption characteristics of lithium ions by PVC-LMO beads was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir model was 24.25 mg/g. The thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$ and ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ were evaluated. The calculated ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ was between -6.16 and -4.14 kJ/mol (below zero), indicating the spontaneous nature of $Li^+$ adsorption on PVC-LMO beads. Also, the results showed that PVC-LMO beads prepared in this study could be used for the removal of lithium ions from seawater containing coexisting ions such as $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$.
In this study, PVC-LMO beads were prepared by immobilizing lithium manganese oxide (LMO) with poly vinyl chloride (PVC) diluted in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent on behalf of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). XRD analysis confirmed that LMO was immobilized well in PVC-LMO beads. The diameter of PVC-LMO beads synthesized by DMSO was about 4 mm. The adsorption experiments of lithium ions by PVC-LMO beads were conducted batchwise. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir model was 21.31 mg/g. The adsorption characteristics of lithium ions by PVC-LMO beads was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. It was considered that the internal diffusion was the rate controlling step.
Zeolite material having XRD peaks of Na-A zeolite in the 2θ range of 7.18 to 34.18 can be synthesized from the waste catalyst using a fusion/hydrothermal method. The adsorption rate of Mn ions by a commercial Na-A zeolite and the synthesized zeolitic material increased as the adsorption temperature increased in the range of 10 ~ 40℃. The adsorption of Mn ion were very rapid in the first 30 min and then reached to the equilibrium state after approximately 60 min. The adsorption kinetics of Mn ions by the commercial Na-A zeolite and the zeolitic material were found to be well fitted to the pseudo-2nd order kinetic model. Equilibrium data by the commercial Na-A zeolite and the zeolitic material fit the Langmuir, Koble-Corrigan, and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models well rather than Freundlich isotherm model. The removal capacity of the Mn ions by the commercial Na-A zeolite and the zeolitic material obtained from the Langmuir model was 135.2 mg/g and 128.9 mg/g at 30℃, respectively. The adsorption capacity of Mn ions by the synthesized zeolitic material was almost similar to that of commercial Na-A zeolite. The synthesized zeolitic material could be applied as an economically feasible commercial adsorbent.
The feasibility for the employment of manganese nodule as an adsorbent for $SO_{2}$ gas has been investigated. The specific surface area of manganese nodule particle, which used in the experiments, was ca. $221.5m^{2}/g$ and the content of sulfur in manganese nodule was observed to significantly increase after $SO_{2}$ was adsorbed on it. The EPMA for the distilled water-washed and methanol-washed manganese nodule particle after $SO_{2}$ adsorption showed that its sulfur content was slightly decreased to 14.7% and 13.1% respectively, from 15.4% before washing. The XRD analysis of manganese nodule showed that todorokite and birnessite, which are manganese oxides, and quartz and anorthite were the major mineralogical components and weak $MnSO_{4}$ peaks were detected after $SO_{2}$ was adsorbed on manganese nodule. For an comparative investigation, limestone was also tested as an adsorbent for $SO_{2}$, however, no peaks for $CaSO_{4}$ were found by XRD analysis after the adsorption of $SO_{2}$. As the size of adsorbent increased, time for breakthrough was decreased and the adsorbed amount of $SO_{2}$ was also diminished. The $SO_{2}$ adsorption was hindered when its flow rate became high and the adsorption capacity of manganese nodule was observed to be superior to that of limestone. In addition, the mixture of manganese nodule and limestone did not show an increase in the adsorption of $SO_{2}$. Finally, as the temperature was raised, the adsorbed amount of adsorbate on manganese nodule was found to be decreased.
In this paper, the wet mixing method was introduced to prepare spinel lithium manganese oxide (LMO) with $Li_2CO_3$ and $MnCO_3$. The physical properties of the resulting lithium manganese oxide were characterized by the XRD and SEM. The adsorption properties of LMO for $Li^+$ were investigated by batch methods. The maximum adsorption capacity of lithium was calculated from Langmuir isotherm and found to be 27.25 mg/g. The LMO are found to have a remarkable lithium ion-sieve property with distribution coefficients ($K_d$) in the order of $Ca^{2+}$ < $K^+$ < $Na^+$ < $Mg^{2+}$ < $Li^+$, which is promising in the lithium extraction from seawater.
