  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of Mamestra brassicae nucleopolyhedrovirus (MabrNPV)-K1 isolated in Korea. Polyhedra of MabrNPV-K1 showed irregular appearance in shape with the average diameter $1.8{\mu}m$. MabrNPV-K1 contained a number of nucleocapsids within a viral envelope embedded in polyhedron. The polyhedrin of MabrNPV-K1 was composed of single polypeptide with a M.W. of approximate 31 kDa which is identical to the commercialized MabrNPV, Mamestrin, as a biological control agent. The nucleotide and amino acid sequences within the coding region of MabrNPV-K1 polyhedrin shared 99.0% similarity with the polyhedrin gene from previous reported MabrNPVs. The median lethal concentrations ($LC_{50}$) of MabrNPV-K1 and Mamestrin to M. brassicae larvae were $3.9{\times}10^3$ PIBs/larva and $6.0{\times}10^4$ PIBs/larva, respectively. Mortality of the MabrNPV-K1 against to the third instars larvae was 15 times higher than that of the Mamestrin. The median lethal times ($LT_{50})$ of MabrNPV-K1 by the concentration of polyhedra were lower ($4.4{\sim}6.1$ days) than those of Mamestrin ($4.1{\sim}8.6$ days). These results suggest that a local strain MabrNPV-K1 has high pathogenicity to M. brassicae and may be useful for the development of biological control agent to control this.

  • In order to preserve the soundness of agro-ecosystem and products safety in agriculture, this study was evaluated environmental impact in relation to the INM (Integrated Nutrient Management) and IPM (Integrated Pest Management) at paddy fields at Ok-Chun and Yang-Pyung region. By introduction of INM with the application of BB(bulk-blanded) fertilizer based on soil analysis and IPM, the application rate of fertilizer was reduced to about $28.6{\sim}39.4%$ and the yield of brown rice was increased to about $3{\sim}10%$ compared to conventional practices. The concentrations of COD, $NH_4-N$, and $NO_3-N$ in irrigation water flowed to the environmental-friendly agriculture practices were 15.0, 0.67, and 1.39 mg/L, respectively. The concentrations of COD, $NH_4-N$, and $NO_3-N$ from paddy fields in drainage water were 12.4, 0.29, and 2.42 mg/L, respectively. The total number of the freshwater invertebrates was higher in field treated with fertilization by prescription with soil testing. Also, the population density of aquatic insects was higher than the other fields at both demonstration villages. In conclusion, it was possible to reduce the amount of fertilizer and agricultural chemicals application, and increase the yield of rice by application of the environmental-friendly agriculture practices.

  • Korean arboretums where a large number of people are visiting could not do visitor's satisfaction in qualitative side and communication through education and event, although a lot of those things statistically have been doing so far. At this side, it needs an arboretum's segmentation: preparing to an adaptation strategy of a new paradigm, differentiated strategy, and problem solving strategy tied by a similar group for the Korean arboretum visitors. This research tries to classify several patterns with Korean arboretums by visitor's behavior and propose each type of subspecialized management plan after analyzing characteristic of supply and demand. The research for this tries to classify several patterns of Korean arboretum and suggest segmentalzed management plan by types after analyzing characteristics of aspects of demand and supply. By looking at the main patterning result of arboretum as a standard of the demand, there were four sorts of arboretums. In the first, it is the arboretum of intermediate type: not a clear characteristic. In the second, it is an arboretum of multipurpose resort type: strongly demanding motivational factors of a rest, health, access, low cost, experience, learning and sightseeing. In the third, it is an arboretum of theme tour type: a strong sightseeing motivational factor and demanding appreciate scenery. In the last, it is an arboretum of studying and admiring type: demanding a motivational factor of sightseeing landscape and plants, a strong experience and learning.

  • BACKGROUND: Through Saemangeum development project, 283 ㎢ of new land is planned to be created and the reclaimed land of 89.7 ㎢ will be used as agricultural land. Therefore, monitoring of soil salinity is required to evaluate the suitability of the land for agricultural purposes. METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated changes of soil physico-chemical properties, including electric conductivity (EC), of the Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land (1,195 ha) from 2008 to 2017 to obtain basic data for suitable soil management of the Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land. Soil samples were collected from the sites spaced 200 meters apart from each other. Soil analysis results showed that average soil EC was 14.5 dS m-1 in 2008, and decreased to 6.5 dS m-1 in 2014 and to 0.9 dS m-1 in 2017. Accordingly, the soil area below soil EC 4.7 dS m-1 (accepted as farmable soil salinity) increased; 25.0% in 2008, 54.3% in 2014, and 96.9% in 2017. The annual decrease in soil EC was described as y = -1.5756x + 14.6 (R2= 0.96), where y = soil EC and x = elapsed years since 2008. CONCLUSION: The soil salinity have decreased to a level for cultivation of most edible crops. However, since the soil chemical properties, such as soil organic matter were inadequate for the cultivation of crops, it was suggested that management of soil fertility would be important for efficient agricultural use of Saemangeum reclaimed land.
