The Development of High School Instructional Program for Increasing Creative Thinking Abilities: Focused on Building a Scale Model of the Solar System (창의적 사고 계발을 위한 고등학교 학습 프로그램 개발: 태양계 축소 모형을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop instructional programs for 10th graders to facilitate their creative thinking abilities and understanding concerning the scale of the Solar System. The programs were based on four major themes and composed of eight lessons which dealt with the relative scale of the Solar System. The programs were applied to 155 students at G high school in Gumi City. The results showed that the programs were helpful to students in that they facilitated easier understanding of the relative sizes of planets within the solar system as well as creative thinking abilities including divergent thinking and convergent thinking.

Major satisfaction and career decision level of students in dept. of Home Economics Education (가정교육과 학생들의 학과만족도와 진로결정수준)

  • The purposes of this study were to examine major satisfaction and career decision level of Home Economics Education major college students, to investigate factors influencing on major satisfaction and career decision level, and to provide basic informations for career counseling. A survey was conducted to students majoring Home Economics Education at four universities, and students majoring Korean Language Education and Mathematics Education at one same university in Seoul from October to November, 2011. General satisfaction in major of Home Economics Edu. students was above average, but social perception satisfaction was low. The social perception satisfaction was lower for Home Economics edu. students than Korean Language edu. and Mathematics edu. students. There were significant differences in major satisfaction by university and class standing, but no significant difference by gender. Students showed the lowest value in Home Economics teacher as considering job, and most of students considered teacher and major unconcerned job. Students considering major concerned job showed higher major satisfaction compared to students considering major unconcerned job. Career decision level was medium and there were not significant differences in career decision level by major, university, class standing, gender, considering job. Career decision level was affected positively by only general satisfaction in major.

A Study on the Scientific Inquiry Competencies of First-Year Science Major Students at a College of Education: Focusing on the General Chemistry Experiment Course (사범대학교 과학계열 신입생들의 과학 탐구 역량 조사 : 일반화학 실험 수행을 중심으로)

  • This study aimed to investigate whether pre-service science major students at a college of education possess the inquiry competencies necessary to conduct a general chemistry laboratory class. For this purpose, a survey of students' experiences in school science, an assessment of knowledge of laboratory equipment, an assessment of science inquiry processes, and an assessment of chemistry experiment design skills were conducted. The results indicated that science education major students had insufficient understanding of the names and uses of chemical experiment tools, and they did not adequately perform the investigation processes required for the intended experiments. Additionally, it was shown that science education major students had inadequate inquiry competencies needed to conduct general chemistry experiments at the university level, such as insufficient chemistry experiment design skills.

  • Writing education for the students who major in natural sciences and engineering is concentrated on just writing in liberal education. So, this article study the condition and practical solution of writing education with a focus on natural sciences and engineering. This article researches the condition of writing in these majors of Seoul National University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. As a result, students keenly feel the necessity of writing in this major, but SNU does not offer such courses and few teachers that could teach it. To solve this, we propose that writing teachers of liberal education give feedback on the reports of the capstone research subject 3 or 4 times, which corresponds to 1 credit. This solution would be applicable to most universities in practice, though it is not final method.

Effectiveness analysis based on PJBL of Liberal Arts Computing (PJBL기반의 교양컴퓨터 수업의 효과성 분석)

  • Currently, many universities are implementing software-oriented universities and artificial intelligence-oriented universities to foster software-oriented manpower. We are educating students to design and produce computational thinking and coding directly with their major knowledge. However, computer education is not easy for non-majors, and there are many difficulties in coding. The results of responses from 104 students from the College of Health Sciences and College of Social Management who took the liberal arts computer at University H were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 version. In the liberal arts computer class for non-majors, a PJBL-based class plan was proposed. The effectiveness of PJBL-based classes was confirmed through a questionnaire for the improvement of artificial intelligence liberal arts courses. As a result, PJBL-based education showed statistically significant results in terms of satisfaction, effectiveness, and self-efficiency of classes regardless of major.

  • This study explored the trend of higher education policy according to the change of productive populations. This study analyzes current problem on higher education policy and suggests direction of higher education policy according to decrease in productive population, focusing on the change in productive populations and related social changes. The major directions of higher education policy are enhancing competitiveness of universities, managing university enrollment quota, and activating education - industry links. This study suggests twelve detailed - policies based on the three major directions of higher education policy.

  • Twenty-three plants of Japanese apricot (Prunus mume) were collected from several sites around Mountains JIRI in Korea. Japanese apricots having the different morphological features were evenly distributed in the groups made from the cluster analysis, indicating no geographic distributions but artificial vegetations in Korea. Japanese apricots were, as based on the PCR-RAPD techniques, clustered into the three groups; a group (prototype) having the five white petals with the five red sepals, a group (green type) having the five white petals with the five green sepals, and a group (hybrid type) having the more than five red petals with various colored sepals. The prototype apricots showed higher toxicities than other type apricot against bacteria and production of less compounds in TLC plates. The polypetal types of Japanes apricot were related to those of p. armebiaca in the characteristics of seed (the ruggedness), but also to be closed to those of p. armebiaca in PCR-RAPD analysis. The cluster analysis of the twenty three apricots and its related species calculated from the two primers were shown to distinguish relationships of cultivars within species, or of individual plants within cultivars, but also to display the two overlapping bands resulted from PCR-RAPD technique.

A Proposal of Environmental Engineering Education on the New Educational Environments (변화된 교육환경에 따른 환경공학교육의 방향설정 연구)

  • Recently, regional society requires engineers to understand the international affairs and to be global experts endowed with leadership. General education appropriate to engineers should fulfill these needs and provide wide understandings in humanity. General sciences education should be also reinforced for the students taking low level science courses under 7th education program to improve learning ability of the major subjects in college. A general education component including humanity for the engineers could be trained continuously from primary school to college under the 2009 revised education program. Various opportunity for education should be provided through the special curriculum development at the college or department level, which trains experts who fulfill the need of community. Multi-major program is a substitute for offering the educational opportunity to the students in environmental engineering, one of multidisciplinary programs. Emphasized criteria of the curriculum requirements and adequate contents of general education need be also developed for supporting the students to take advanced courses in major.

  • Software education is inevitable for the success of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and university education also requires innovation to cope with revolutionary change of the society. The number of students seeking employment in the IT field is steadily increasing regardless of the major of the student. However, the existing software-related courses offered by universities or private educational institutions are limited. This paper analyzes the existing software curriculum of several major universities for non-IT major students. In addition, in-depth surveys by students at Seoul Theological University is conducted to figure out the demand for the advanced level computer science subjects. Finally, new software education curriculum is proposed to fulfill the needs of non-IT major students and to improve the employment rate of non-IT major students seeking tech companies. The new curriculum will help to cultivate intermediate level IT experts that bridge the gap between advanced level IT experts and primitive level computer technicians.

Matriculation Motive and Environmental Awareness of Freshman in Environmental Education Department (환경교육과 신입생의 입학 동기 및 환경에 대한 인식 변화 - 한국교원대학교 신입생을 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this research is to study motivation of freshmen in Environmental Education Department for choosing their major, and their environmental awareness in overall. The subject for this research is twenty freshmen, majoring Environmental Education at Korea National University of Education in 2007, and methods of the research include survey through questionnaires, reviewing literature of the field, and conference with experts in Environmental Education. After the research, six freshmen's motivation for choosing Environmental Education as their major changed positively. Awareness of the environment in residential area changed somewhat negatively, while awareness of the nation's overall environment changed positively. Subjects' recognition for the need of Environmental Education was generally negative in both the first and second surveys whereas that of sustainable society changed more remarkably throughout the surveys. Most subject thought that the most important issue Environmental teachers should teach is proper attitudes towards and reasonable actions for the environment.
