  • A comprehensive scaling method is proposed for a scaled-down facility simulating SBLOCA in the CARR passive reactor (CP-1300). The present method consists of two stages: scaling methodology, and validation of scaling methodology and code. The present scaling methodology is based on the integral response scaling method. Through sensitivity study, the condensation of the top of the CMT is identified as one of the little-known phenomenon with high importance which should be addressed for the applicability of the code. Using the similarity of the derived scaling parameters, the major component geometries of the scaled-down facility are determined. In the case of 1/4 height and 1/100 area ratio scaling, it is found out that the power ratio is the same as the area ratio, and the present scaling methodology generates the design parameters of the scaled-down facility without any distortion.

  • The major purpose of this study was to assess the physical living environment of two dementia care facilities to provide the guidelines and/or basic data for planning the facility. The instrument used in this study was a 17 page-checklist including 10 dimensions with 183 specific items developed by the researcher. The results of the study revealed that the overall mean score for 10 dimensions was 1.13(JK facility: 1.16 and BL facility: 1.10) explaining a little higher than average level in physical features. Among 10 dimensions, toilet & bathroom arrangements showed the highest mean assessment score(1.28), while common area showed the lowest mean score(0.8). The general conclusions and implications were made based on the results of the assessment.

  • A major inhibition of past work in a slip/fall accident study has been due to the lack of a facility and a methodology to experimentally investigate such behavior without expowting human subjects to the natural danger of injury resulting from a fall. In order to carry out a slip/fall research, a unique facility must be created specially to investigate falling and slipping behavior. One component of this facility will be used to focus a research towards experimental investigations of the basic mechanisms involved in falls. Especially, this compo- nent must be designed, developed, and fabricated to provide passive, reactive support at the point of loss of ba- lance. This component must allow both normal and reduced friction surfaces to be designated to investigate human falling in the experimental conditions. This study will address how a fall arresting system was designed and it would be implemented in actual case of a slip/fall study.

  • To prove a lot of technical difficulties related to the safety management of a railroad fire effectively, we design for the full-scale fire test facility of the railroad vehicle. It will be consist of major 3 part - duct system with smoke cleaning system, measuring section and gas analysis system. The CFD simulation was also carried out to design of the hood and duct system optimization. The results will be help for basic research of the railroad fire safety.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the actual condition of residential environment for the elderly residing in Daejeon. The data were collected through interviews and structured questionnaires. The sujects were 583 elderly people over the age of 65 in Daejeon. Sociodemographic characteristics, living characteristics, housing characteristics, neighborhood environment types, actual usage condition of neighborhood environment, relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and actual usage of neighborhood environment, actual condition of unit interior, were surveyed. The data were analyzed with frequency, percentage, χ²-test, mean using the SPSS package. The major findings were as follows. Features of unit interior which pointed generally were deterioration, soundproofing and size. Features of unit interior which need to be carefully planned were removal of height difference of entrance, removal of the thresholds, installation of emergency bell and room heating control facility. The facilities provided highly within the subject's residential environment were the eldery facility, church, hospital, bank, restaurant, beauty salon/barbershop, supermarket. and the facilities provided lowly were recreational facility, library, elderly school.

  • Major design targets such as test cell type, cell flow, cell bypass ratio, approach velocity, cell depression, front cell distortion, noise level and vibration level to construct a new 150,000 lbf thrust aircraft engine test facility were established. Based on the final aerodynamic and acoustic performance tests conducted at the newly constructed test facility, it was found that the new test facility is judged to be excellent and meets design targets.

  • Combustor is one of the major component of gas turbine engine and its development is done mostly by performance test. Combustors for aviation gasturbine engines has been successfully tested at the test facility in KARI as well as for stationary gasturbine engines. Full scale combustor test requires large amount of high temperature and pressure air, so the test facility is equipped with big air compressor and heater.

  • The diesel driven power generation facility provides most of electricity of island region where is isolated from the main land power supply system. It is possible to extend the life of diesel driven power generation facility by periodic maintenance. However, the long-term use of diesel driven power generation facility increases the operating cost due to aging hardware and reduced plant efficiency. In other words, on-time replacement of aging diesel driven power generation facility reduces plant operation cost. The purpose of this study presents major indicators to represent the characteristics of the diesel generator and conducts sensitivity analysis using Monte Carlo analysis. In addition, status core which indicates quantitatively the state of the diesel driven power generation facility is defined and prepare the replacement criteria based on the state score.

  • Argonne National Laboratory of the United States and Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology (KIPT) of Ukraine have cooperated on the development, design, and construction of a neutron source facility. The facility was constructed at Kharkov, Ukraine, and its commissioning process is underway. The facility will be used for researches, producing medical isotopes, and training young nuclear specialists. The neutron source facility is designed with a provision to include a cryogenically cooled moderator system-a cold neutron source (CNS). This CNS provides low-energy neutrons, which will be used in the scattering experiment and material structures analysis. Cold neutron guides, coated with reflective material for the low-energy neutrons, will be used to transport the cold neutrons to the experimental site. The cold neutron guides would keep the cold neutrons within certain energy and angular space concentrated inside, while most of the gamma rays and high-energy neutrons are not affected by the cold neutron guides. For the KIPT design, the cold neutron guides need to extend several meters outside the main shield of the facility, and curved guides will also be used to remove the gamma and high-energy neutron. The neutron guides should be installed inside a shield structure to ensure an acceptable biological dose in the facility hall. Heavy concrete is the selected shielding material because of its acceptable performance and cost. Shield design analysis was carried out for the CNS guide hall. MCNPX was used as the major computation tool for the design analysis, with neutron and gamma dose calculated separately. Weight windows variance reduction technique was also used in the shield design. The goal of the shield design is to keep the total radiation dose below the $5.0{\mu}Sv/hr$ guideline outside the shield boundary. After a series of iterative MCNPX calculations, the shield configuration and parameters of CNS guide hall were determined and presented in this article.
