In this paper, for 43 sites neighboring to western area of Gangwondo where disaster of debris flow occurred from 2006 to 2013, magnitude of debris flow was estimated from results of site investigation and correlation analysis between influencing factors to its magnitude was performed. Magnitude of channelized debris flow was found greater by 6.5 times of that of hill slope debris flow and approximately 5% of total volume was occurred at initiation part of channelized debris flow. As results of analyzing yield rate of debris flow, for channelized debris flow, yield rate values of $19m^3/m$ and $8m^3/m$ were obtained for total volume being over $10,000m^3/m$ as the large scale of debris flow and less than $10,000m^3/m$ respectively, and value of $5m^3/m$ was estimated for hill slope debris flow. As results of correlation analysis of influencing factors to magnitude of debris flow, runoff distance and erosion width were very highly correlated to its magnitude whereas average slope of basin and erosion depth showed relatively low correlation. In particular, value of erosion depth was in the range of 0.5-2.6 m, being similar range to the value proposed by Ikeya (1981). Triggering rainfall to debris flow such as continuous rainfall and maximum intensity of hour rainfall were analyzed to have low correlation with magnitude of debris flow.
In this study characteristics of debris flow landslide were investigated on the focus of debris flow disaster occurred by heavy rainfall in 2013 at Goeun-ri around Kaeryoung Mt. in Chuncheon-si. Appropriate method for estimating scale of debris flow was investigated by comparing those values from soil loss by Universal Soil Loss Equation, debris flow yield rate obtained by field survey of investigating debris flow path from initiation and erosion to deposition and other methods. As results of this study, it might be an opportunity of contributing to construct the data base for determining the size of erosion control facilities in future.
In this study, the behavior characteristics and triggering rainfall of debris flow were investigated on the basis of DB constructed by performing field investigation and collecting the rainfall data at the sites where debris flow occurred around the west of Gangwon and adjacent areas during the last 10 years. For hill slope and channelized type of debris flow, its behavior characteristic was analyzed through runout channel of debris flow divided into zone of initiation, transportation and deposition and its magnitude was estimated by considering erosion at zones of initiation and transportation. Some considerations related to establishment of landslide forecasting criterion were raised by comparing the analyzed results of analysis of rainfall at the time of debris-flow occurrence with the previous researches about the triggering rainfall of debris flow. In addition, an ID curve of inducing debris flow adequate to the investigated site was proposed and compared with results of previous study.

Debris flow has been considered as one of the major natural hazards and possesses tens to hundreds times higher destructive potential than that of slope failure. In the past 5 years, its occurrence frequency was and is likely to increasing due to the global warming. Although various methods such as basin vegetation or structural dams can be implemented to counter measure the debris flow, these methods are not always the right answer to the problem when magnitude of debris flow is far bigger than could be defended. Land use regulations to avoid the hazard or early debris flow warning system to evacuate the expected inundated area can be more economical and practical actions for those cases. In this study, an early debris flow warning system composed of rainfall measuring device, debris flow sensing device and video camera is introduced. The system is designed to issue the warning when rainfall threshold is exceeded or debris flow is sensed by sensing device. Developed monitoring system can be used to cope promptly with the debris flow risk.
The rainfall pattern, rainfall intensity as well as topographical conditions used for the analysis of debris flow affect, in general, the magnitude of debris flow and flow velocity, when debris flow occurs. The consideration of topographical conditions implies that the topography is equally divided into grids and the slope of inside the grid is computed as an average, leading to, in turn, obtain the closer results to the reality as the grid is smaller in the case of the severely bended topography. Although the size of grid should be as small as possible so as for more accurate analysis of debris flow, the analysis of debris flow has been so far conducted by using sparsely divided grids due to the limitation of analysis algorithm, computational ability and running time. So, it is necessary to suggest an appropriate grid size for the practical approaches. Therefore, this study presents the evaluation of the effect of the size of a grid on the debris flow besides the factors which referred to the previous studies such as accumulated rainfall, rainfall intensity and rainfall duration time. From this, it enables to suggest a rational and practical grid size for topography to be divided.

Investigation and analysis of the debris flow characteristics such as basin topography, geologic conditions of initiation location and triggering rainfall are required to systematically mitigate debris flow hazard. In this paper, 48 debris flows which had caused some damages to the highway in the past 5 years are investigated and their characteristics of basic topography and triggering rainfall are analyzed. Debris flows are found to occur in small basins having the area of $0.01{\sim}0.65km^2$ range and mostly initiated by the surficial failure of natural slope having the inclination of 29~55 degree during the intense rainfall. As for the triggering rainfall, rainfall of 2 to 5 year recurrence frequency are found to be able to trigger the debris flow and magnitude of debris flow in a basin could depend on the rainfall intensity and cumulative amount.

Climate change caused by global warming increases the frequency of occurrence of super typhoons and causes various types of sediment disasters such as debris flows in the mountainous area. This study is to evaluate the behavior of debris flow according to the multiplier value of the precipitation characteristics and the quantity of debris flow according to the typhoon category. For the analysis of the debris flow, the finite difference method for time elapse was applied. The larger the typhoon category, the higher the peak value of the flow discharge of debris flow and the faster the arrival time. When the precipitation characteristic multiplier is large, the fluctuation amplitude is high and the bandwidth is wide. When the slope angle was steeper, water discharge increased by 2~2.5 times or more, and the fluctuation of the flow discharge of debris flow increased. All of the velocities of debris flow were included to the class of "Very rapid", and the distribution of the erosion or sedimentation velocity of debris flows showed that the magnitude of erosion increased from the beginning, large-scale erosion occurred, and flowed downstream. The results of this study will provide information for predicting debris flow disasters, structural countermeasures and establishing countermeasures for reinforcing resilience in vulnerable areas.
The bottom-simulating reflector (BSR) is the most commonly observed seismic indicator of gas hydrate in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea. We processed ten representative seismic reflection profiles, selected from a large data set, for amplitude variation with offset (AVO) analysis of the BSR to estimate gas-hydrate concentrations. First, BSRs were divided into five groups based on their seismic amplitudes and associated sediment types: (1) very high-amplitude BSRs in turbidite/hemipelagic sediments, (2) high-amplitude BSRs in debris-flow deposits, (3) moderate-amplitude BSRs in turbidite/hemipelagic sediments, (4) very low-amplitude BSRs in debris-flow deposits, and (5) very low-amplitude BSRs in seismic chimneys. The AVO responses of the group 1 and 3 BSRs are characterized by a rapid decrease and a relatively slow decrease in magnitude with offset, respectively. The AVO response of the group 2 BSR is characterized by a relatively slow increase in magnitude with offset. The AVO responses of the groups 4 and 5 BSRs are characterized by a flat AVO with very small zero-offset amplitude. Theoretical AVO curves, based on the three-phase Biot theory, suggest that the group 1 and 3 BSRs may be related to high (> 40%) concentrations of gas hydrate whereas the group 2 BSRs may indicate low (< 20%) concentrations of gas hydrate. The AVO responses of the group 4 and 5 BSRs cannot be compared with the theoretical models because of their very small zero-offset amplitudes. The comparison of the AVO response of the BSR at the UBGH-04 well with theoretical models suggests about 10% gas-hydrate concentration above the gas-hydrate stability zone.

The bridge crossing river is the one of the major factors causing backwater level rising. Furthermore, the bridges in the mountainous areas increase the flood damage in the upstream of the bridge due to the blockage by debris. In this research, the effects of debris to the magnitude of flood damage in the study river basin were simulated by using HEC-RAS and HEC-GeoRAS models. With assumption that the backwater caused by debris blocking the space between bridge piers is the only factor causing inundation, the unsteady flow simulation was carried out with various case studies. The potential inundation area with the overflow locations and volumes could be estimated as the results of simulation. However, the simulation results also reveal the limitations of inaccurate estimation of inundation area and depth. To overcome these hindrances, DEM and satellite images were applied to the simulation. By readjusting the inundation area using digital maps and satellite images and calibrating overflow volume and depth using DEM, the accuracy of simulation could be increased resulting more accurate flood damage estimation.

For development of landslide risk assessment techniques using GIS(Geographic Information System), this study classifies the category of socioeconomic factors. The landslide quantitative risk assessment performs first prediction of flow trajectory and runout distance of debris flow over natural terrain. Based on those results, it can be analyzed the factors of socioeconomic which are directly related to the magnitude of risk due to landslide hazards. Those risk assessment results can deliver factual damage situation prediction to policy making for the landslide damage mitigation. Therefore, this study is based on feature classification of the digital map ver. 2.0 provided by the National Geographic Information Institute. The category of factors can be used as useful data in preventing landslide.
