  • $La_{1-z}Nd_z(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}$ and their hydrides were investigated to obtain large magnetocaloric effects (MCEs) in a wide temperature range, including room temperature, for applications in magnetic refrigents. Since the magnetization change due to the itinerant-electron metamagentic (IEM) transition for $La_{1-z}Nd_z(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}$ becomes larger with increasing z, the isothermal magnetic entropy change ${\Delta}S_m$ and the relative cooling power (RCP) are enhanced. In addition, the Curie temperatrue $T_C$ of $La_{0.8}Nd_{0.2}(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}$ is increased from 193 to 319 K by hydrogen absorption, with the IEM transition. The maximum value of $-{\Delta}S_m$, $-{\Delta}S{_m}^{max}$, in a magnetic field change of 2 T for $La_{0.8}Nd_{0.2}(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}H_{1.1}$ is about 23 J/kg K at $T_C$ = 288 K, which is larger than that of 19 J/kg K at $T_C$ = 276 K for $La(Fe_{0.88}Si_{0.12})_{13}H_{1.0}$. The value of RCP = 179 J/kg of the former is also larger than 160 J/kg of the latter. It is concluded that the partial substitution of Nd improves MCEs in a wide temperautre range, including room temperature.

  • The 1st International Conference on Magnetic Refrigeration at Room Temperature was held at Montreux, Switzerland during September 27-30, 2005. The conference was the first of its kind to bring together about 140 scientists and engineers interested in magnetic refrigeration in one place. The magnetocaloric effect was discovered in 1881, however, magnetic refrigeration at room temperature was demonstrated to be viable in 1997 Since then, R&D efforts toward magnetic refrigeration have been on the rise around the world, in both areas of systems and materials. The conference reflected the recent R&D trend in magnetic refrigeration at room temperature, which includes the use of permanent magnet instead of superconductor magnet, switch from reciprocating to rotary magnetic refrigeration system, development of magnetic materials based on transition metal elements besides rare earth materials such as gadolinium(Gd).

  • The $^{14}N$ NMR spectra for $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ crystals were obtained near the phase transition temperature $T_C=223K$, and were found to precisely reflect the symmetry change in the crystal at this first-order phase transition. Changes in the resonance frequencies near $T_C$ were attributed to the structural phase transition. In the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases, two inequivalent NH4 groups were distinguished in the $^{14}N$ NMR spectra. The two types, $NH_4$(1) and $NH_4$(2), have slightly different local environments. Consequently, we conclude that the phase transition is caused by the change in the environment of the $^{14}N$ nuclei in the $NH_4$ groups, rather than by the $SO_4$ groups.

  • (BaSr)$TiO_3$ (BST) thick films were prepared by tape casting method, using $BaTiO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$ powder slurry and their dielectric properties were investigated. With an additive, $Li_2CO_3$, the sintering temperature was lowered by $200^{\circ}C$. Sintering density was 5.7 g/$cm^3$ and the BST thick films exhibited a maximum dielectric constant, tunability at temperatures near phase transition point. Whilst their characteristics were deteriorated above the phase transition temperature, they were unchanged below the phase transition temperature, which is presumedly due to the acceleration of $90^{\circ}$ domain formation, its contribution to the relaxation of internal stress and the increase in sintering according to the replacement of Li.

  • We investigated theoretically the quantum optical transition properties of qusi 2-Dinensinal Landau splitting system, in Si. We apply the Quantum Transport theory (QTR) to the system in the confinement of electrons by square well confinement potential. We use the projected Liouville equation method with Equilibrium Average Projection Scheme (EAPS). In order to analyze the quantum transition, we compare the temperature and the magnetic field dependencies of the QTLW and the QTLS on two transition processes, namely, the phonon emission transition process and the phonon absorption transition process. Through the analysis of this work, we found the increasing properties of QTLW and QTLS of Si with the temperature and the magnetic fields. We also found the dominant scattering processes are the phonon emission transition process.

  • A series of pH and temperature-responsive (N,N-diethylacrylamide-co-methylacrylic acid) copolymers were synthesized by radical copolymerization and characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) $^1H$, $^{13}C$ and LLS. The effects of salt and pH on the phase transition behaviors of the copolymers were investigated by uv. With increasing NaCl concentration, significant salt effects on their phase transition behaviors were observed. UV spectroscopic studies showed that the phase transition became faster with increasing NaCl concentration. In addition, the phase transition behaviors of copolymers were sensitive to pH. The pH and temperature sensitivity of these copolymers would make an interesting drug delivery system.

  • Magnetoresistance and magnetization of Sr$_{l-x}K_xBiO_3$ were both measured as functions of temperature and magnetic field. Resistivity goes to zero at T=10.1K and the overall superconducting transition behavior under applied magnetic fields is similar to that of other BiO based superconductors. Also, below T<5K we have observed the reappearance of finite resistivity with a power law temperature dependence( ${\rho}$ ${\sim}$T$^1$); the reentrant superconducting transition of resistivity. Contrary to the Josephson weak link effect in polycrystalline samples, which gives the depression of the superconducting state with increasing electrical current or magnetic field, the superconducting state for T<5K is resumed by applying a higher current or magnetic field. Magnetic susceptibility( ${\chi}$ ) of Sr$_{l-x}K_xBiO_3$ for T<5K also shows similar trends to that observed in transport measurements: increase of ${\chi}$ (paramagnetic-like behavior) at a low magnetic fields(B=50 Oe) and, the resumption of perfect diamagnetism at high fields.

  • A thioredoxin from hyperthermophile, Methanococcus jannashii (MjTRX) was characterized by use of the differential scanning calorimetry to understand the mechanisms of thermodynamic stability. MjTRX has an unfolding transition temperature of 116.5$^{\circ}C$, although the maximum free energy of the unfolding (9.9 Kcal/mol) is similar to that of E. coli thioredoxin (ETRX, 9.0 Kcal/mol). However, the temperature of maximum stability is higher than ETRX by 20$^{\circ}C$, indicating that the unfolding transition temperature increased by shifting the temperature of maximum stability. MjTRX has lower enthalpy and entropy of the unfolding compared to ETRX maintaining a similar free energy of the unfolding. From the structure and the thermodynamic parameters of MjTRX, we showed that the unfolding transition temperature of MjTRX is increased due to the decreased entropy of the unfolding. Decreasing the unfolded state entropy and increasing the folded state entropy can decrease the entropy of the unfolding. In the case of MjTRX, the increased number of proline residues decreased the unfolded state entropy and the increased enthalpy in the folded state increased the folded state entropy.

  • This paper studies the effects of the Mn-site substitution by nickel on the magnetic properties and the magnetocaloric properties of $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}Mn_{1-x}Ni_xO_3$ (x = 0, 0.05 and 0.1). The orthorhombic crystal structures of the samples are confirmed by the room temperature X-ray diffraction. The dependence of the Curie temperature ($T_C$) and the magnetic entropy change (${\Delta}S_M$) on the Ni doping content was investigated. The samples with x = 0 had the first order phase transition, while the samples with x = 0.05 and 0.1 had the second order phase transition. As the concentration of Ni increased, the maximum entropy change (${\mid}{\Delta}S_M{\mid}_{max}$) decreased gradually, from 2.78 $J{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$ (x = 0) to 1.02 $J{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$ (x = 0.1), in a magnetic field change of 15 kOe. The measured value of $T_C$ was 185 K, 150 K and 145 K for x = 0, 0.05 and 0.1, respectively. The phase transition temperatures became wider as x increased. It indicates that the Mn-site substitution by Ni may be used to tailor the Curie temperature in $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}Mn_{1-x}Ni_xO_3$.

  • Magnetization versus temperature and magnetic-field measurements, M(T, $H_a$), have been carried out to study the magnetic and critical properties of polycrystalline $La_{1-x}Ba_xCoO_3$ (x = 0.3 and 0.5) cobaltites. These compounds with the density of ${\sim}6.2g/cm^3$ crystallized in the $R{\bar{3}}c$ rhombohedral and $Pm{\bar{3}}m$ cubic structures, respectively. With an applied field $H_a=200Oe$, M(T) data have revealed that the samples with x = 0.3 and 0.5 exhibit the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (FM-PM) phase transition at the Curie temperature points $T_C=202$ and 157 K, respectively. At 4.2 K, the saturation magnetization ($M_{sat}$) decreases from 35.9 emu/g for x = 0.3-26.1 emu/g for x = 0.5. Particularly, the critical-behavior analyses in the vicinity of $T_C$ reveal all samples undergoing a second-order phase transition, with critical exponent values (${\beta}=0.328$ and ${\gamma}=1.251$ for x = 0.3, and ${\beta}=0.331$ and ${\gamma}=1.246$ for x = 0.5) close to those expected for the 3D Ising model. This proves short-range magnetic order existing in $La_{1-x}Ba_xCoO_3$. We believe that magnetic inhomogeneities due to the mixture of hole-rich FM regions (confined in the trivalent-cobalt hole-poor anti-FM matrix) and uniaxial anisotropy prevent long-range order in $La_{1-x}Ba_xCoO_3$.
