  • Recent observations have shown that coronal magnetic fields in the northern (southern) hemisphere tend to have negative (positive) magnetic helicity. There has been controversy as to whether this hemispheric pattern is of surface or sub-surface origin. A number of studies have focused on clarifying the effect of the surface differential rotation on the change of magnetic helicity in the corona. Meanwhile, recent observational studies reported the existence of transient shear flows in active regions that can feed magnetic helicity to the corona at a much higher rate than the differential rotation does. Here we propose that such transient shear flows may be driven by the torque produced by either the axial or radial expansion of the coronal segment of a twisted flux tube that is rooted deeply below the surface. We have derived a simple relation between the coronal expansion parameter and the amount of helicity transferred via shear flows. To demonstrate our proposition, we have inspected Yohkoh soft X-ray images of NOAA 8668 in which strong shear flows were observed. As a result, we found that the expansion of magnetic fields really took place in the corona while transient shear flows were observed in the photosphere, and the amount of magnetic helicity change due to the transient shear flows is quantitatively consistent with the observed expansion of coronal magnetic fields. The transient shear flows hence may be understood as an observable manifestation of the pumping of magnetic helicity out of the interior portions of the field lines driven by the expansion of coronal parts as was originally proposed by Parker (1974).

  • Galactic spiral arms are abundant with interesting gaseous substructures. It has been suggested that arm substructures arise from the wiggle instability (WI) of spiral shocks. While the nature of the WI remained elusive, our recent work without considering magnetic fields shows that the WI is physically originated from the accumulation of potential vorticity (PV) generated by deformed shock fronts. To elucidate the characteristics of the WI in more realistic galactic situations, we extend our previous linear stability analysis of spiral shocks by including magnetic fields. We find that magnetic fields reduce the amount of density compression at shocks, making the shock fronts to move toward the upstream direction. Magnetic tension forces from bent field lines stabilize the WI by prevent the generation of PV. When the spiral-arm forcing is F=5% of the centrifugal force of galaxy rotation, the maximum growth rate of the WI is found to be about 1.0, 0.4, and 0.2 times the orbital angular frequency for the plasma parameter ${\beta}=100$, 10, and 5, respectively. Shocks with ${\beta}=1$ are stable to the WI for F=5%, while becoming still unstable when F=10%.

  • The present study numerically investigates two-dimensional fluid flow in the confined jet flow in the presence of applied magnetic field. Numerical simulations to calculate the fluid flow and heat transfer in the confined jet are performed for different Reynolds numbers in the absence and presence of magnetic fields in the range of $0{\le}N{\le}0.05$, where N is the Stuart number (interaction parameter) which is the ratio of electromagnetic force to inertia force. The present study reports the detailed information of flow in the channel at different Stuart numbers. As the intensity of applied magnetic fields increases, the vortex shedding formed in the channel becomes weaker and the oscillating amplitude of impinging jet decreases. The flow fields become the steady state if the Stuart number is greater than a critical value. Thus the pressure coefficients at the stagnation point also vary as a function of Stuart number.

  • The present study numerically investigates two-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer ir the confined jet flow in the presence of applied magnetic field. For the purpose of controlling vortex shedding and heat transfer, numerical simulations to calculate the fluid flow and heat transfer in the confined jet are performed for different Reynolds numbers in the absence and presence of magnetic fields and for different Prandtl numbers of 0.02 (liquid metal), 0.7 (air) and 7 (water) in the range of $0{\le}N{\le}0.05$, where N is the Stuart number (interaction parameter) which is the ratio of electromagnetic force to inertia force. The present study reports the detailed information of flow and thermal quantities in the channel at different Stuart numbers. As the intensity of applied magnetic fields increases, the vortex shedding formed in the channel becomes weaker and the oscillating amplitude of impinging jet decreases. The flow and thermal fields become the steady state if the Stuart number is greater than the critical value. Thus the Nusselt number at the stagnation point representing the heat transfer characteristics also vary as a function of Stuart number.

  • Chromium-doped zinc ferrite nanoparticles with the general formula CryZnFe2-yO4 (y = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1) were synthesized by a surfactant-assisted chemical co-precipitation route using metal nitrate salt precursors. The phase purity and structural parameters were determined by powder X-ray diffraction. The concentration of Cr3+ doped into ZnFe2O4 (ZF) noticeably affected the crystallite size, which was in the range of 22 nm to 36 nm, and all samples showed a single cubic spinel structure without any secondary phase or impurities. The lattice parameter, X-ray density, and skeletal density increased with an increase in the Cr-doping concentration; on the other hand, a decreasing trend was observed for the particle size and porosity. The influence of Cr3+ substitution on ZF magnetic properties were studied under an applied field of 15 kOe. The overall results revealed that the incorporation of a small amount of Cr dopant changed the structural, electrical, and magnetic properties of ZF.

  • The purpose of this paper is to depict the effect of rotation and initial stress on a magneto-thermoelastic medium with diffusion. The problem discussed within memory-dependent derivative in the context of the three-phase-lag model (3PHL), Green-Naghdi theory of type III (G-N III) and Lord and Shulman theory (L-S). Analytical expressions of the considered variables are obtained by using Laplace-Fourier transforms technique. Numerical results for the field quantities given in the physical domain and illustrated graphically in the absence and presence of a magnetic field, initial stress as well as the rotation. The differences in variable thermal conductivity are also presented at different parameter of thermal conductivity. The numerical results of the field variables are presented graphically to discuss the effect of various parameters of interest. Some special cases are also deduced from the present investigation.

  • In the machine tool industry, direct drive linear motor technology is an interesting means to achieve high acceleration, and to increase reliability. This paper analyzes and compares the characteristics of a tubular linear motor with Halbach and radial magnet array, respectively. First, the governing equations are established analytically in terms of the magnetic vector potential and two dimensional cylindrical coordinate systems. Then, we derive magnetic field solutions due to the PMs and the currents. Motor thrust, flux linkage and back emf are also derived. The results are shown to be in good conformity with those obtained from the commonly used finite element method. Finally, control parameters are obtained from analytical solutions.

  • In order to provide a basic information to locate the sensor of remote-indicating magnetic compass onboard, an empirical model for the over-all ship's magnetism was developed based on the periodicity of the observed magnetic field around the vessels. The values of model parameters were determined by least-square method and optimum numbers of them were fixed using Akaike's information criterion theory, and also an approximation method to determine parameter was proposed based on the symmetrical characteristic of observed data versus ship's length. The confidence level of the newly developed models was tested by analysis of variance method. The agreement between the modelled and real values was found to be remarkably accurate.

  • Abstract - Linear Synchronous Motor has a large airgap comparing with rotary-type motor and especially, Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor(PM-LSM) which uses permanent magnet as a magnetic field, has a very large effective magnet airgap owing to permanent magnet structure. Accordingly, in case of 2-D analysis of the motor, the analysis error becomes large because leakage flux by which normal direction of the analysis region can not be considered, In this paper, the characteristic of PM-LSM for Maglev vehicle is analyzed exactly by 3-D Finite Element Method(3-D FEM). As the result, the effect of lateral-direction airgap magnetic flux density distribution on the analysis precision has been investigated and the motor characteristics according to primary motor parameter have been also made clear quantitatively. The accuracy of 3-D FEM has been confirmed by comparing the calculated results with the experimental results.
