  • The purpose of this study was to identify middle school students' mental models on plate tectonics and to compare the mental models of verbal-learning-style students with those of visual-learning-style students. 94 student participants in 9th grade were requested to draw and explain three topics; generation of magma, the formation of the mountain range and the interior of the Earth. The criterions for analyzing the mental models are derived from the data of the drawing task. The research results were as follows: The mental models on the generation of magma were classified as 'unstable model,' 'partial casual model,' 'causal model,' and 'conceptual model.' On the other hand, the mental models on the interior of the Earth were classified as 'static unstable model,' 'dynamic unstable model,' and 'conceptual model.' Students holding 'unstable model' were unable to relate the plate collision and the magma generation. They showed a variety of alternative conceptions of study areas, such as 'magma is generated from the core' and 'the mountain is formed by rising of the plates themselves.' Also, visual-learning-style students showed higher proportion of conceptual models and lower proportion of unstable mental models than verbal-learning-style students on three topics. The findings revealed that the students tend to have different concepts on the plate tectonics depending on their learning style.

  • In this study, the variations of geoid measured by GRACE satellite are investigated in the 20 volcanic areas erupted since 2005, and it is recognized that a detailed geological study is necessary in using geoid data for a research of the magmatic activities under the volcano. Therefore, the relationship between the regional geoid variation obtained by GRACE satellite and the change of magma activity, is studied in Japan's Shinmoedake volcano in the Kirishima volcanic complex whose eruption in 2011 was studied in detail geologically. Throughout this study the increase of geoid from 2002 in the Shinmoedake volcanic area is confirmed to be caused by the increase of gravity under the volcano, which is well matched with geological interpretation of the continuous intrusion of basaltic magma into magma chamber during several years before the 2011 eruption. The result indicates that information of the geoid variation measured by GRACE satellite is useful for monitoring the possibility of volcanic eruption although there is a need to more study to be able to confirm the possibility.

  • There are exposed Samrangjin Tuff and intracaldera intrusions, of which rhyolitic rocks emplaced as postcollapsed central and ring intrusions within the Samrangjin caldera, and fine-grained granodiorite and biotite granite as regional tectonic intrusions nearby. The Samrangjin Tuff and the rhyolitic rocks are of a single Samrangjin magmatic system. Flow-banded rhyolite among rhyolitic rocks was emplaced in the outer part of the ring intrusions, rhyodacite in the inner part of the eastern ring, and porphyritic dacite and dacite porphyry in the inner part of the northwestern ring. Totally the Samrangjin Tuff and the rhyolitic rocks range from rhyolite to dacite in chemical composition. The Rb-Sr isotopic data of the Samrangjin Tuff and the rhyolitic rocks yield an age of $80.8{\pm}1.5(2{\sigma})$ Ma with the initial $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratio of $0.70521{\pm}0.00010(2{\sigma})$. The continuous compositional zonations generally define a large stratified magma system in the postcollapse magma chamber. The Sr isotopic data suggest that the compositional zonations might have resulted from the fractional crystallization of a parental dacitic magma.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of various type of Magma seawater (MSW) concentrations on plant growth and useful mineral contents in Bletilla striata. In the RO (Reverse Osmosis) and ED (Electronic Distal) treatment, hardness of medium was poored in 3.0 g/L gelrite but increased in 8.0 g/L plant agar, 38,000 and $2,000g/cm^2$ respectably. We analyzed the morphological and physiological characteristics differences of B. striata treated various MSW. Survival frequency of plant and growth (shoot length, shoot diameter, root length, root diameter, shoot/root ratio) were significantly increased in RO and ED treatment at 50% and 10%, especially. Chlorophyll contents in ED treatments were higher than those in control and RO treatment. The content of strontium (Sr) in 20, 50, 75, 100% ED treatment, were higher than those in the control and RO, ED 1, 5, 10% treatment. These results showed that treatment of ED with the range of 20~100% could be used to supply the strontium enriched orchid plant. It is considered that MSW may be applied for use in Magma seawater to promotion of growth and produced functional plant.

  • Magnetite, a major constituent mineral of the Hongcheon carbonatite-phoscorite complex, was produced over three stages in each rock type and decreased in quantity toward the late stage. Electron microprobe analyses for magnetite revealed that Ti and V were detected in traces, but showed increasing tendency from early to late stage. On the contrary, Mg and Mn decreased distinctly, and it is the general differentiation trend of carbonatitic magma. Al also showed decreasing tendency in carbonatite and phoscorite, and Cr was mostly below detection limit except late phoscorite. In early stage, $Fe^{2+}$ was largely replaced by $Mg{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$, and $Fe^{3+}$ by $Al^{3+}$ in magnetite, but it has nearly pure composition in late stage. Tendency of increase in V and decrease in Mn toward late stage represents that magma differentiation progressed under the condition of decreasing oxygen fugacity. Low concentrations of Mg, Al, Cr and Ti, as well as the absence of olivine and phlogopite, suggest that the Hongcheon carbonatite-phoscorite complex was generated from depleted magma. Especially, lower concentrations of Mg in magnetite compared to other typical carbonatite-phoscorite complex, and abundant occurrence of Fe-carbonate minerals and quartz in late stage, suggest that magma differentiation of the Hongcheon carbonatite-phoscorite proceeded to the latest stage.

  • The Wondong Caldera, formed by the voluminous eruption of the rhyolitic ashflows of the Wondong Tuff which is about 1,550 m thick at the intracaldera and 550 m at the outflow, is a resurgent caldera which shows a dome structure on the central exposure of the caldera. The Wondong caldera volcanism eviscerated the magma chamber by a series of explosive eruptions during which rhyolitic magma was ejected, as small fallouts and voluminous ash-flows, to form the Wondong Tuff. The explosive eruptions began with ash-falls, progressed through pumice-falls and transmitted ash-flows. During the ash-flow phase the initial central vent eruption transmitted into late ring-fissure eruption which accompanied with caldera collapse. Contemporaneous collapse of the roop of the chamber resulted in the formation of the Wondong Caldera, a subcircular depression subsiding about 1,930 deep. Following the collapse, quartz porphyry was intruded as ring dykes along the ring fracture near the southwestern caldera rim. Subsequently the central part of the caldera floor began to be uplifted into a circular resurgent dome by the rising of residual magma. Concurrent with the resurgent doming, the volcaniclastic sediments of Hwajeri Formation were accumulated in the caldera moat and then rhyodacite lava erupted from the initial central resurgent dome and another ash-flow tuff from the northern ring fracture. After the sedimentation, the find-grained granodiorite was intruded as an arc along the eastern ring fracture of the caldera. Finally in the central part, the resurgent magma was emplaced as a hornblende biotite granite stock that formed the central dome.

  • The modal analyses on the phenocryst phases and the normative mineralogies from the bulk chemical analyses record that the volcanic rocks related to the Yangsan caldera might been derived from compositionally zoned magma. The volcanic rocks show linearly continuous mineralogical gradients, not only totally in the relations between $SiO_2$ and proportion of phenocryst content, but also within each rock unit in the relations between total phenocryst content and the proportion, Q-Ab-Or and Q-An(Ab-Or) diagrams. The roughly gradational modal variations of the phenocryst phases are shown upward within each rock unit. However, the contents and proportion of the phenocrysts in the Yangsan Tuff and the Hwajeri Formation represent the zigzaggedly undulatory variations. The continuous mineralogical gradients without large gaps define a large zoned magma system in the pre-eruptive, later precollapse and postcollapse magma chambers respectively. The zigzagged variations reflect the intermittent eruptive pulses representing any time gaps.

  • This article carried studies of the petrographical and petrochemical characteristics on the Cretaceous volcanic rocks in the area of Janggun peak and Gyemyeong peak which is located at the northeastern area of Mt. Geumjeong, Busan. The areas are composed of andesitic rock, sedimentary rock, rhyolitic rock, and intrusive hornblende, biotite granites, in ascending order. According to petrochemistry, the major elements show the calc-alkaline rock series ranged medium-K to high-K. With increasing $SiO_2$, $Al_{2}O_{3}$, $Fe_{2}O_{3}$, $TiO_2$ CaO, MgO MnO and $P_{2}O_{5}$ are decreased and $K_{2}O$ and $Na_{2}O$ are increased in the volcanic rocks. The trace element compositions show high LILE/HFSE ratios and negative anomaly of Nb, and REE patterns show enrichments in LREE and (-) anomaly values increase of Eu from the basaltic andesite to andesite facies, therefore the volcanic rocks have typical characteristics of continental margin arc calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, produced in the subduction environment. The volcanic rock show nearly the same patterns in spider and REE diagram. Fractional crystallization of the basaltic magma would have produced the calc-alkaline andesitic magma. And the rhyolitic magma seems to have been evolved from the basaltic andesitic magma with fractional crystallization of plagioclase, pyroxene, hornblende, biotite.

  • The Creataceous volcanic rocks distributed in the southeastern part (Kyeongsang basin) of Korea peninsula are composed of basalt, basaltic andesite, andesite, dacite and rhyolite. The variation of major elements show that contents of MgO, CaO, $FeO^T$, $Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$ and $P_2O_5$ decrease with increasing of $SiO_2$, but $K_2O$ contents are increased slightly, $Na_2O$ widely dispersed. We can show slightly inflection point and low frequency of dacites in range between 63-65 wt.% $SiO_2$, while continuous trend exit in variation diagram. Variation trends in Harker diagrams for the major, minor, trace and REEs suggest that the BAV (basaltic to andesitic volcanics) and DRV (dacitic to rhyolitic volcanics) are not related to a simple crystal fractionation process. In the regime of under 65 wt. % in silica content, fractionation of olivine and clinopyroxene is predominant, while that of plagioclase happens strongly higher than 65 wt.% (e.g., $SiO_2$, vs. Eu and Sr, MgO vs. $Al_2O_3$ and CaO). The latter means low-pressure fractional crystallization for DRV. On the discriminant diagram, DRV are located in more mature environment than BAV. The $(Ce/Sm)_N$ vs. CeN digram shows that these two classes cannot be related to crystal fractionation. If they had been produced by fractionation, although they plotted in a slightly elongate cluster along the same horizontal trend, DRV should lie to the right of these primitive compositions. These diagrams clearly rule out a simple fractionation throughout from BAV to DRV. BAV had been influenced greatly subductiong slab as shown by K/Yb vs. Ta/Yb. We suggest that BAV primitive magma generated higher degree of partial melting than DRV primitive magma. LILE (K, Ba, $Rb{\pm}Th$) enriched characteristics as shown in BAV are inherited from subducting slab fluids and/or higher degree of partial melting of mantle material. However, lower degree of partial melting of mantle relative to BA V and contamination at high-level magma reservoir caused LILE enrichment to DRV.

  • Several volcanic activities have continued in Mt. Baekdu since the Millennium eruption, and these phenomena have increased the need for volcanic activity surveillance. Various geophysical approaches are needed to obtain the depth and size of magma chamber that lie several kilometers below the surface. We examined the applicability of direct-current resistivity survey in this study. In order to explore the deep magma chamber of Mt. Baekdu, which has a spatial limitation due to the borderline, a large-scale survey with a length of tens of kilometers should be conducted. This type of survey requires a distributed measurement system and optimized exploration designs. Therefore, we propose survey designs taking advantage of our developed distributed acquisition system and analyze the applicability using numerical simulation. We confirmed that our designs that use single survey line with offline transmitting points show comparable results to the conventional 3D survey. It is expected that our research result can contribute to the deep geophysical exploration in Mt. Baekdu.
