  • Studies were conducted to investigate the incidense of insect pests in transplanted and direct seeded paddy fields in southern region of Korea. Population dencities of the rice green leafhopper (RGLH: Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler) and rice leaffolder (RLF: Cnaphalocroch medinalh Guenee) were higher in machine transplanted than in direct seeded, but the brown planthopper (BPH: Nilaparvata lugens Stal) and smaller brown planthopper (SBPH: Laodelphax striatellus Fallen) were abundant in direct seeded. However, no significant difference was found between machine transplanted and direct seeded fields in the incidense of rice stem borer (RSB: Chilo suppressalis Walker), whiteback planthopper (WBPH: Sogatella furcifera Horvath), and rice stem magot (RSM: C'hlorops oryzae Matsumura). Occurrence of rice key pests were affected more by transplanting time than other cultural practices. Later transplanting induced higher populations of BPH, WBPH, SBPH, RGLH. However, RSB and RLF caused higher damage in earlier transplanted paddy field.

  • The effect of transplanting method of rice seedlings on weed occurrence was investigated at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1983. Rice was transplanted by hand and machine and eleven common herbicides were applied. The greatest weeds were harvested from the plot that rice was not transplanted and more weeds encountered at machine transplanted plot than hand transplanted plot. The degree of weed suppression by rice plant itself was 50% for machine transplatning and 55% for hand transplanting, respectively. Simpson index and community dominance of weed species were the highest in hand transplanting and followed by machine transplanting and no rice plot in order. Rice grain yield was exponentially correlated with the amounts of weed occurrence and more yield loss exhibited at machine transplanting than hand transplanting in the same amount of weeds. In the herbicidal activity, most of herbicides performed better at hand transplanting than machine transplanting while the degree of difference between transplanting methods varied depend on herbicide used.

  • To obtain a basic information on the development of effective control strategies for weedy rice in direct seeding rice cultivation, occurrence patterns of weedy rice as influenced by different cultural practices such as cultivation method, water management, seeding time, and tillage were investigated in field or pot experiments. High occurrence of weedy rice was observed in a continuous direct seeding paddy field as compared to machine transplanted one. Based on the percent of weedy rice panicle over three years trial, high ridged dry seeding was highest with 36.9%, followed by wet seeding with 30.9%, water seeding with 14.6% and machine transplanting rice with 0.8%, indicating 97.8% reduction in weedy rice occurrence by machine transplanting rice as compared with high ridged dry seeding. Germination of weedy rice was promoted to 83-94 % when rice panicle was flooded from September 30 to October 10 for 6 days and 74-88% for 9 days on October 20. Weedy rice occurrence was also substantially reduced by delayed seeding on June 10 and intensive tillage. The results suggest that machine transplanting rice be more effective cultural practice than flooding treatment, delayed seeding and intensive tillage when weedy rice problem occurs in direct seeded paddy field.

  • A field study was conducted over a 3-year period from 2014 to 2016 in the central plain area, Suwon, Korea, 1) to compare the biomass production between machine-transplanted and water-broadcast seeded silage rice and 2) to elucidate the growth factors that affect the difference in biomass production between the two cultivation practices. The heading date for the water-broadcast seeded silage rice was September 11-18, which was delayed by 11-17 days when compared to that for the machine-transplanted silage rice. On average, water-broadcast seeded silage rice had a shorter plant height, more panicles per area, and a greater biomass production because of the increased straw dry weight. However, the difference in dry weight of each plant organ between the two cultivation practices exhibited yearly variation. When the data were pooled across experimental years, cultivation practices, and varieties, biomass production was highly positively correlated with straw dry weight but not with panicle dry weight. When the ratio of water-broadcast seeding to machine-transplanting was analyzed, total dry weight and straw dry weight were positively associated with each other, whereas no relationship was found between total dry weight and panicle dry weight. Despite that water-broadcast seeded silage rice produced more panicles per area than machine-transplanted silage rice, the two cultivation practices had a similar dry weight per culm. Therefore, we conclude that the silage rice from the water-broadcast seeding, compared to the machine-transplanting, produced more biomass because of the combination of the increased panicle number per area and a similar dry weight per culm. These results suggest that silage rice could be produced through water-broadcast seeding to increase biomass production with low labor and cost input.

  • Direct seeding of rice is a time- and laborsaving method, compared to machine transplanting. However, the area planted to direct-seeded rice is decreasing because of instability of seedling establishment, lodging, occurrence of weedy rice, and deterioration of grain quality. A newly developed wet-hill-seeding of rice, a type of direct seeding method, has shown features of growth similar to machine transplanted rice. This study was carried out to compare tillering pattern, heading characteristics and grain filling traits between transplanting and wet-hill-seeding in rice. Tillering of wet-hill-seeded rice was more vigorous than that of transplanted rice showing maximum tiller number 30~100% higher than transplanted rice. Wet-hill seeded rice showed later heading and shorter heading duration than transplanted rice. To find out the relationship between heading characteristics and grain filling traits, every panicle was tagged for flowering date, and the panicles on each heading date were inspected for grain filling traits. Wet-hill seeded rice and transplanted rice exhibited no significant difference in culm length, panicle length, the percentage of grain filling and perfect brown rice on each heading date during total heading period. Therefore, we conclude that wet-hill-seeding method is not inferior to machine transplanting in terms of seedling establishment, growth, grain filling and head rice yield.

  • To determine none top soil covering in rice seedling nursery method for the sparse machine transplanting, four different sowing methods were tested. Shoot and root length, fresh weight, leaf number and color using leaf color chart(LCC) and SPAD were collected as the data comparison of methods. The seedling height showed the highest growth according to the conventional (230g seed rate of pre-emerged seeds and top-soil covering) > high sowing density 1 (290g seed rate of pre-emerged seeds and top-soil covering) ≥ high sowing density 2(290g seed rate of pre-emerged seeds and none top-soil covering) > high sowing density 3(290g seed rate of iron-coated seeds and none top-soil covering). There was any statistical difference between groups in root length, leaf number, LCC, and SPAD values. Thus, a high sowing density of 290g for rice nursery seedling box was recommended to the sparse machine transplanting in rice cultivation with the none top-soil covering method, enabling convenient handling in transportation and machine transplanting work.

  • In order to estabilish a labour-saved and environmental protected paddy rice system in Southern Korea, new system, called no-tillage paddy system, was proposed and investigated from 1988 to 1996. Under the no-tillage paddy system, occurrence pattern, control value and regrowth of water foxtail each treatment(herbicides and application dates), and occurrence of volunteer rice plant in application dates of herbicide were investigated. The growth of water-foxtil was markedly increased from middle of May and no. of tillers and dry weight of water-foxtail increased up to 3rd crop year in no-tillage. Glyphosate application for control of water-foxtail was 20 days before transplanting. And when the soil under the no-tillage paddy system in May 1 and May 10 application of herbicide machine-transplanted with 8-day-old seedlings missing hills were increased compared to April 20 and early growth stages of machine transplanted of rice in April 20 applications of herbicide showed increased plant height, no. of tillers of rice, occurrence of volunteer rice plants from the shattered seeds were 1,600plants/10a and decreased in May 10 compared to April 20 and May 1.
