  • Ti-AI-Si-N coating layers were deposited on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid system of arc ion plating and sputtering techniques. The coatings were prepared with different Si contents to investigate the effect of Si content on their mechanical properties and microstructures. The dry sliding wear experiments were conducted on Ti-AI-Si-N coated WC-Co discs at constant load, 3N, and sliding speed, 0.1 m/s with two different counterpart materials such as steel ball and zirconia ball using a conventional ball-on-disc sliding wear apparatus. In the case of steel ball, the friction coefficient of Ti-AI-Si-N coating layers became lower than that of Ti-AIN coating layers. The friction coefficient decreased with increasing of Si content due to adhesive wear behavior between coating layer and steel ball. On the contrary, in the case of zirconia ball, the friction coefficient increased with increasing of Si content, indicating that abrasive wear behavior was more dominant when the coating layers slid against zirconia ball.

  • PURPOSE. This prospective clinical study was conducted to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the freely detachable zirconia ball- and spring-retained implant prosthesis (BSRP) through a comparative analysis of screw- and cement-retained implant prosthesis (SCRP). MATERIALS AND METHODS. A multi-center, randomized, prospective clinical study evaluating the clinical usefulness of the detachable zirconia ball- and spring-retained implant prostheses was conducted. Sixty-four implant prostheses in 64 patients were examined. Periodic observational studies were conducted at 0, 3, 6, and 12 months after delivery of the implant prosthesis. Factors such as implant success rate, marginal bone resorption, periodontal pocket depth, plaque and bleeding index, and prosthetic complications were evaluated, respectively. RESULTS. During the 1-year observation period, all implants survived without functional problems and clinical mobility, showing a 100% implant success rate. Marginal bone resorption was significantly higher in the SCRP group than in the BSRP group only at the time of implant prosthesis delivery (P = .043). In all observation periods, periodontal pocket depth was slightly higher in the BSRP group than in the SCRP group, but there was no significant difference (P > .05). The modified plaque index (mPI) scores of both groups were moderate. Higher ratio of a score 2 in modified sulcus bleeding index (mBI) was observed in the BSRP group in the 6- and 12-months observation. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, the newly developed zirconia ball- and spring-retained implant prosthesis could be considered as an applicable and predictable treatment method along with the existing screw- and cement-retained prosthesis.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the effect of surface conditioning on the shear bond strength of zirconium-oxide ceramic to 4 luting agents. Materials and methods: A total of 120 diskshaped zirconium-oxide ceramic blocks (3Y-TZP, Kyoritsu, Japan) were treated as follows: (1) Sandblasting with $110\;{\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide ($Al_2O_3$) particles; (2) tribochemical silica coating (Rocatec) using $110\;{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ particles modified by silica; (3) no treatment. Then zirconium-oxide ceramic blocks bonded with 4 luting cements (RelyX luting (3M ESPE), Maxcem (Kerr), Nexus3 (Kerr), Rely X Unicem (3M ESPE)). Each group was tested in shear bond strengths by UTM. A 1-way analysis of variance and 2-way analysis of variance was used to analyze the data ($\alpha$ = .05). Results: RelyX unicem in combination tribochemical silica-coating produced a highest bond strength (P < .05). Air abrasion group and Rocatec treatment groups resulted in significantly higher than no conditioning group (P < .05). RelyX Luting groups showed lower bond strength than other groups. There were significant differences among groups (P < .05). Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, RelyX Unicem cement provided the highest bond strength and Rocatec treatment enhanced the bond strength.

  • Ca or Sr-doped $PrMnO_3$ were prepared for cathode material of solid oxide fuel cell. The characteristics such as the electrical conductivity and the cathodic overpotential were investigated as to doping contents. Also the reactivity with yttria stabilized zirconia of electrolyte, and the thermal expansion coefficient were studied. The prepared perovskite powder had the mean particle size of $2{\sim}5{\mu}m$, and the particle size and the surface area was out of relation to the doping content. When Ca doping amount of electrode material was 30mol%, the electrical conductivity was the highest value of $266S{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ at $1000^{\circ}C$, and also the polarization characteristics showed the best property. The reactivity between YSZ and Ca-doped $PrMnO_3$ at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 100hours was lower than that between YSZ and Sr-doped $PrMnO_3$. The thermal expansion coefficient of $Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ was $1.19{\times}10^{-5}K^{-1}$ in the temperature range of $300{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$, and this value was similar to that of YSZ, $1.15{\times}10^{-5}K^{-1}$.

  • The effects of particle size distribution have been investigated on the high frequency low loss Mn-Zn fer-rites. The particle size distribution was controlled by milling time. Zirconia ball and engineering plastic jar were employed to avoid iron contamination from the milling media. As increasing the milling time BET value was increased from 0.55 to 3.21m2/g and mean particle size was decreased from 2.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 1.0$\mu\textrm{m}$ The large specific surface area of initial powder resulted in the high density of sintered core. However starting powders with high BET lead to inhomogeneous grain growth as well as poor electromagnetic pro-perties at sintering temperature above 1300$^{\circ}C$.

  • A new process of emulsiion-spray pyrolysis for synthesizing ceramic powders was developed and the characteristics of Al2O3-20w/o ZrO2 composite powders prepared by this method were investigated. The composite powders synthesized in this study were spherical dense particles with 0.1~0.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of diameter. As found in powders derived by the emulsion-hot kerosene drying method, all zirconia in Al2O3-20w/o ZrO2 powders heat-treated at 120$0^{\circ}C$ was in the tetragonal form at room temperature. The relative density and the fracture toughness of composites sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs were 95% and 5.2MPa.m1/2, respectively.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of high speed grinding and the influence of wheel surface speed V and a grindability of the grinding materials. The various fine ceramics pieces was ground by metal and vitrified bonded diamond wheel. The surface roughness of fine ceramics(Zirconia($ZrO_2$), Silicon Carbide(SiC), Silicon Nitride($Si_3N_4$), Alumina($Al_2O_3$)) decreases from $0.05{\mu}m(R_{max})$ to $0.025{\mu}m(R_{max})$ when the wheel speed at grinding point increases the wheel speed. Relation between the temperature at grinding point and surface roughness was linear. Abrasive jet machining(AJM), a specialized from of shot blasting, is considered one of the most helpful micro machining methods for hard and brittle materials such as glasses and ceramics by constant pressure grinding.

  • State of problem : The use of zirconium oxide all-ceramic material provides several advantages, including a high flexural strength(>1000MPa) and desirable optical properties, such as shading adaptation to the basic shades and a reduction in the layer thickness. Along with the strength of the materials, the cementation technique is also important to the clinical success of a restoration. Nevertheless, little information is available on the effect of different surface treatments on the bonding of zirconium high-crystalline ceramics and resin luting agents. Purpose : The aim of this study was to test the effects of surface treatments of zirconium on shear bond strengths between bovine teeth and a zirconia ceramic and evaluate differences among cements Material and methods : 54 sound bovine teeth extracted within a 1 months, were used. They were frozen in distilled water. These were rinsed by tap water to confirm that no granulation tissues have left. These were kept refrigerated at $4^{\circ}C$ until tested. Each tooth was placed horizontally at a plastic cylinder (diameter 20mm), and embedded in epoxy resin. Teeth were sectioned with diamond burs to expose dentin and grinded with #600 silicon carbide paper. To make sure there was no enamel left, each was observed under an optical microscope. 54 prefabricated zirconium oxide ceramic copings(Lava, 3M ESPE, USA) were assigned into 3 groups ; control, airborne-abraded with $110{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ and scratched with diamond burs at 4 directions. They were cemented with a seating force of 10 ㎏ per tooth, using resin luting cement(Panavia $F^{(R)}$), resin cement(Superbond $C&B^{(R)}$), and resin modified GI cement(Rely X $Luting^{(R)}$). Those were thermocycled at $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ for 5000 cycles with a 30 second dwell time, and then shear bond strength was determined in a universal test machine(Model 4200, Instron Co., Canton, USA). The crosshead speed was 1 mm/min. The result was analyzed with one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and the Tukey test at a significance level of P<0.05. Results : Superbond $C&B^{(R)}$ at scratching with diamond burs showed the highest shear bond strength than others (p<.05). For Panavia $F^{(R)}$, groups of scratching and sandblasting showed significantly higher shear bond strength than control group(p<.05). For Rely X $Luting^{(R)}$, only between scratching & control group, significantly different shear bond strength was observed(p<.05). Conclusion : Within the limitation of this study, Superbond $C&B^{(R)}$ showed clinically acceptable shear bond between bovine teeth & zirconia ceramics regardless of surface treatments. For the surface treatment, scratching increased shear bond strength. Increase of shear bond strength by sandblasting with $110{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ was not statistically different.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate effect of specimen preparation method on the microtensile bond strength of veneering ceramic to zirconia core. Materials and methods: Cylindrical Lava zirconia block (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) was cut into discs using a diamond disc. After sintering, the core specimens were placed in an adjustable mold and veneered with Lava ceram (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany). The disc shaped specimen of group 1 was cut into microbars ($1{\times}1{\times}7\;mm^3$) using a low speed diamond disc under water cooling (n = 15). The specimen of group 2 was cut into microbars ($1.2{\times}1.2{\times}7\;mm^3$) in the same way. Whereafter the microbars were trimmed ($1{\times}1{\times}7\;mm^3$) using a thick diamond disc under water cooling (n = 15). The microtensile bond strength was tested in a microtensile tester (Instron 8848, $Instron^{(R)}$ Co., Norwood, USA). Fractured microtensile specimens were analyzed under a stereomicroscope (MZ6, Leica Microsystems GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) at magnification ${\times}30$. Results: The microtensile bond strength of group 1 ($28.8{\pm}7.0\;MPa$) was significantly higher than group 2 ($11.0{\pm}33\;MPa$) (P=.00). Conclusion: It appears advisable to avoid the trimming action, especially high strength ceramic specimens.

  • An yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) thin film on a porous NiO-YSZ substrate for an anode support type solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) was prepared by an electrophoretic deposition(EPD). Deposition condition and film properties in order to obtain the homogeneous YSZ thin film from the EPD solution with different polarity were studied. In different case of alcohol solution, hydrogen gas was produced in aqueous solution from the electrolyte reaction under constant current above 0.138 mA /$\textrm{cm}^2$.Its reaction generated the bubble-formed defect in the deposited film and decreased weight of the film. The homogeneous YSZ thin film was formed in alcohol solution at a constant current, 0.035 mA /$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 s.
