  • In the partial lubrication regime, the roughness effects are most important due to the presence of interacting asperities. An average Reynolds equation using flow factors is very useful to determine effects of surface roughness on partial lubrication. In this paper, the pressure flow factors for Gaussian and non-Gaussian surfaces are evaluated in terms of kurtosis. The effect of kurtosis on pressure flow factor is investigated using random rough surface generated numerically. The pressure flow factor increases with increasing kurtosis in partial lubrication regime(h/$\sigma$<3). As h/$\sigma$increases, the pressure flow factor approach to 1 asymptotically regardless of kurtosis.

  • A minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) machining is able to achieve both functions of cooling and lubrication with an extremely low quantity of a cutting fluid and a large amount of air blow. Using a biodegradable ester oil, turning tests were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the MQL system. It was found that the performance of MQL cutting was equivalent to, or better than, that of conventional cutting, because the MQL system tends to prevent the heat damage of the tool tip and, if an effective lubricant such as a particular polyol ester is applied to the system, it can avoid the extensive transfer of workpiece materials on to the tool surface.

  • The rolling piston type rotary compressor has been widely used for refrigeration and air-conditioning systems due to its compactness and high-speed operation. The present analysis is part of a research program directed toward maximizing the advantages of refrigerant compressors. The study of lubrication characteristics in the critical sliding component is essential for the design of refrigerant compressors. Therefore, theoretical investigation of the lubrication characteristics of a rotary compressor being used for refrigeration and air-conditioning systems was investigated. The Newton-Raphson method was used for a partial elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis between the vane and the rolling piston of a rotary compressor. The results demonstrated that the vane thickness and the center line position of the vane significantly influenced the friction force and the energy loss between the vane and the rolling piston.

  • The emulsion lubrication is expected to get the effects of cooling and lubrication in metal cutting. The purpose of this research was to investigate the lubrication characteristics of the emulsion in a region of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication by experiments using o/w type emulsion lubrication. With the line contact frictional experiment apparatus which is the model of a rolling mechanism, friction coefficient, and oil film thickness were measured. By analyzing these experimental data with the variables of emulsion concentration, load, and rolling velocity, the following results are obtained. Emulsion viscosity $\eta$ for the concentration and pressure can be calculated by the following equation $\eta=\eta_o e^{\alphap}\cdot e^{\beta \phi}$. Where $\beta = (-3.7242+\phi)/\phi, 5%\leq \phi \leq 15%$.

  • Surrface texturing of tribological application is another attractive technology of friction reducing. Also, reduction of friction is therefore considered to be a necessary requirement for improved efficiency of machine. In this paper attempts to investigate the effect of density for micro-scale dimple pattern using photolithography on bearing steel flat mated with pin-on-disk. We demonstrated the lubrication mechanism for a Stribeck curve, which has a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for lubrication condition. It is found that friction coefficient is depended on the density of surface pattern. It was thus verified that micro-scale dimple could affect the friction reduction considerably under mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication conditions from based on friction map. Lubrication condition regime has an influence on the friction coefficient induced the density of micro dimple.

  • For cam and roller-follower contacting surfaces, the effect of tangential loading on the subsurface stress field at an elaso-hydrodynamic lubrication condition has been studied numerically. As tangential load increases, the subsurface stress field extended more widely to the direction of the tangential load. The positions of the maximum shear stress and the maximum effective stress are getting closer to the surface with the increasing tangential load. The tangential load at the elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication condition is of little consequence to the subsurface stress field.

  • An elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis was performed on the contacting teeth surfaces of involute spur gears. Kinematics of the gear and the pinion were taken into account to get accurate geometric clearances around the elastohydrodynamic lubrication region of the contacting teeth. Pressure and film thickness distribution for the whole contacting faces in lubricated condition at several time steps were obtained through the analysis. Besides the pressure spike at the outlet region, a representative phenomenon in elastohydrodynamic lubrication regime, the pressure at the inlet region was slightly higher than that of the center region. The film thickness of transient condition was thicker than that of steady condition.

  • The reduction of $CO_2$ emissions has been a key target in the Marine Industry since the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee published its findings in 2009. The representative emission index is termed as the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) for the new ships. Among various flow control techniques ever proposed, the air lubrication method is the one of most promising one in terms of practical applicability. The present study examines the basic characteristics of the flat plate test with intention of applying the air lubrication technology to the reduction of the resistance of a ship. Image analysis technique is proposed as a tool to quantify the effectiveness of the air lubrication method.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the friction characteristics of piston assembly. The friction of piston assembly is composed of ring pack and skirt friction. In this paper, the theoretical models of piston ring pack and piston skirt were presented. The mixed lubrication theory was considered to calculate friction force of piston ring and skirt. from the results, most of friction in piston assembly occurred at the piston ring park. The piston assembly usually showed hydrodynamic lubrication characteristics. but the top and bottom dead centers showed mixed lubrication characteristics. The piston skirt was much affected by radial clearance and load, but ring was significantly influenced by ring tension.

  • Recently, a high speed cutting is essential requirement to satisfy latest demand of high precision product and machining of hard materials. However heat generation by high speed rotation causes many problems. The machining error and shortening spindle lifetime by thermal stress is typical example. Generation of heat is mostly caused by sliding at the rotor and bearing. For minimization of heat generation at bearing, decision of the condition of proper lubrication is necessary. The thermal study about 40,000rpm spindle by changing the condition of oil-air lubrication method is carried out in this paper. The results of this paper can be used effectively in the decision of oil-air lubrication condition of other types of spindle for machine tools.
