Monitoring of petroleum hydrocarbon degradative potential of indigenous microorganisms in ozonated soil

  • Diesel-contaminated soils were ozonated for different times (0 - 900 min) and incubated for 9 wk to monitor petroleum hydrocarbons (PH)-degradative potential of indigenous microorganisms in the soils. Increased ozonation time decreased not only concentration of PH but also number of microorganisms in the soils. Microorganisms in the ozonated soils increased during 9-wk incubation as monitored by culture- and nonculture-based methods. Higher (1-2 orders of magnitude) cell number was observed by quantitative analysis of soil DNA using probes detecting genes encoding 165 rRNA(rrn), naphthalene dioxygenase (nahA), toluene dioxygenase (todC), and alkane hydroxylase (alkB) than microbial abundance estimated by culture-based methods. Such PH-degraders were relatively a few or under detection limit in 900-min ozonated soil. Further PH-removal observed during the incubation period supported the presence of PH-degraders in ozonated soils. Highest reduction (25.4%) of total PH (TPH) was observed in 180-min ozonated soil white negligible reduction was shown in 900-min ozonated soil during the period, resulting in lowest TPH-concentration in 180-min ozonated soil among the ozonated soils. Microbial community composition in 9-wk incubated soils revealed slight difference between 900-min ozonated and unozonated soils as analyzed by whole cell hybridization using group-specific rRNA-targeted oligonucleotides. Results of this study suggest that appropriate ozonation and subsequent biodegradation by indigenous microorganisms may be a cost-effective and successful remediation strategy for PH-contaminated soils.

Implementation of Multilevel Boost DC-Link Cascade based Reversing Voltage Inverter for Low THD Operation

  • In this paper, configuration of $1-{\phi}$ seven-level boost DC-link cascade based reversing voltage multilevel inverter (BDCLCRV MLI) is proposed for uninterrupted power supply (UPS) applications. It consists of three level boost converter, level generation unit and full bridge circuit for polarity generation. When compared with conventional boost cascaded H-bridge MLI configurations, the proposed system results in reduction of DC sources, reduced power switches and gate drive requirements. Inverter switching is accomplished by providing appropriate switching angles that is generated by any optimization switching angle techniques. Here, round modulation control (RMC) method is taken as the optimization method and switching angles are derived and the same is compared with various switching angles methods i.e., equal-phase (EP) method, and half-equal-phase (HEP) method which results in improved quality of obtained AC power with lowest total harmonic distortion (THD). Reduction in DC sources and switch count makes the system more cost effective. A simulation and prototype model of $1-{\phi}$ seven-level BDCLCRV MLI system is developed and its performance is analyzed for various operating conditions.

The Overall Performance Improvement of Microbial Fuel Cells Connected in Series with Dairy Wastewater Treatment

  • To improve the potential of single chamber microbial fuel cells (SCMFCs) as an applicable technology, the main challenge is a practical application for larger scales bioenergy production from potent exoelectrogenic microorganism with real dairy wastewater. To increase power generation, three individual MFCs were together operated in series best under the fed batch condition for 15 days. The volume of MFC 1 and MFC 2 is "300 mL" and MFC 3 is "500 mL" respectively. The individual MFCs 1, MFC 2 and MFC 3 gives an open circuit voltage of 0.60 V, 0.66 V and 0.55 V and result in total working voltage when connected in series of 1.745V, which lead an LED to glow. The maximum power densities obtained from MFC 1, MFC 2 and MFC 3 are 62 mW/㎡, 50 mW/㎡ and 45 mW/㎡ (normalized to the surface area of the anodic electrode, which was 50 ㎠ for all three MFCs), and corresponding to current densities of 141 mA/㎡, 155 mA/㎡ and 123 mA/㎡, respectively. Therefore this work suggests the cheapest way to connect microbial fuel cells in series to gain power with the lowest operating cost and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal.

LCC 기법을 통한 가축분뇨처리시설의 경제성 분석 (Economic Analysis of the Livestock Manure Treatment System Using Life-Cycle Cost Technique)

  • 본 연구는 가축분뇨 처리시설의 평가 및 최적 선택의 의사결정에 있어서, 시설물은 내구성이 있는 자산이므로 내용연수 전 기간에 걸친 비용측면에서의 경제성이 고려되어야 하는 바, 이를 위하여 LCC (Life Cycle Cost) 기법의 적용 가능성을 검토하고자 수행하였다. 경제성의 비교 분석을 위해 양돈 분뇨 1일 100톤 처리규모의 공동자원화시설 설치 공법들 중 4개 공법에 대한 시설투자 및 연간 운영비를 조사하였는데, 초기 투자비는 2,699~3,202 백만원 수준으로 T 공법이 가장 높았고 E 공법이 가장 낮았다. 연간 운영비에 있어서는 378~498 백만원 수준으로 T 공법, J 공법, E 공법, B 공법 순으로 유리한 것으로 조사되었다. LCC 분석을 위해 한국은행 및 통계청의 10년간 ('00~'09) 자료를 이용하여 이자율 (4.7%), 물가상승율 (3.13%), 실질 할인율 (1.52%)를 기준하고, 현가계수 산정을 위해 내용연수를 토목 건축 (30년), 기계 (10년), 전기계장 (15년) 으로 기준하였다. 이를 바탕으로 한 분석 결과, 톤당 운영비로 보면 17,570~18,998원/톤 수준으로서 E공법이 17,570원/톤으로 가장 낮은 반면, B 공법이 20,661원/톤으로 가장 높아 상대적으로 가장 비경제적이었다. 특히 초기투자비가 높더라도 연간 운영비가 낮은 T 공법이 초기투자비는 T 공법보다 낮으나 연간 운영비가 상대적으로 높은 B 공법에 비해 LCC가 낮게 평가되었다. 따라서 가축분뇨 처리시설의 경제적 측면에서의 공법 선택에 있어서는 초기시설투자비 또는 연간 운영비 중 어느 한쪽만 평가하여 결정하기 보다는 LCC 분석을 적용하여 평가하는 것이 합리적임을 알 수 있다. 또한 경제성 분석에 있어서, 불확실성에 따른 LCC 분석 결과의 변화를 파악하기 위해 '00~'09년 간의 할인율 변동폭을 적용하여 민감도분석을 실시한 결과, 변동범위 안에서 변화하더라도 각 대안별 비용우위에 대한 변화는 달라지지 않아 안정적이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 LCC를 이용한 경제성 평가는 가축분뇨 처리시설의 선택을 위한 의사결정에 유용한 평가 지표가 될 수 있으리라 판단된다. 향후 분석의 신뢰성 제고와 활성화를 위해서는 각 비용요소들에 대해 공신력 있는 데이터베이스 구축이 대단히 중요하며, 아울러 시설평가 시 정성적인 요인도 고려할 수 있는 연구가 추가적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.

무선 ATM 망에서 이동성 지원을 위한 위치 등록기의 논리적 계층 구조 (A Logical Hierarchy Architecture of Location Registers for Supporting Mobility in Wireless ATM Networks)

  • 본 논문에서는 PNNI(Private Network to Network Interface) 기반의 무선 ATM 망에서 단말의 이동성을 보장하기 위해 기존의 위치 등록기 구조를 개선하고자 한다. 기존의 위치 등록기 구조는 위치 등록기를 물리적 계층으로 배치함으로 인해 다수의 데이터베이스가 요구되고, 데이터베이스 액세스 회수와 신호 트래픽 및 호 설정 지연 등이 증가하는 문제점을 갖고 있었다. 이 문제점을 보완하기 위해 본 논문에서는 논리적 계층 형태로 이루어진 위치 등록기 구조를 제시하고자 한다. 제안된 논리적 계층 구조에서는 위치 등록기를 논리적인 그룹으로 묶고, 이 그룹들을 다시 그룹으로 묶어서 위치 등록기의 논리적인 트리 형태로 만들어 상위 레벨의 위치 등록기의 역할을 하위 레벨의 위치 등록기 중 하나가 수행하도록 하고 있다. 기존의 위치 등록기 구조와 성능을 비교한 결과에서 제안된 논리적 계층 구조는 데이터베이스 수와 위치 관리비용 측면에서 우수한 성능을 보여주고 있다.

국내 염증성장질환의 약물치료 및 약제비 현황: 2010-2014 국민건강보험자료 활용 연구 (Medication Use and Drug Expenditure in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: based on Korean National Health Insurance Claims Data (2010-2014))

  • Backgrounds: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) increased prevalence and economic burden. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate drug use pattern in IBD patients in a real world. Methods: National Health Insurance claim data from 2010 to 2014 were used in this population-based study. All IBD patients diagnosed during study period were enrolled. IBD medications included 5-aminosalicylic acid (ASA), glucocorticoid, immunomodulator and anti-tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ agent(anti TNF-${\alpha}$). Growth rate of IBD prevalence, prescribed drug classes, duration of drug therapy and medication cost were analyzed. Number and percentage of patients for categorical variables, and mean and median for continuous variables were presented. Results: Total numbers of patients were 131,158 and 57,286 during 5 years, and their annual growth rate were 3.2 and 5.7% for UC and CD. UC and CD were prevalent in the 40-50 (41.2%) and 20-30 age groups (36.0%). About 60% of IBD patients was prescribed any of medications. 5-ASA was the most frequently prescribed, followed by corticosteroid and immunomodulator. Anti TNF-${\alpha}$ use was the lowest, but 5 times higher than UC in CD. Combination therapies with different class of drugs were in 29% for UC and 62% for CD. Mean prescription days per patient per year were 306 and 378, and the median medication cost per patient per year was KRW 420,000 (USD 383) and KRW 830,000 (USD755), for UC and CD, respectively. Conclusions: Increasing prevalence of IBD requires further studies to contribute to achieve better clinical outcomes of drug therapy.

슬러지 농도 최적화에 따른 합리적인 활성슬러지공정 설계방안 연구 (Economic Design of Activated Sludge System at the Optimum Sludge Concentration)

  • 활성슬러지 공정의 생물학적 반응조 및 2차 침전지 설계와 관련해서 정상상태 설계식(Ekama et al., 1986; WRC, 1984) 및 1-D flux theory 설계식(Ekama et al., 1997)을 사용하여 슬러지 농도에 따라 두 가지 공정을 일괄적으로 설계하였다. 또한, 슬러지 농도에 따른 생물학적 반응조 및 2차 침전지 크기 변화를 도식화하고, 유입수 성상이나 슬러지 침강성, 환경 및 운전조건 그리고 첨두유량이 각 공정의 크기결정에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. 먼저유입수의 특성과 관련하여 난분해성 용해성 물질(fs,us)은 반응조 크기 결정에 큰 영향이 없었지만, 난분해성 입자성 물질(fs,up), 무기고형물(fi) 및 유기물 강도(Sti)의 영향은 크게 나타났다. 운전인자인 Sludge Retention Time (SRT)의 경우, 슬러지 생산량과 관련되므로 반응조 크기결정에 역시 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 2차 침전지의 설계요소인 Sludge Volume Index (SVI) 및 첨두유량이 커질수록 2차 침전지에 수리학적 부하가 커지게 되어, 2차 침전지가 크게 설계되어야 했다. 본 설계과정에서는, 온도 변화가 미치는 영향은 작게 나타났다. 대규모 처리장의 경우 반응조 및 2차 침전지 전체 크기 결정과 함께 1개조 크기의 상한선을 설정하여 개수를 산정하였다. 최종적으로 엔지니어는 여러 가지 슬러지 농도에 대하여 반응조 및 2차 침전조의 크기, 개수 및 현장조건을 고려한 건설비용을 반복적으로 계산하게 되면, 최소비용 설계와 함께 최적의 슬러지 농도를 결정하게 된다.

벼논에서 자동 챔버와 수동 챔버를 이용한 CH4 배출량 비교 (Comparison of CH4 Emission between Auto Chamber and Manual Chamber in the Rice Paddy)

  • The chamber method is widely used for measuring methane emission from paddy rice fields. The closed static chamber has advantages of easy installation and removal in the field and low manufacturing cost. However, the manual chamber method requires a lot of labor and has a limited sampling time and frequency. To overcome the disadvantages of the manual chamber, the auto-chamber system is used for measuring methane emission. We compared the differences in methane flux between the auto-chamber and manual chamber. To investigate methane emissions by the two methods, a chamber was installed for each of the following treatments : control without rice straw (NA), spring plowing after autumn rice straw application (SPRA) and autumn plowing after autumn rice straw application (APRA). The total methane emission was lowest in the control and highest in APRA with both methods. There was no significant difference in total methane emission between the methods, but dynamic fluctuation in methane with temperature change was accurately measured in the auto-chamber. Measuring methane emission with an auto-chamber system is expected to reduce uncertainty and increase accuracy, accompanied by labor reduction.

Accuracy of genotype imputation based on reference population size and marker density in Hanwoo cattle

  • Recently, the cattle genome sequence has been completed, followed by developing a commercial single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip panel in the animal genome industry. In order to increase statistical power for detecting quantitative trait locus (QTL), a number of animals should be genotyped. However, a high-density chip for many animals would be increasing the genotyping cost. Therefore, statistical inference of genotype imputation (low-density chip to high-density) will be useful in the animal industry. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the reference population size and marker density on the imputation accuracy and to suggest the appropriate number of reference population sets for the imputation in Hanwoo cattle. A total of 3,821 Hanwoo cattle were divided into reference and validation populations. The reference sets consisted of 50k (38,916) marker data and different population sizes (500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, and 3,600). The validation sets consisted of four validation sets (Total 889) and the different marker density (5k [5,000], 10k [10,000], and 15k [15,000]). The accuracy of imputation was calculated by direct comparison of the true genotype and the imputed genotype. In conclusion, when the lowest marker density (5k) was used in the validation set, according to the reference population size, the imputation accuracy was 0.793 to 0.929. On the other hand, when the highest marker density (15k), according to the reference population size, the imputation accuracy was 0.904 to 0.967. Moreover, the reference population size should be more than 1,000 to obtain at least 88% imputation accuracy in Hanwoo cattle.

치매노인 가족부양자의 대처방법에 관한 연구 (A Study on a Coping Method of the Family Caregivers of Demented Patients)

  • This was a descriptive study designed to identify the level of coping method and its influencing factors on the family caregivers of demented patients, and resolve the family caregivers' level of stress. The data were collected from September 10 to October 10, 2001. Subjects for this study were recruited from four clinics, which were chosen from 15 clinics located in Chunbuk-Do as the study sites because of their cooperation for the study. They were similar in terms of size, the characteristics of the local community. and the population and registration status of the demented patients. The instruments used for the study were as follows: 1. Problematic behaviors of demented patients are measured by the Memory and Behavior Problem Checklist (Zarit, 1980), and the Linguistic Communication Symptoms Questionnaire (Bayles and Tomoeda, 1991) 2. The ability to carry out daily activities was measured using the Barthel Index (1965) and Katz Index (1963), which as well-known ADL assessment methods. 3. Burden was measured using Cost of Care Index by the Kosberg and Cairl (1986). 4. Coping strategy was measured Bell's 18 methods (1977). The data were analyzed using SPSS/PC. The study results were as follows: 1. The total stress score was 2.90 out of a maximum score of 5. The highest score reported was 3.09 on the dimension of restriction of individual and social activities, and the lowest region reported was 2.58 on the dimension of mental and physical health. 2. The total score of the coping method was 2.65 out of a maximum score of 5. The highest score reported was 4.01 on the dimension of thinking that includes an ideation such that it is better than any possible worst case, and the lowest score reported was 1.45 on the dimension of the self-image as a scapegoat. 3. There were significant differences in coping method among the subjects by age (F=2.752 p=0.04), caregiver (F=4.33 p=0.003), care-giving period (F=2.68 p=0.049), and dementia stage (F=2.87 p=0.034). 4. There were highly negative correlations ($\gamma$=-0.301 p=0.000) between problematic behaviors of demented patients and the coping method of their family caregivers. The highest correlation coefficient ($\gamma$=-0.339 p=0.000) was found between aggressive behaviors of the demented patients and the coping method of their family caregivers. 5. There was a low negative correlation ($\gamma$=-0.201 p=0.019) between the ADL of the demented patients and the coping method of their family caregivers. 6. There were highly negative correlations ($\gamma$=-0.213 p=0.005) between stress and the coping method of the family caregivers. The highest correlation was found between financial burden ($\gamma$=-.327 P=.000) and the coping method of the family caregivers. There was no significant correlation among unpleasant aspects of the demented patients, willingness to the demented patients, and the coping method of the family caregivers.
