This study employs Bayesian multiple regression analysis using the ordinary least squares method for regional low flow frequency analysis. The parameter estimates using the Bayesian multiple regression analysis were compared to conventional analysis using the t-distribution. In these comparisons, the mean values from the t-distribution and the Bayesian analysis at each return period are not significantly different. However, the difference between upper and lower limits is remarkably reduced using the Bayesian multiple regression. Therefore, from the point of view of uncertainty analysis, Bayesian multiple regression analysis is more attractive than the conventional method based on a t-distribution because the low flow sample size at the site of interest is typically insufficient to perform low flow frequency analysis. Also, we performed low flow prediction, including confidence interval, at two ungauged catchments in the Nakdong River basin using the developed Bayesian multiple regression model. The Bayesian prediction proves effective to infer the low flow characteristic at the ungauged catchment.
Despite a number of studies on consolidation behavior that have been carried out in the Nakdong River estuary in Busan, these are focused on the prediction of final settlement during ground improvement process, and there is almost no research on the long-term settlement occurring after that. For the practical study on the long-term settlement, the field monitored settlement data that measured over 10 years in the Busan new port facilities area were used, and the final settlement and predicted time-settlement line were constituted by hyperbolic function. As a result, the measured settlements depend on the thickness of clayey soils, and the pattern were similar to each other and good agreement with the predicted time-settlement line using hyperbolic method. Also, the settlement in the lower non-improved layer occupied 62-76% of total settlement. Information about above results would be quite helpful to understand the long-term settlement behaviors as well as the non-improved layer's settlement is more careful consideration needed at design phase.
To restore the ecological function of contaminated soil and maximize the ecological services provided by the soil, besides the toxicity orrisk caused by pollutants, the functional aspects of the soil ecosystem should be considered. In this study, a method for evaluating the health of cleaned soil was presented, and the applicability of the proposed evaluation method was examined by applying it to soil treated with washing and landfarming. Productivity, habitat, water retention capacity, nutrient cycling, carbon retention capacity, and buffering capacity were used as soil health evaluation indicators. The results showed that the soil health was not completely recovered after remediation, and even in the case of the washed soil, the health was lower than before remediation. On the other hand, there was no significant change in soil quality due to oil pollution, but soil health deteriorated. Unlike the slightly improved soil quality after landfarming treatment, soil health was not completely restored. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that it is desirable to consider both soil quality and health when evaluating the remediation effect. The soil health evaluation method proposed in this study can be usefully utilized for the sustainable use of cleaned soil and to promote ecosystem services.
In this study, physical property tests and standard consolidation tests were conducted on the marine clay of Busan New Port and North Port, the middle and lower reaches of the Nakdong River including Gimhae and Yangsan, and Ulsan regions. The moisture content, a property unrelated to sample disturbance with small individual test errors, was used for regression analysis with the compression index, virgin compression index, consolidation coefficient, expansion index, and secondary compression index, among others. Subsequently, the correlation and accuracy were evaluated. Upon analyzing the correlation between the moisture content, void ratio, and liquid limit commonly used physical properties for calculating compression indexes, it was confirmed that the liquid limit had the lowest correlation. Through a linear regression analysis of the consolidation constants using the current moisture content in the natural state, a high correlation was demonstrated. Relationship equations were then presented to determine settlement and settlement time. This study suggests that moisture content can be utilized as an alternative for evaluating and calculating consolidation constants when examining ground settlement in sedimentary clays distributed in the Busan and Gyeongnam regions.
Hwabuk Dam has been under construction to reduce flood damage in Nakdong River watershed and to supply stable water for middle area of Gyeongbuk Province. Therefore, fish investigation in up and downstream of the dam was conducted from 2004 to 2008 in order to determine any negative effect on fish community due to dam construction and to use as fundamental data for conserving species diversity and maintaining stream health. According to data analysis on water quality, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, suspended solids, and total E-coli had seasonal variation, but they did not significantly differ in sites. However, biological and chemical oxygen demand, chlorophyll-a, nitrogen, and phosphorus representing organic matter and nutrient concentration were higher in upper site and decreased to lower site so that they differed by site. Concentration of arsenic among the heavy metals was less than 0.05 mg $L^{-1}$, which is regulated for protection of human health in water quality standard, except for 0.092 mg $L^{-1}$ in June 2005. During the study period, the total number of fish caught from the 6 sites was 10,263 representing 7 families 19 species. Among them, dominant and subdominant species were Korean chub (Zacco koreanus, 62.5%) and Chinese minnow (Rhynchocypris oxycephalus, 10.6%) which inhabit mostly in mid and upper streams, Korea. Among the 19 species, Korean endemic species were 9 species (47.4%) including Korean slender gudgeon (Squalidus gracilis majimae), Korean dark sleeper (Odontobutis platycephala), and Korean shiner (Coreoleuciscus splendidus). There was several individuals of the $1^{st}$-class endangered species, Naktong nose loach (Koreocobitis nahtongensis), caught in 2005${\sim}$2007, and no introduced species of fish was found in entire sampling period. According to result of community analysis, dominance index decreased toward lower site, but diversity and richness indices increased toward lower site. The equation of length-weight relationship on the dominant species was TW=0.000003$(TL)^{3.2603}$. The parameter b in the equation was greater than 3.0 indicating good nutritional condition in the populations. Compared to populations of Korean chub in other streams, the population in Hwabuk Dam watershed had higher mean of condition factor by size indicating better growth rate. With fish fauna and multi-metric health assessment model in each sampling attempt, index of biotic integrity (IBI) was evaluated and it resulted mostly in good (26${\sim}$35) and excellent (36${\sim}$40) condition in all sites, and the mean of IBI was the highest in site 5. The results indicate that it is very important to study not only environmental impact assessment with fish composition but also stream health assessment in order to conserve healthy aquatic ecosystem.

The formation characteristics of $BDOC_{rapid}$ and $BDOC_{slow}$ with different ozone dosages for 3 different kinds of waters from Maeri raw water in the down stream of Nakdong river, Hoidong reservoir water in Busan City and treated Maeri raw water(sand filtered) has been investigated in this study. The ozone dosages for producing maximum $BDOC_{total}$ in the Maeri raw water, Hoidong reservoir water and sand filtered water of Maeri were 0.9, 1.1 and 1.4 $mgO_3$/mgDOC respectively. It could be concluded that the ozone dosages for formations of maximum $BDOC_{total}$ were determined by characteristics of water. The ozone dosages for producing maximum $BDOC_{rapid}$ in the Maeri raw water, Hoidong reservoir water and sand filtered water of Maeri were 0.9, 0.9 and 1.0 $mgO_3$/mgDOC respectively that were same or lower than the used ozone dosages for producing maximum $BDOC_{total}$. $BDOC_{slow}$ was being formated and increased continuously with the higher ozone dosages which were the used ozone dosages for maximum formation of $BDOC_{total}$ and $BDOC_{rapid}$. For the best results of a pre-treatment of biofiltration, the optimum ozone dosage ranges in formation of $BDOC_{rapid}/BDOC_{total}$ were $0.6{\sim}1.0\;mgO_3$/mgDOC that were lower than the ozone dosage ranges of $0.9{\sim}1.4\;mgO_3$/mgDOC for the maximum formation $BDOC_{total}$. The reported results indicated that the best and effective ways from economic and technical points of view to determine the optimum ozone dosages of the pretreatment of biofilteration process were investigating and classifying BDOC.

Unpleasant tastes and odors in drinking water cause same problems for water utilities across Korea. Even though tastes and odors do not create health problems, they are main concerns for consumers who determine the safety of their drinking water. In this study, two different odor producing compounds(geosmin 2-MIB) in the Nakdong river water and rapid sand filtered rater were treated by advanced oxidation of $O_3/H_2O_2$ process. The experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of geosmin with the use of 5 mg/L of $O_3$ and $H_2O_2$ was higher than efficiency with the use of $O_3$ alone for both the raw water and the sand filtered water. And in general, the removal efficiency of geosmin was higher than 2-MIB in the sand filtered water. Under the range of $O_3$ concentration $0.5\sim2.0$ mg/L, the removal rate constants(k) of geosmin for the raw and sand filtered waters, and the one of 2-MIB in the sand filtered water were increased rapidly as doses of $O_3$, and $H_2O_2$, increased. The removal rate constants(k) do not increase any more when $H_2O_2/O_3$ ratio increases above the optimum ratio. The optimum ratio of $H_2O_2/O_3$, dose was $1.0\sim2.0$ for both geosmin and 2-MIB. The removal rate constant(k) becomes lower when OH radical consuming materials are present in raw water. The half-life of geosmin decreased rapidly as the $O_3$ and $H_2O_2$ doses increase in the sand filtered water. The half life decreased about 8.5 times with the use of 2 mg/L of $O_3$ and 10 mg/L of $H_2O_2$ than with the use of 2 mg/L of $O_3$ alone for the sand filtered water.

In this study, five different odor causing compounds in the Nakdong river and rapid sand filtered waters were treated by oxidation from $O_3/H_2O_2$ process. In addition, the change in BDOC formation by the $O_3/H_2O_2$ process was also investigated for considering this advanced oxidation Process as a pre-treatment to the BAC treatment process. The experimental result showed that the removal efficiency of geosmin was higher with the use of 5 mg/L of $O_3$ and 0.2 mg/L of $H_2O_2$ than with the use of 20 mg/L of $O_3$ alone for the sand filtered water. And in general, the removal efficiency of geosmin in raw water was $12{\sim}27%$ lower than the one in sand filtered water. In sand filtered water. the removal efficiencies of geosmin and IPMP decreased when $H_2O_2/O_3$ ratio increases above the optimum ratio. The optimum ratio of $H_2O_2/O_3$ dose was $0.5{\sim}1.0$ for geosmin and $0.2{\sim}1.0$ for IPMP. However, the optimum ratio of $H_2O_2/O_3$ in raw water remove geosmin appealed to $1.0{\sim}3.0$. According to the experimental results for the removal of 5 different odor causing compounds under varied $O_3$ doses, the removal efficiency of IPMP was the highest with 60% and, in overall, $O_3/H_2O_2$ process showed higher removal efficiency than $O_3$ alone process. The BDOC formation by the $O_3/H_2O_2$ process increased from $0.1{\sim}0.25$ to $0.19{\sim}0.34$ comparing to $O_3$ process alone. Therefore, it is concluded that the advanced oxidation process with $O_3/H_2O_2$ can be used as a pretreatment to the BAC treatment process.

The accurate simulation of micro-scale weather phenomena such as fog using the mesoscale meteorological models is a very complex task. Especially, the uncertainty arisen from initial input data of the numerical models has a decisive effect on the accuracy of numerical models. The data assimilation is required to reduce the uncertainty of initial input data. In this study, the limitation of the mesoscale meteorological model was verified by WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model for a summer fog event around the Nakdong river in Korea. The sensitivity analyses of simulation accuracy from the numerical model were conducted using two different initial and boundary conditions: KLAPS (Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System) and LDAPS (Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System) data. In addition, the improvement of numerical model performance by FDDA (Four-Dimensional Data Assimilation) using the observational data from AWS (Automatic Weather System) was investigated. The result of sensitivity analysis showed that the accuracy of simulated air temperature, dew point temperature, and relative humidity with LDAPS data was higher than those of KLAPS, but the accuracy of the wind speed of LDAPS was lower than that of KLAPS. Significant difference was found in case of relative humidity where RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) for LDAPS and KLAPS was 15.7 and 35.6%, respectively. The RMSE for air temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity was improved by approximately $0.3^{\circ}C$, $0.2m\;s^{-1}$, and 2.2%, respectively after incorporating the FDDA.

This study was conducted to investigate the environmental impact of the construction of the Yeongju Dam, located near the upper stream of the Nakdong River, on benthic macroinvertebrates. The investigation was conducted four times from 2015 to 2016 and the composition of the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna from the four surveyed sites was compared. After the dam construction, the number of benthic macroinvertebrate species decreased and the species composition ratio of the E.P.T taxa(Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera) decreased, which favored the previous environment and the large riverbed structure. However, the species composition ratio of the O.C.H taxa (Odonata, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera), which favored the reservoir environment, increased. For the pattern of changes in the functional habitat groups, the proportion of 'Clinger(CL)' taxa decreased and the 'Burrower(BU), Climber(CB), Sprawler(SP), Swimmer(SW)' taxa increased in all surveys after the dam construction. A cluster stability comparison showed that the 'Stability Group II' species of St.2 and St.3 showed a drastic decrease. The average Benthic Macroinvertebrate Index(BMI) of all the survey sites in 2016 was lower than that in 2015. This research confirmed the temporal and spatial changes in the habitat type and community structure of the benthic macroinvertebrates resulting from the dam construction.
