Physicochemical parameters, plankton biomass, and sediment were surveyed from 1998 to 2000 at two months interval in a eutrophic coastal lagoon(Lake Hwajinpo, Korea). The lake is separated from the sea by a narrow sand dune. Littoral zone is well vegetated with leafing-leaved aquatic plants. The lake basin is divided into two subbasins by a shallow sill. It has intrusion of seawater by permeation and stormy waves. Stable chemoclines are formed by salinity difference at 1m depth all the year round. DO was often very low (< 1 mg$O_2\;L^{-1}$) at hypolimnion. Temperature inversions were observed in November. Nitrate and ammonium concentrations were very low(< (1.1 mgN $L^{-1}$), even though TN was usually 2.0 ${\sim}$ 3.5 mgN $L^{-1}$. TN/TP was generally lower than the Redfield ratio. Transparency was 0.2 ${\sim}$ 1.7 m, and COD, TP, and TN of sediment were 3.1 ${\sim}$ 40.3 mg$O_2\;g^{-1}$, 0.91 ${\sim}$ 1.39 mgP $g^{-1}$, and 0.34 ${\sim}$ 3.07 mgN $g^{-1}$, respectively. Phytoplankton chlorophyll- a concentrations were mostly over 40 mg $m^{-3}$. Two basins showed different phytoplankton communities with Oscillatoria so., Trachelomonas sp., Schizochlamys gelatinosa, and Anabaena spiroides dominant in South basin, and with Trachelomons sp., Schroederia so., schizochlamys gelatinosa, and Trachelomonas sp. dominant in the North basin. The seasonal succession of phytoplankton was very fast, possibly due to sudden changes in physical conditions, such as wind, turbidity, salinity and light.
The antimony deposits of the Hyundong mine, located in the northeastern part of the Sobaegsan massif, occur as hydrothermal quartz+carbonate veins and stockworks which fill the fault fractures developed in Precambrian metamOlphic rocks (mainly, granitic gneiss). Hydrothermal alteration occurs commonly in the vicinity of mineralized veins and is characterized by sericitization and silicification. A K-Ar age of alteration sericite is 139.2$\pm$ 4.4 Ma, implying the early Cretaceous age of mineralization, possibly in association with intrusion of nearby acidic dikes (mainly, quartz porphyry). The hydrothermal mineralization occurred in five mineralization stages. These are: (I) stage I, characterized by deposition of chalcedonic quartz; (2) stage II, deposition of quartz with base-metal sulfides and stibnite; (3) stage III, deposition of quartz and carbonates (calcite, dolomite, ankerite, rhodochrosite) with various antimony-bearing minerals such as stibnite, polybasite, berthierite, native antimony, gudmundite and ullmannite; (4) stage IV, deposition of calcite with stibnite; and (5) stage V, deposition of barren calcite. Antimony occurs mostly as stibnite within stages II to IV veins, which has various habits including disseminated, veinlets and euhedral coarse crystals. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that hydrothermal mineralization at Hyundong occurred from the fluids with temperature and salinity of $330^{\circ}$C to 120 and 5.3 wI. % equiv. NaCI. The temperature and salinity of ore fluids systematically decreased with elapsed time in the course of mineralization, possibly due to the influx of larger amounts of meteoric groundwater. The deposition of antimony-bearing minerals occurred at low temperatures «$250^{\circ}$C), mainly due to the cooling and dilution of fluids. Based on the evidence of fluid boiling during the early stage II mineralization, the mineralization occurred under low pressure conditions (about 80 bars, corresponding to depths of about 350 m under hydrostatic pressure regime). Thermodynamic considerations of ore . mineral assemblages indicate that antimony deposition also occurred as the results of decreases in temperature and sulfur fugacity of hydrothermal fluids. Calculated sulfur isotope composition of ore fluids ($\delta^{34}S_{\Sigma s}$=5.4 to 7.8$\textperthousand$) indicates an igneous source of sulfur.

Physical characteristics and nutrient distributions in seawater were investigated to understand the mechanism of red tide outbreak in coastal waters off Kohung area. To identify any physical and chemical differences before, during and after the red tide outbreaks, 6 times of field observations have been carried out from May to October, 1997. We found that major environmental properties of the seawater in the study area were determined not by the local meteoric conditions or nearby-land influences, but by the intrusion of seawater from offshore. In particular, extreme environmental variations in seawater were found during the period of red tide outbreak from August to September. Before the red tide outbreak, high concentrations of DIN(Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen)were found in seawater, but they decreased during the outbreak. Whereas no significant variations of DIP(Dissolved Inorganic Phosphate) were found. For the water mass in the semienclosed northern part of the study area, local nutrient sources originated from nearby-lands were estimated to cover 70% of total DIN input, but the rest part of the water mass in the study area, sporadic intrusion of offshore water mass could account for the major source of DIN supply. An offshore water mass influenced by Yangtze river effluent was suggested as one of the candidates with its high nitrate contents, high seawater temperature and low salinity. A red tide related phytoplankton, Gyrodinium impudicum, was found in seawater on the 21th day of August and, on the same day, a unique water mass with high temperature and extremely low salinity suddenly appeared in the study area. On the 22th day of September, after one and half month duration of red tide we found that red tide had disappeared simultaneously with the intrusion of new water mass with different characteristics.
limiting nutrients for phytoplankton were determined by dissored inorganic nitrogen/phosphorous (DIN/DIP) in situ and algal bioassay experiment in the Seomjin River estuary during a study period from March 1999 to October 2001. DIN/DIP ranged from 14.7 to 681.1 during the study period. DIN/DIP was over 16 at the upper and middle estuarine region where salinity was lower than 25 psu and chlorophyll a concentration was high, probably indicating P-limitation in this region while the ratio was less than 16 at the high saline (> 25 psu) region, reflecting the supply of DIP from Gwangyang Bay and thereby indicating N-limitation at the lower estuarine region. These results suggested that the spatial distribution of DIN/DIP in the study region was controlled by the high supply of phosphate from Gwangyang Bay, the low input from Seomjin River and the active uptake by phytoplankton within the estuarine system. The bioassay experiments using Skeletonema costatum, Thalaasiosira rotula and in situ phytoplankton assemblage displayed relatively higher growth of phytoplankton in the P-added culture media, indicating P-limitation. This result was well consistent with the spatial distribution of inorganic nutrients. S. costatum showed a rapid adaptation to the low salinity compared to other phytoplankton species. This phenomenon seemed to account for the strong (> $90\%$ in total cell number) S. costatum bloom in autumn in this estuary. Moreover, although phytoplankton growth rate was higher in the P-added culture media at the end of culture experiment of in situ phytoplankton, the fast growth in the trace metal-added media at the beginning of the experiment suggested a possibility of limitation by other micro-nutrients such as trace metal and vitamin etc.

Korean Baechu cabbage(known as Chinese cabbage) brined in 0%, 5% and 10% (all w/v) salt solutions were packed using high-density polyethylene film (HDPE-film), low-density polyethylene film (LDPE-film), or Mirafresh film (MF-film, US patent No. 5972815), and stored at 4C for 4 weeks. Changes in pH and salinity, and microorganism counts (lactic acid bacteria and total bacteria), were investigated. There was no significant difference in the pH change in cabbage stored using various films when the vegetables were not salted. However, the pH was most stable in Baechu cabbage prepared using 10% salt solution. Cabbage treated with 0%, 5%, and 10% salt showed salinity values of 0.83%, 1.17% and 1.62%(all w/w), respectively, after 4 weeks of storage by LDPE-film. When cabbage was treated with the highest concentration of salt solution, the count of lactic acid bacteria increased but that of total bacteria decreased. The pH from pH 6.10 to pH 4.32, pH 5.68, and pH 5.92 in brined cabbage packed in HDPE-film, LDPE-film, and MF-film, respectively, after 4 weeks. When MF-film was used, the pH showed the greatest stability of all films tested, regardless of the concentration of salt solution employed in brining. The counts of lactic acid bacteria and total bacteria increased by all tested films during storage. Cabbage packed by MF-film showed the lowest increase in bacterial counts. In conclusion, MF-film was found to be the most effective packaging material for Baechu cabbage and brining in 10% salt solution was optimal to enhance the shelf life of the vegetable. LDPE-film was more effective than was HDPE-film for storage of brined cabbage.

A seasonal characteristic of marine environment and fish assemblages in the coastal waters of Jeju Island were determined using samples collected by a trammel net in from 2012 to 2013. Annual mean temperature and salinity were $18.8^{\circ}C$, 33.7psu (2012) and $18.8^{\circ}C$, 33.8psu (2013) which shows stable water mass. nutrient concentrations represent that dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) ranged from 0.030 to 0.217mg/L, dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) from 0.002 to 0.010mg/L, and silicate ($SiO_2$) from 0.096 to 0.292mg/L. Chlorophyll a concentrations of phytoplankton ranged from 0.905 to $1.125{\mu}g/L$ were appeared the highest in summer and the lowest in winter. Suspended Solid(SS) concentrations ranged from 1.200 to 2.100mg/L (mean, 1.634mg/L) were appeared the highest in autumn and the lowest in spring. During the survey period, a total of 83 species (48 families and 12 orders) of fishes were identified, Perciformes and Scorpaeniformes accounted for 63.9% of the total number. The number of species was higher in summer than in winter, showing a peak in summer at 57 species and a low in winter at 47 species. The number of individuals and the biomass peaked in summer at 694 individuals and 151.9kg, and were the lowest in autumn at 466 individuals and 106.5kg. The diversity index, evenness index and richness index were appeared 2.92~3.14, 0.75~0.83 and 7.06~8.56 at each stations. the dominance index were appeared highest in spring and summer, were appeared the lowest in winter and autumn. The Filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer), Bluestriped angelfish (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis), Marbled rockfish (Sebastiscus marmoratus), Rabbit fish (Siganus fuscescens), Blackfin sweeper (Pempheris japonica) were dominant species, which occurred abundantly during the entire survey period. The subtropical fishes were identified total of 41 species (49.4%) and the number of species was higher in summer at 29 (50.9%) species and a low in winter at 20 (42.6%) species. The dominant species of subtropical fishes were appeared Bluestriped angelfish, Blackfin sweeper, Rabbit fish, Scarbreast tuskfish (Choerodon azurio), Ballonfish (Diodon holocanthus), Flagfish (Goniistius zonatus), Blue-spotted boxfish (Ostracion immaculatus) in study sites. The subtropical fishes of species, individual and biomass showed significant correlation with environmental factors (Chlorophyll a, DIN, DIP, $SiO_2$) in almost all sampling sites.
The principal objective of this fundamental research was to analyze the physicochemical changes and sensory properties of Dolsan leaf mustard pickles (DMP) for the development of low-salt pickles in order to contribute to the diversification of food. The DMPs were stored at −2℃ for 90 days, with salinity maintained at 1.63% to 1.85%. The pH was decreased during storage, and the acidity was gradually increased for up to 60 days of storage, after which it was increased rapidly to 1.10. The L-values (lightness) from the stems were decreased during storage. The a-values (greenness) were increased, while the b-values (yellowness) were decreased. It was shown that the DMP had a progressive browning phenomenon and the number of lactic acid bacteria gradually decreased. The sensory evaluation showed that crunchy textures were decreased and touch textures were increased at 30 days. Therefore, Dolsan leaf mustard is suitable as a material for low-salt pickles during storage for 90 days. The results of the analysis of the physicochemical and sensory properties indicate that the optimal storage for DMP was maintained for up to 30 days.
Background: There have been many studies on the growth conditions of Zostera marina and Zostera japonica, but few studies have examined how spatial and temporal factors affect growth in established seagrass beds or the distribution range and shoot density. This study aims to clarify the factors that determine the temporal and spatial distribution of Zostera marina and Zostera japonica in the Seto Inland Sea east of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Methods: The study site is in Hiroshima Bay of the Seto Inland Sea, along the east coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. We monitored by diving observation to confirm shoot density, presence or absence of both species and observed water temperature, salinity by sensor in study sites. Results: The frequency of occurrence of Zostera marina was high in all seasons, even in water depths of D.L. + 1 to -5 m ($80{\pm}34%$ to $89{\pm}19%$; mean ${\pm}$ standard deviation), but lower (as low as $43{\pm}34%$) near the breakwall, where datum level was 1 to 2 m, and it was further reduced in datum level -5 m and deeper. The frequency of occurrence of Zostera japonica was highest in water with a datum level of +1 to 0 m. However, in datum level of 0 m or deeper, it became lower as the water depth became deeper. Datum level +1 m to 0 m was an optimal water depth for both species. The frequency of occurrence and the shoot density of both species showed no negative correlation. In 2011, the daily mean water temperature was $10^{\circ}C$ or less on more days than in other years and the feeding damage by S. fuscescens in the study sites caused damage at the tips. Conclusions: We considered that the relationship between these species at the optimal water depth was not competitive, but due to differences in spatial distribution, Zostera marina and Zostera japonica do not influence each other due to temperature conditions and feeding damage and other environmental conditions. Zostera japonica required light intensity than Zostera marina, and the water depth played an important role in the distribution of both species.

We surveyed 23 sites of Jinhae Bay in spring and summer 2010 in order to study the correlation between the variation of environmental factors, including salinity, temperature, and nutrients and the characteristics of phytoplankton community structures in summer stratification. Phytoplankton biomass was high in the surface water in summer; however, it was very low in the bottom water. The results showed a negative correlation between chlorophyll a (chl. a) and nutrients (silicate, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and phosphate) or nutrients ratio in summer; however, there was mostly a positive correlation between chl. a and these nutrients in spring. This inconsistent correlation between spring and summer was attributed to the phytoplankton community, because a diverse phytoplankton community has different nutrient uptake abilities. In addition, the results of CCA (canonical correspondence analysis) showed a negative correlation between phosphate and dominant species, including Chaetoceros spp., Skeletonema costatum-like spp., and Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima in summer, but a strong positive correlation between DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) and the dominant species, including Cryptomonas spp. and Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata in spring. Consistently, the dominant algal species in summer showed a relatively smaller size cells compared with those in spring, suggested that it may have related with the low nutrient levels at surface layer due to strong stratified water column of summer.

The vegetation period of trees might be prolonged by the delay of the leaf senescence in autumn. Thus, we focused on the generation of senescence-delayed transgenic trees to enhance biomass production. The PagMYC2, a gene containing the basic helix-loop-helix domain, was selected as a candidate for a senescence-delayed transgenic tree. The PagMYC2 gene was specifically induced after treatment with phytohormone jasmonic acid, and upregulated by abiotic stresses such as salinity, osmotic pressure and a low temperature. The constitutive overexpression of the PagMYC2 delayed the leaf senescence and inhibited chlorophyll degradation in the transgenic poplars. Leaf senescence analysis was performed in the leaf tissues of the PagMYC2-over-expression transgenic poplars. The transgenic poplars exhibited higher photochemical efficiency than did a wild type plant under a short-day condition (6 hours light/18 hours darkness) or a low temperature condition ($15^{\circ}C$) that was similar to the weather conditions of autumn. These results suggest that the PagMYC2 is a useful genetic resource to improve biomass production, which is able to sustain growth with senescence-delayed leaves for a long time in autumn.
