  • Objectives We aimed to identify the effectiveness of photobiomodulation using low level laser therapy (LLLT), light emitting diode (LED) and others on the growth of the length of the growth plate by reviewing literatures. Methods We searched literatures using PubMed, Science Direct, CINAHL, Korea Traditional Knowledge Portal (KTKP), Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS), China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI), Japan Science and Technology Information Aggregator, Electronic (J STAGE), and Japan National Institute of Informatics Scholarly and Academic Information Navigator (CiNii) using the keywords "Growth plate" "Epiphyseal growth" "Epiphyseal plate" and "Laser", "light emitting diode (LED)", "near-infrared light", and "photobiomodulation". Search range included only original article which provided English abstract were selected. The search strategy contained no language limitation. Results A total 556 studies were found. Then, 551 were excluded by scanning titles and abstracts and finally 5 articles were selected. Five articles were RCTs using rodents. Two of the 5 articles used InGaAlP Laser (630-685 nm), and the other 3 articles used GaAlAs Laser (780, 820, and 870 nm) to investigated the effects of LLLT on the growth of the length of the epiphyseal cartilage and the number of chondrocytes and thickness of each zone of the epiphyseal cartilage. Two articles concluded that LLLT had a beneficial effect on the longitudinal growth of the growth plate. In growth of the epiphyseal plate, there were no significant differences in others. Conclusions It is might that LLLT influenced on the growth of epiphyseal plate by positive affect. However, further rigorous RCTs are warranted.

  • Background: Myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPDS) is the most common type of temporomandibular disorder. This study compared the efficacies of low-level diode laser therapy (LLLT) and laser acupuncture therapy (LAT) in the treatment of MPDS. Methods: This double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial included 24 patients with MPDS who were randomly divided into two equally sized groups. Patients in the LLLT group received 12 sessions of low-level diode laser irradiation applied to the trigger points of the masticatory muscles during 1 month. The same protocol was also used in the LAT group according to the specific trigger points. We measured pain intensity and maximum mouth opening in both groups at baseline, during treatment, and 2 months after treatment completion. Results: The pain intensities decreased from 6.58±1.31 to 0.33±0.65 and from 7.08 ± 1.37 to 0 in the LLLT and LAT groups, respectively. The maximum mouth openings increased from 32.25 ± 8.78 mm to 42.58 ± 4.75 mm and from 33 ± 6.57 mm to 45.67 ± 3.86 mm in the LLLT and LAT groups, respectively. Pain intensity (P = 0.839) and level of maximum mouth opening (P = 0.790) did not differ significantly between the groups. Conclusion: Our results showed similar efficacy between LLLT and LAT in the treatment of MPDS signs and symptoms.

  • Currently, lasers are one of the most popular light sources in use for medical treatment. Many studies on low power lasers are being done in cell culture or through animal tests and most report different findings, making it difficult to verify their true effects. There are shifts in trends of studies from laser and LED that are expensive and generate heat problem to LED that are economically effective and safe. Its near infrared rays can penetrate deep into skin or muscle, up to 23 cm, without causing thermal damage or impairing neighboring tissues. This study verified the performance and effectiveness of an LED irradiator that was designed to emit similar wavelengths to that of a laser and thus could be used instead of a low level laser therapy in experiments on animals. And then, each experiment was performed to irradiation group and non-irradiation group for NTacSam:SD tissue cells. MIT assay method was chosen to verify the cell increase of two groups and the effect of irradiation on cell proliferation was examined by measuring 590nm transmittance of ELISA reader. As a result, the cell increase of NTacSam:SD tissue cells was verified in irradiation group as compared to non-irradiation group. The fact that specific wavelength irradiation has an effect on cell vitality and proliferation is known through this study.

  • Burns are one of the most extensive injuries of soft tissues as well as skin, occasionally resulting in extensive, deep wounds and death. Burn wounds can lead to severe physical and psychological distress because of excessive scarring and skin contractures. Treatment of burn wounds has always been a challenging problem and many different methods have been used to treat such injuries. We report here on treating a patient with a burn wound using 830-nm light emitting diode (LED) phototherapy combined with epidermal growth factor (EGF) solution. After five daily sessions of LED with EGF solution treatment, the patient demonstrated nearly complete improvement with no remarkable side effects. We suggest that LED phototherapy combined with EGF solution could be an effective and safe treatment option for treating burn wounds.

  • This paper performed the basic study for developing the Photodynamic Therapy Equipment for medical treatment. We developed the equipment palpating cell proliferation using a high brightness LED. This equipment was fabricated using a micro-controller and a high brightness LED, and designed to enable us to control light irradiation time, intensity, frequency and so on. Especially, to control the light irradiation frequency, FPGA was used, and to control the change of output value, TLC5941 was used. Control stage is divided into 30 levels by program. Consequently, the current value could be controlled by the change of level in Continue Wave(CW) and Pulse Width Modulation(PWM), and the output of a high brightness LED could be controlled stage by stage. And then, each experiment was performed to irradiation group and non-irradiation group for both Rat bone marrow and Rat tissue cells. MTT assay method was chosen to verify the cell increase of two groups and the effect of irradiation on cell proliferation was examined by measuring 590 nm transmittance of ELISA reader. As a result, the cell increase of Rat bone marrow and tissue cells was verified in irradiation group as compared to non-irradiation group. • Purpose : Our study aimed to compare the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and light-emitting diode therapy (LEDT) for chronic pain intensity reduction and body temperature increase in older adults with chronic pain. Methods : Overall, 144 of 332 participants' records were used in this retrospective chart review. The study was conducted at a private health center in Busan city and the integrative medical center of a tertiary care hospital in Daegu city, South Korea. Patients experiencing chronic pain for over 6 months were assigned to either the LLLT or LEDT group. Both groups underwent 16 sessions of phototherapy held twice a week for 8 weeks, with each session lasting 60 minutes. The primary outcomes for both groups were the mean visual analogue scale (VAS) scores and body temperatures in both groups. The secondary outcome was the correlation between changes in body temperature and pain intensity. Measurements were recorded at the baseline and at each follow-up session. Results : A decrease in pain intensity and an increase in body temperature (p<.001) were observed in both groups. There was a significant difference in the VAS scores and temperature changes between the groups (p<.001). Odditionally, there were significant differences in the patterns of change in the VAS score and body temperature between the groups as the sessions progressed (p<.01), and a strong inverse correlation between body temperature and pain intensity changes were observed (p<.01). Conclusion : The use of photobiomodulation therapy at a specific wavelength may improve pain severity and simultaneously increase the body temperature among elderly people with chronic pain.
